i feel like this was a tribute to the scouts 96 show. i was thankful they made the fleur with their drill! i marched madison scouts in 2005 and we had our own brief tribute to that 96 rumbler at the end of our Mambo Caliente number.
i totally can't wait to march and play this song this next year. i've got half of it already memorized and i think it's almost the same arrangement as the music we have. it's great! (:
Just an outside opinion here form someone who marched in the Troy U "Sound of the South". Michigan's band beats the hell out of Ohio's. You guys sound great!
I'm still sticking to my favorite arrangement of Malaguena - the Poway High School Emerald Brigade's version from their 1982-1983 season. It completely rocked, and they took home a TON of trophies that year.
my highschool band is playing this for the show this year. Pluss It Had better be tonight and Spain. Looking up "It Had Better Be Tonight Marching Band" Me and 2 other first trumpets are playing that high D with the lip trill. All three of us are juniors not a single senior can play it....
Michigan does do a pretty good job with this song. Its a tough piece, not easily played. Props to them. It doesn't send the shivers down my spine like say the 1996 Madison Scouts show. If you haven't seen it, I'd highly recommend it. Anyways, great job Michigan, keep it up.
people chill they did an amazing and they have been around longer than DCI this is the first marching bnad America has ever seen. this school started it all. even showstyle bands have originated from this group
@samrshelley Ohio State played 4 home games in a row. 4 different shows. Also Ohio State plays performances during away games. The away game is the first time they play the show, then they repeat that show for the home game. So even in the instances of away games, they still play a new show 1 week after performing their last show (unless there's a bye week)
man this is good and i myself cant wait to play this with my band at a show or somethin now that iv heard how cool it sounds.^_^ but i have to practice it first.
All these comments about who does it best crack me up. Madison Scouts 63',65',78',80',81',88' (DCI CHAMPS),96', as well as the Alumni Corps in 06' did it the best.
I forgot to write that my favorite version of Malaguena is by the '81 Scouts. Also, I agree that it isn't high enough. The soloists were adequate, but not so fun. I suspect this was due to the tradition of Michigan being relatively conservative in their approach. Loud? Yes. Flashy? Not so much.
Corp style is a COPOUT...for students who do not know how to march...students who do not have the disapline to do a correct high step, which is crisp, masterful and tough!
Yes, the responses to my comments...that corp style marching is a "lesser" marching is absolutely telling. Youth today take the easier path, they don't know how to "perfect" something. The "easier" corp style marching is proof. Less to think about, less exertion, less effort, less mastery. POWER comes not ONLY from the music, but the presentation. It was a copout when it was accepted as a standard. Easier to teach, easier to perform. But MUCH less effective and affective!
Florida A&M plays a slightly different of version of this. Their version is more suited for a marching band on a field. This sounds like the original concert band version. Look at the link for FAMU's version.
yeah and i marched in a band of 16 at state in div. 3 getting a high excellent and when i went to academies camp in december most of the trumpet section asked me to come back because they wanted to march with me, so suck it.
The fleur de lis in the beginning is a nice nod to the Scouts, but I'd bet only 10 of the 90,000 people in the stadium got the reference haha. Still, MMB always puts on a good show. I hope we play Malaguena during halftime with the Blue Band before I graduate.
Nice show for sure. But if you want to see the best college band, you need to check out Jacksonville State from Alabama. I saw them do Malaguena at a competition when I was in high school back in 1989...stunning. Only the Scouts themselves have done it better from the shows I have seen.
It looks like they were using matched earlier in the song, but when it shows the snareline at about 2:35, it looks like they've switched to traditional grip. Not sure what's up with the matched grip. MMB usually plays trad.
@xxxDeath9572xxx Well, since light travels faster than sound, that's usually what you see watching a marching band...unless you are really really close to them.
Okay, dude, I said this above, but I'm in the U of M band, and we learn a new show for EVERY GAME. That's a new show EVERY WEEK and we spend that much time to sound this good...drill comes secondary and we can't make it complicated because we want it to be CLEAN. I don't mean offense, and my high school did more radical stuff than seen here too, but don't rag if you don't know.
