Its good to see someone actually play the instrument and show us, it annoys me when someone fixes a keyboard or something and refuses to play, even briefly and make lame excuses. I didn't know it was permissible to list your patrons from Fran Lab on another channel, nobody else does that.
never ceases to amaze me, how some people think they know how to "customize" the circuit & make it "better" than how the original engineer designed it & invariably end up turning a perfectly good device into e-waste
Inspirational. As an educator this channel and this video demonstrates that following your passion pays off eventually. A great testament to customer service and generally being a "nice" person. Inspired
BTW Fran, l really dig your white nylon strain relief (for lack of a better term) on your battery wires. Nice little touch. You can always tell when an actual user of a device is the designer of said item. Love hearing your muttering under your breath too. You sound just like me!
I have always been amazed how IC's with the same part number can act so different. I remember looking at a simple op amp circuit from different manufactures where the bias resistors on chip were different values in all three that were being tested in circuit. Two would fail the resistance test even though the board would work. And in other applications I had to find ICs from a certain manufacturer or the circuit would not work or would not work very long before failure. All same part number. Check out the MIL cross ref sheets from military gear. You could have 30 different numbers for the same part. Hard to believe they would all work the same.
Whoever attempted to repair this initially obviously didn't understand and appreciate the thoughtfulness and care behind your design and build. Such a high quality product 👌
I noticed on a few of your videos fran you say you dislike the desoldering gun because it takes long to heat up. If you were to sell your current one and upgrade to a hakko fr-301, you would notice a massive difference in every way. It's my favorite tool to use, I fire it up every chance I get. The quality, factory support, heating is quick just a few seconds and Bob's your uncle!
There are three kind of people. Those, who know, what they are doing and those, who don't know. But the most dangerous ones, are those, who think, that they know...
I'm impressed you didn't close it back up and return it un-fixed to the sender when you saw the way it had been modified. I aspire to be as thorough and diligent as you, Fran.
: / I'm the owner. My tech guy did that *sigh* I'm extremely glad Fran did the honorable thing and fixed it. I'm guilty of plugging in the wrong power supply but that was all
#13:30. Those sockets are for wire wrap circuits. They are not intended for IC chips. Some idiot on the internet a decade ago said these sockets are better, and they are absolutely not intended to be compatible.
That's some of the best-sounding distortion I've heard, even if it's not "up to spec." Here's hoping you're eventually able to get an OEM to take up your manufacturing standard and re-issue your pedals.
I like a socket driver to get pot and button nuts off. The shaft goes right through and the 12-point drive ensures the nut never gets scratched or burred.
What that mess deposited on the lid at5:57. Maybe an explosion of parts at the power jack from some event with the dc in power. May have torch the ic's and some other parts. These type of witness marks may tell some of the story. Great vid's NØPXJ
Cat hair? Oh my, we've got tons of that stuff down here :D Its loveliness increases. It will never pass into nothingness... What were they even thinking, replacing those chips? I'd replace them one by one to see which one was the culprit, then maybe do some tests on it... Let's do some science here. Oh, and nice to hear that you used teflon insulated wires and conformal coating. Nice stuff :) Interesting thing about muting too. "Jellybean is not my lover..."
LM386-N is what I run in the pedals i build also. You can push 18V through if you want. I typically go from 12V to 15V. It really makes those 386's scream.
Well done on both the OG build and repair. If you want a repair done right, have the person that built it do it, I'm ashamed to admit I've never heard of Frantone or Peachfuzz, but I do love op amp fuzzes/Muffs as this reminds me a good deal of my op amp muff.
