I had one of these i bought it in 1988 a 1979 2.8 ghia in oyster gold with brown vinyl roof, i was working as a car refinisher then so i totally restored it inside and out , looked like new.had that car for 8 years very reliable too, i loved that motor only let it go after i changed job for a sales job so not very economical but regret it now a silly thing to do .and yes best ford ever made

Luckily mine was built in Germany and was really well put together, no loose panels coming loose and other trim coming apart just a solid motor . Shame the British models suffered with problems mainly down to bolshy shop stewards always calling strike action in the 70's so quality suffered and i know this as worked at a Ford dealership then so saw first hand how the british models were built...pity as we always knew how to build great cars

Used to work as Ford Mechanic and these motors are just the best, ok the weak points in my opinion are the door trims, at least on the series 2, they fall apart, but what can you expect I suppose nothings perfect. The thing I liked about these was the actual build quality of the frame, they rarely had bad rust, the main points for rust are back drain holes, tip of bonnet, back of inner sills - easy to fix there's a guy sells pattern panels, and the wings rot as well.
Compared to the MK3 they are just much better and not just from a nostalgic point of view, they are a bit heavier on fuel but much more rust resistant, more solid chassis and much better to look at. The MK3 was a total rust trap, the arches would turn to dust in a few years as well as the bottoms of doors, sills etc. and that big hatchback shape was like a wobbly jelly regarding stiffness and it looked crap.
The only Mk3 I might consider would be a scorpio saloon but they are very rare.

Today, me and my dad pulled home a exact same Granada but with a 2.0L engine, it had been locked up in a barn for 20 years. It is in terrible condition but I am going to fix it one day.

Thanks for a brilliant post of a fantastic car. Brought back memories of my 79 Ghia which I bought second hand and had for @ 8 years. I then had an 84 estate Ghia. Ok I suppose but the quality of the internal fittings had gone right down and the auxiliary warning system and leccy windows very troublesome. The difference between being first worm driven changed to cable being VERY apparent.

I spotted the rust bubble too. That said, it's still a nice basis for full restoration. The seats are slightly more saggy than I'd expect to see given the mileage. Still a bit of an eye catcher though. I always liked the brown vinyl roof. It seemed just a bit nicer than the black option. Back in the day there was a healthy waiting list for a new Grandad.

I bought a '79 2.8 Ghia (FPU 606T) that looked exactly like this one both outside and in (although mine had factory air con) as my first car at 18 yrs old (in 1984). I then got a 2.8 Injection (VRK 282X - red with pearlescent white TRX alloys and grey Recaro seats). Always loved the look of the Mk2 / Mk2 facelift Granadas...

The one I owned was the 2.8 Ghia in white but with the light blue interior. It seemed so limousine like and posh I suppose. Engine seemed so smooth as I remember (kind of). Probably thirsty too, hence the move to a Metro.. ha..ha..

Good for it's age but I wasn't very keen on it, I had the Granada 3 litre Ghia. It was a lovely metallic green paintwork and black vinyl roof with tilt and slide sunroof. I got it brand new and was £4,500.00p. In it's day it was a beautiful car. Like a mug and against advice from friends, I traded it in for a Cadilac Eldorado 8.2 litre engine, LHD. I still have nightmares searching for that car but i never find it. Although i always buy a new car now, none can hold a candle to the Granada. It was quite a big car but it held the road, even cornering at fairly high speed. How I would love to find one that's been in storage since late 70's and is in mint condition, I would never be able to afford such a car, but would love to see one, nostalgia.