Yeah, you're definitely right, about what you said and that saxs can sometimes outplay brass, especially tenor sax. That thing is loud. There are things that brass players will never do that woodwinds can, so there's nothing to brag about on either side. We should all just enjoy improving at whatever instrument we like. Brass instruments are loud, that's great but volume isn't everything.
2003 Cadets never really played Malaguena, they played bits and pieces of it with drum breaks inbetween. The Blast version is more like what Stan Kenton and his orchestra played.
I agree with the guy that said it's malaguena...PLAY IT!!! Where are the screaming trumpets? I also agree with the guy that said 81 scouts...though 96 was good too...and 2003 Cadets was just clean as ballz...
Werd. The majority of the Michigan colleges don't have hard drill because their sounds can send chills down your spine... lol, i remember the year when Western Michigan's marching band blew the fucking UofM crowd away at the Big House. Those motherfuckers were freakin out!
Drumline charts are always easier... it's much more important for the drumline to keep PERFECT rhythm.. after all, they are rhythm section! But I've always kept the drumline central to charts to make sure they focus more on playing in sync than elaborate marching patterns.
As someone who has marched college band for 4 years, I have to disagree with that. Just cause we don't compete, doesn't mean we don't take pride in our performance and visual execution of the show. If they're not in step, that is a trait of MICHIGAN, not all college bands.
@ikarooz You are right, it is slightly unfair. But then again, DCI doesn't get near the exposure college bands do, even though they are far and away more talented groups. But hey, thats the way it is. I like all of it too! Go Cats!
@John Connor " It was a Fleur De Lis which is the symbol of the Madison Scouts." . . . . . . did they have someone from the Scouts do this arrangement, or was it borrowed etc. It has a lot of similarities as the '96 version.
If only our marching band would play this piece... Then maybe our football team wouldn't suck as much. Not saying that our band sucks, it doesn't, but it would still be awesome.
@coqui1337 Ok... I don't see your point. I'm in the Kansas State Marching Band, and we opened the season with four straight performances (aka games) too, and each was was different, none were the same. So far we've played at every game (5).
I'm sorry. I just reminded myself as to why I never watch college marching bands. I know they must have some great trumpet players, probably a few that could blow me away, but not those 3 guys. John - former lead soprano SCV and Blue Devils
Being an ex-Scout, this arrangement just isn't high enough... and being a trumpet player, the section seen here needs to cowboy up a little bit... I mean, there must be at least 35 to 50 trumpets... you can't even HEAR them! On the upswing, the low bras is on FIRE! Keep it up!
looks like they were pretty tight (steps apart) they must have gone to match to keep the left arm from sticking on too much so they could be closer for that formation.
As far as college marching bands go, almost all of them seriously lack visual effect even with highstep. But I dare say that there is plenty of power in presentation in a corp show without highstep. There are times for highstep, don't get me wrong it can be effective in the right place. I have seen older shows where they highstep the whole time and it is more of a distraction than visual effect.
I notice they form a fleur de lis in the beginning. A nod to DCI's Madison Scouts perhaps for whom Malaguena is a signature song?
there is some of the finest instructors there and i haven't herd a band that can match them in sound yet!
Our band was 275 and we had 5 drum majors. Me being the head drum major, I was on the field with the band while the other four were on podiums.
My favorite college's marching band + the first song in the show that I'm playing this year = TOTALLY AWESOME
and i shed a smiling tear of grace and fulfillment ....yes
Fort White High School played this song a few years back, it was a lot of fun.
i feel like this was a tribute to the scouts 96 show. i was thankful they made the fleur with their drill! i marched madison scouts in 2005 and we had our own brief tribute to that 96 rumbler at the end of our Mambo Caliente number.
This song is so much fun to preform for Marching band!
wow..very very nice..
one of my fav marching pieces...
love it!!
This is one of the hardest songs to play and I had someone play it on a grand piano.