Neat. I just repaired my old DOD fx90 delay pedal. I had to replace every single jumper wire. They all completely degraded, input/output, switch, LED. Weird.
Skip Simmons says the first thing he does before any trouble shooting is clean an amp. I've taken that advice for electronics. He said customers ask him what was wrong with their amp, and 80-90% of the time just cleaning it solves the problem, so he has no other answer for them.
@@FrantoneElectronics now I remember - one big gripe was having a paint room - maybe power coat and screen print instead? Bottom line: "the quality goes in before the name goes on" and I appreciate that!!
I think I hear a flanger. Maybe just you moving between the speaker and the mic? That pedal sounds really nice. With all the trouble and thought you put into it, I'm not surprised.
If sockets are part of the original design, and quality sockets are used, then fine. For analog, at least. Digital has lots more leeway, but it's not universal either. I've often had to use contact whetting formulas when switching ICs in older sockets. Because replacing sockets often sucks, doubly so for high-quality sockets with stronger and heavier pins, which I view as being part of the PCB itself. In desperate situations I have been known to solder a chip into its socket, generally only as a last-ditch attempt to avoid long-term decommissioning of equipment (and the associated system) when complete removal for overhaul is the next option and spares aren't available.
Mee too! I've gotten where l just turn down a lot of previously "repaired" gear and "swapped out" pieces. Normally l just give it back. If they get an attitude l hit em with a bench fee.
Ah jeez, what did these MORONS do to my design!!! So funny, this attitude extends far beyond pedal building. Almost sounds like Psht from Ed Bassmaster. :) Also, nothing wrong with socketing IC’s, very, very standard practice. Great job on getting it up and running again!
Dont ya just love it when people bastardize your work! In addition to live production, instrument and equipment repairs l also build my own custom cabling. Stage power gang boxes, snakes, instrument/mic and speaker cabling. When l first started doing so, l gave out several units to local and regional musicians. This was to not only get feedback from the field, but also to spread awareness of my products around the working musician community. My designs are damn near bulletproof. With proper care they could last decades. Maybe even a lifetime. Certain colored flex covers, certain plug and device cover types and colors are all specifically chosen so that at a glance, one can see and know what it is and it's particular purpose, ratings and capabilities are. My designs are distinctive. They're not cheap to produce. Or purchasee for that matter. They're high end. Geared towards working musicians. My only caveat was that they don't dick around with them. Give me feedback on their performance. If their was ever any issues, bring em to me so l could investigate. And most of all, whenever someone took notice, give em my contact info so l could build a customer base. Sounds reasonable... I recently ran FOH for a band whose guitarist was one of the first people l ever did this for. I was surprised to see he wasn't using my cables. Upon closer examination, he was. He'd just SPRAY PAINTED ALL MY SHIT! I was furious! I didn't say anything at the time. My rule #1 is NEVER WRECK THE SHOW. But ad soon as they said "Thank you. Good night". I went straight onstage and started repoing all my cables. Two pedalboards worth of shorty patchcords, two pilot light switched 10/2 4 gang box AC cords w 30amp industrial plugs and recepticals, instrument and speaker cables. Were talking $500-$600 worth of cables! Dude was pissed. But SO WAS I! He broke the deal.
This is a channel I’ve been looking for… for years! Where did you learn to repair pedals?
She designed and built them in the first place ;)
Lol. I believe it 😂
Holy shit you weren’t kidding!!! Just looked her up on google 😂 I feel like a dumbass but I’m playing the “I’m the new guy” card 😂
@@snarkybu42 Yup, she be the "Fran" in Frantone ;)
Love the 'patina' 🤭
Hearing the disgust in your voice when you found the sockets and N-4s, that is the sound of someone who takes pride in their work and designs.