Its an amazingly wonderfully whimsical song
It’s not that hard
our schools marching band did this show too, part1,2,3 it was beast(:
i totally can't wait to march and play this song this next year.
i've got half of it already memorized and i think it's almost the same arrangement as the music we have.
it's great!
(:
We are playing this for marching band this summer and I'm so excited!!
awesome video, always great to watch the MMB
We did this when I was in high school fo rmy senior year. I remember I was the on field Drum Major, marching and directing.
Just an outside opinion here form someone who marched in the Troy U "Sound of the South". Michigan's band beats the hell out of Ohio's. You guys sound great!

Wow, great job! I'm from Málaga, Spain, and this is a song from my city. I felt goseboomps as an himn. Thxs guys and sorry my bad english >___
@samrshelley How many DIFFERENT shows does any corps band play a year? These fine musicians learn and MEMORIZE a new halftime show WEEKLY.
13 years ago, crazy to think about
the '88 madison scouts show is the best for this song...so amazing. michigan played it very well also
Michigan does do a pretty good job with this song. Its a tough piece, not easily played. Props to them. It doesn't send the shivers down my spine like say the 1996 Madison Scouts show. If you haven't seen it, I'd highly recommend it. Anyways, great job Michigan, keep it up.
whoever put this up...thanks.
people chill they did an amazing and they have been around longer than DCI this is the first marching bnad America has ever seen. this school started it all. even showstyle bands have originated from this group
Were playing this along with a version of New World Symphony for my marching band this year!
My School did Malaguena as their marching show my 8th grade year. all the kids thought it was the best show. I am now a Junior
GO BLUE always and forever!
I was at the game and my college room mate was in the band!
@samrshelley Ohio State played 4 home games in a row. 4 different shows. Also Ohio State plays performances during away games. man this is good and i myself cant wait to play this with my band at a show or somethin now that iv heard how cool it sounds.^_^ but i have to practice it first.
@mashdoctor It was a Fleur De Lis which is the symbol of the Madison Scouts.
I remember playing this in high school for marching band! wow
I enjoyed every minute, thank you for posting,Regards GoGoshKa!
very cool my high school did Malagueña last year The colorguard rules!! And I think we've been to the rose bowl...sooo...very cool though.
All these comments about who does it best crack me up.
Madison Scouts 63',65',78',80',81',88' (DCI CHAMPS),96', as well as the Alumni Corps in 06' did it the best.
They DID that!!!! #Respect!
No one does this better than the one and only MADISON SCOUTS or maybe the MARCHING ILLINI!
Go Michigan! Here's some videos for you. Hope you enjoy them.
yeah and i marched in a band of 16 at state in div. 3 getting a high excellent and when i went to academies camp in december most of the trumpet section asked me to come back because they wanted to march with me, so suck it.
I remember this game like it was yesterday. Go Blue!
The fleur de lis in the beginning is a nice nod to the Scouts, but I'd bet only 10 of the 90,000 people in the stadium got the reference haha.
Still, MMB always puts on a good show. I hope we play Malaguena during halftime with the Blue Band before I graduate.
Nice homage to the Madison Scouts with the Fleur de Lis marching set.
Nice show for sure. But if you want to see the best college band, you need to check out Jacksonville State from Alabama. I saw them do Malaguena at a competition when I was in high school back in 1989...stunning. Only the Scouts themselves have done it better from the shows I have seen.
Lol. I played sax freshman year in highschool, now i'm on trombone :D
Mine too! We're the Yoakum Bulldogs!!!!!! Tuba/Baritone :D
what a big band lol. nva seen bands this big b4
the starting formation as awesome
It looks like they were using matched earlier in the song, but when it shows the snareline at about 2:35, it looks like they've switched to traditional grip.
Not sure what's up with the matched grip. MMB usually plays trad.
Not a big fan of Big Ten marching bands, but the Madison fleur-de-lis is sweet! LOVE Malaguena!
i just got the music piece and this is almost like an altered piece to stand out that its Michigans piece
@xxxDeath9572xxx Well, since light travels faster than sound, that's usually what you see watching a marching band...unless you are really really close to them.