I didn't know it was permissible to list your patrons from Fran Lab on another channel, nobody else does that.
I watch these repair videos mostly just to get a chance to hear you play a little, Fran!
Same here. To embark on such a business she had to be in love with the tone.
Thanks Fran x
I C smart. 12/2023 viewed. wow. you are a treasure. made me smile. !!!!!!!!!
19 mins in and forgot about the video and just watching Fran jam. Thank you.
Props for the solid 9v connector instead of the floppy junk.
never ceases to amaze me, how some people think they know how to "customize" the circuit & make it "better" than how the original engineer designed it & invariably end up turning a perfectly good device into e-waste
It's the effect pedal version of the "repairs done by another shop" you see on the Just Rolled In videos.
Every reaction I've ever seen from an electrical to seeing what someone else has done to their baby... It's cathartic haha
Solid video Fran
The strategically placed Bop-It is important for testing.
Trade secret...
I wonder if casual Fran lab viewers have any idea how freaking cool you are

What a huge difference in tone -- massively better now.

I LOVE these repairs! Unbelievably generous to personally restore such an abused affront to the Frantone name.
Generous? I *hope* that Fran is charging them *A* *LOT*
I like how you still remember how something you built in 2004 was designed and how it's supposed to work.
I have always been amazed how IC's with the same part number can act so different. It was great to hear you play.
I finally got a 2nd hand Peach Fuzz. Now I know what's inside. It works great.
My favorite fuzz pedal!
Ha, they're never turning to that person again for pedal repairs after seeing this video I'm sure!

Someone was messin' with Fran's art! You got it back and that pedal looks well used. It's ready for more.
Excellent video.
Where the heck have I been? This is a great space! I'm glad I found this channel :)

Very impressive! 👍👍
Ha! Teflon insulation will cold flow unlike PVC so under pressure it will slowly displace until it shorts so that could have been a factor.
When Fran starts swearing you know it's bad
Always get numbers matching parts when possible. Basic rule of electronics repair.
Also don't get your ICs off of eBay/Amazon/AliExpress
I love this video! So happy you made a page just for the pedals! Thank you FRAN))))
If you have an AMA, one of the top questions will probably be "How do you feel about sockets?".

I like plastic sockets so it never scratches anything

In the world of 8biit computers, sockets are the considerate thing to do. In the world of high gain analog audio circuits it's the opposite :)
What the Flux! 🤔😅👍👍👍👍
Haha, stoopid fluxxors!
Wish I could order a new one of these from you 😞
Why the hate for sockets? They are generally the way to go when using IC's.
Nice!
you don't j hook the wires before you solder ?
What’s the proper way to clean flux after soldering? Thanks in advance
Innocent noob: “where did you learn to repair FranTone pedals?” Fran: Hold my beer…..😂 love this channel❤
Hi Fran, musician's modifications!!, you know that sometimes they like to change the sound !!, don't know much about electronics!!, lol 😆
No, all I did was plug in the wrong power supply. But I sent it to a tech for the repair.
Oh, I wish I could buy a new one from you. They’re mega bucks now.
So I'm kinda curious if you go to a show, can you hear when folks use "your" effects or not. Neat
Could you provide the details of your crowbar? Cheers
BTW the crust should add to increased paranoia for stoners
Everyone knows that you can't replace an N-1 with an N-4.. And what about the 5088? Geez... Lol... Just joking... Great video Fran. Subbed you....
Have you considered a re-issue of any of your most popular pedals to fund FranLab?
Yes... ruclips.net/video/NzW_fWCK4E4/видео.html

That pedal sounds really nice. With all the trouble and thought you put into it, I'm not surprised.
That's the consequence of my body refracting the sound waves and morphing phase as I move in front of the amp - much like a Leslie cabinet do.
Why do you put battery on your frantone if you already have power supply?

Why not desolder the sockets then? Or not worth the time?
Probably not worth the time, given the flux-and-conformal-coating mess from the previous "repair."
Thank you Fran. Not to impose but I hope I am not the only one that reccomends Watching Last of Us. on HBO.
Fran, I want a Fran tone, Wawa pedal please please please please can you make me one?.
PS I love you frannha ha ha.
Loved this video. Must be painful to see someone screw up your baby
I'm surprised you left the sockets since you have so much disdain for them.
❤❤❤
Do you offer repair services for these or was this just a one off?
Owner here, I begged, pleaded.. plus I'm a genuine fan of the product.. Very happy she took this challenge on. Honorable..
I laughed, I cringed, I learnt something. I hope the owner met the expense of reanimation.
The noise (fan noise) while you're soldering is painful listening through Bluetooth hearing aids. Never noticed it before.
seems to happen on a lot of channels. she gotta have the fume extractor running when burning lead tho
For a moment I thought it was some test noise generator she was using through the repair! 😂