@DCIPhan11 It was just a response to pages and pages of comments about who plays it better.
Look at Allen's marching band. 600+ members and colorguard!
Muuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuito bom, quem dera Taciba fosse assim..
just got this piece for marching band
I agree with the guy that said it's malaguena...PLAY IT!!! Where are the screaming trumpets? I also agree with the guy that said 81 scouts...though 96 was good too...and 2003 Cadets was just clean as ballz...
@samrshelley UNL (University of Nebraska in Lincoln) learns new shows weekly, they tour with the football team :P
Werd. The majority of the Michigan colleges don't have hard drill because their sounds can send chills down your spine...
lol, i remember the year when Western Michigan's marching band blew the fucking UofM crowd away at the Big House. Those motherfuckers were freakin out!
Best Band in the land!
@dangerbycory agreed. I was a shade let down by those snares playing a matched grip
Drumline charts are always easier... it's much more important for the drumline to keep PERFECT rhythm.. after all, they are rhythm section! But I've always kept the drumline central to charts to make sure they focus more on playing in sync than elaborate marching patterns.
amazing

Awesome!
I agree. It's all about the music.
such a big band...
Ok, I can't get the link but type in FAMU malaguena and click the first one you see.
@trumpetmasta69 There is no way the band travels down to Texas and Oklahoma. Not even TAMU does that, and TAMU goes about everywhere.
my HS jazz band played this... but HOLY SHIZ!
our school did malaguena too! But, this sounds a bit better than ours.
people really need to stop trying to compare high scholl and college bands to Drum Corps, the IS NO comparison!!!!!
I wanna see YOU learn a new show EVERY WEEK FOR 10 WEEKS and try to have fancy drill!
that was the best maleguena ever performed.
@ikarooz You are right, it is slightly unfair. But then again, DCI doesn't get near the exposure college bands do, even though they are far and away more talented groups. But hey, thats the way it is. I like all of it too!
Go Cats!
O-H-I-O!! We've got The Best Damn Band In The Land!! Michigan is #88 compared to OSU!!
Wow...low brass at the end, hell yeah trombones.
@John Connor " It was a Fleur De Lis which is the symbol of the Madison Scouts." . . . . . . did they have someone from the Scouts do this arrangement, or was it borrowed etc. It has a lot of similarities as the '96 version.
Their Asst Music Dir.,Scott Boerma ,marched scouts and is has been ,and is returning as Head Music aranger!!!..
maybe this will help the scouts in placement. I know wishful thinking. .. . . I must say, I have enjoyed his stuff for concert band !
He's written before this, but I hear you. Lots of great changes across the board for us including bringing our cymbal line back.!!!!!!
I saw that on youtube somewhere but i forgot what its under...sorry
Great!
The Fleur de Lis is the best symbol of all time, so I'm not complaining...
I certainly don't want anyone to think that I'm trying tho bash these guys. I think it's awesome... Just noticing.
If only our marching band would play this piece...
Then maybe our football team wouldn't suck as much.
Not saying that our band sucks, it doesn't, but it would still be awesome.

Oh wow, the high school I go to performed this song last year. But this is better and faster. But we did win State.
I'm sorry. I just reminded myself as to why I never watch college marching bands. I know they must have some great trumpet players, probably a few that could blow me away, but not those 3 guys.
John - former lead soprano SCV and Blue Devils
Yes Yes we are
If you think they did good, you might want to check out the Madison Scouts' 1995 or 96 show. Which is what these guys are trying to copy.
hmm i might have to say the 2003 Cadet version was has something on it.
Being an ex-Scout, this arrangement just isn't high enough... and being a trumpet player, the section seen here needs to cowboy up a little bit... I mean, there must be at least 35 to 50 trumpets... you can't even HEAR them! On the upswing, the low bras is on FIRE! Keep it up!

matched grip snares? seriously....???
sounded good though...
looks like they were pretty tight (steps apart) they must have gone to match to keep the left arm from sticking on too much so they could be closer for that formation.

search stan kenton malaguena if you want some good players stan was an amazing conductor
