Masha speaks well and carefully explains the dilemma Russia and its people faced after 1991. The sense of humiliation is well stated. Lipman helps us understand why Putin behaves as he does without endorsing it. Good interview and excellent job by Masha Lipman.

The eloquence of disappointment and genuine victimology of circumstances beyond their control coming from a person with insight is a gift for all who will take the time to listen. All of the basic pleasures of life are cherished to a degree we seldom don't appreciate here in the West. Her animated face has the look of resignation interrupted by beaming smiles of wise insights. As a citizen of a smaller country from Eastern Europe I hope I will be excused for not feeling much sympathy for Russia.

This particular interview I think explains Putin’s perspective in a way that I at least can understand. This is akin to the Masha Gessen interview and the Mikhail Zygar interview in terms of making Putin’s perspectives seem maybe less enigmatic.

There is major Russian public support for Putin but still be aware that not showing public support comes at a very serious cost. A cost that we in the USA can’t understand.

The same has been said of Hitlers Germany...but i think thats a fallacy, the Versailles treaty already had done its job at the point WWI was over and Germany in that time always thought in terms of expansion and swift agressive (underdog) victories in terms of geopolitics. The situation of Russia is really quite different even during the cold war Russia mostly feared US agression and rarely thought of itself as an initiator of hostilities....

Russia's the only country, or one of the few, that I can think of where an annointed head of state can be "re-elected." The Russian people have to pur up with that, and with him, and with corruption that infects the whole governmental system - as well as their economy.

The mindset I hear her describing is one where post-Soviet Russia has not done what postwar Germany did: fully accept the consequences of its actions. Why, for example, should the Russian state feel slighted that the West didn't check with it before intervening in Yugoslavia? Yugoslavia was Slavic, but it wasn't Russia. It had not been Russia, previously. The Russian state had brutally subjugated it for several decades, and then collapsed. Nothing in that entitled it to any say on what happened in post-Soviet Yugoslavia. I can understand it had concerns about possible domestic consequences for Russia (an influx of refugees, for example), but it could have no logical _expectation_ of being asked its permission. The same goes for the countries that joined NATO. They weren't in Russia's "sphere of influence." The Russian state had simply subjugated them for several decades, for which it should expect to have zero input concerning their post-Soviet security alliances. None of these things are slights. They are direct consquences of the Russian state's own decades of brutality to these countries. At some point, the Russian polity has to fully internalize that, just as the German polity had to do. Until that happens, I don't see how Russia's long conflict with the rest of the world can ever end (except in some act of nuclear stupidity).

This lady is doing a good job representing an average politically uninvolved citizen in Russia: absorbing and repeating official position of Russian government on almost all situations.
For example, she quotes statistics on Putin ratings (over 60% during Medvedev's term) without a mention that with Putin's vertical of power, all institutions, including statistics and polling, are controlled by Putin. But when I asked how could people trust Putin, they reply "oh well, everyone lies, not just him" and go on with their lives.
Very interesting indeed, but nonetheless not surprising, because, it's the same situation in the US, Canada and England etc., where everyone is just happy, as long as they can put food on the table and have a roof above their head. No matter you start invading countries illegally, like Iraq etc.

Thus I wrote a letter to Russia {worked on it for week or two} and drove from Ohukune to Wellington to deliver the letter directly - as instinct didnt trust my government {I had the vibe that the spies would have intercepted it and thought it a joke}. Not long after that letter then Putin was in power 2000. Advise in the letter was to get tax system up & running, treat yr military well - so they want to defend their nation vigeously {as the solders were being beaten 4 no reason - thus were not going to fight for their nation like they loved it & would defend it} also Russia was advised to use their skills to take advantage of their low dollar value to build products as China was up & coming but Russia had quality on their side. {I bet Putin regrets not making their own chips now}. I also wrote to US & Ru over Kosovo to work together - this resulted in K4 & they put a NZ army person in charge of both nations {me no kudos at all! but American embassy had respect to inform me of the results - Russia gave no feedback}

I`m sorry but this lady clearly has an agenda. she does not so much answer the questions (like some other speakers in the series did) - but uses them as a starting points to talk of what she wants; the way she describes Putin has very little to do with the personality any person speaking or understanding Russian language (not to mention those who have keen interest in the matter) can clearly see if they choose to - solely by listening to him himself (while he does never participate in any debates, he speaks a lot). but instead what she says repeats what federal media say in Russia 24/7, and what is not a profound knowledge nor analysis, just nothing really.

Russia has no real concept of a democracy as a participatory self ruling organization. A democracy is always a process permitting a constant accommodation to the inevitable problems that arise in human affairs. It takes work.
Russia seems unaware of the enormous theft the Russian nation has been subjected to in their trek toward self rule. There is so little understanding of the difference between government process as appearance and government effective problem solving done openly and with respect.
Russia has a huge corruption problem and that must be solved. As far as booms and busts in the oil industry: Get used to it! The industry has been up and down in oil prices for decades. Some of it is market fluctuation and more than a little is due to sheer price gouging and industry manipulation.
During boom times it is necessary to set aside some of the profits for times when the price of oil is not sufficient to keep the economy steady. Any country dependent on one industry must develop a more diverse economy. That is critical to Russia. The entire time of low oil prices could have led to an increase of tourism. It often does in other countries. This cannot take place if a country is constantly accusing the countries with tourists having disposable income of taking advantage of their country when the west is able to see the evidence of the corruption that is actively stealing Russia blind in front of the world.

Humans were the last creation on earth. The creator owns everything, self-serving people just took what they wanted for themselves and those who could benefit them. In the beginning, the earth was all one land mass, with water surrounding it. And then over time it slowly broke apart forming continents. And continents all have original countries, and renamed countries, through takeover for power, money, and more land by leaders and the military in hostile countries. Russia had many prior names as well. Humans first evolved in Africa. And migrated. Iraq is known as the Cradle of Civilization, where cities first formed and branched out. Do the research it will show you that the country you were born in, was originally called something else, and depending on its history larger or small than it is now. So, why are we fighting and killing innocent people for something that doesn't belong to any of us, we are only living on this planet on borrowed time, when we die, we don't take any possessions with us. Life is about finding your beneficial purpose and then benefitting others. Imagine how awesome the world would be if we all preached and practiced this. Anything else sets and keeps us backward.

God "Your letter helped that nation - you really helped them, or they would have gone through a lot of suffering - a lot of suffering. I am giving you 16 Russian wives for that! ....I am handing the nations over to you as the Unite Nations are Pathetic - the whole lot of them!" Many things were said regarding the future - including hind sight regarding running my country NZ {being a small country - and danger of becoming Americas new Enemy Number one if not careful - before God eventually said on favorble note "I made America from your descendants - they were the ones steering / directing the nation - Just To Show What I Could Do With You!"}. When God said that about America He mused of His Revelation to mankind. That is - just as the secular have no regard for God - the revelation is when people are awakened to the fact God made America from one man who followed / Obeyed Him - therefore God had something to work with. Gods musing was how the people of the world contempt of Him "will be totally shocked / Astounded at what God can do with a person.
Part 3. After God said all these things we joined up with Jesus and spoke. When God spoke to me separately - he was the God of Isaiah - clear - God like. But with Jesus there was a transition between Heavenly Father - and trechious snake. {no offense} But the feeling was according to Christian clappers were God had his scantimonius pork chop and could afford to throw me away. His Truth was there but also treachory. {though he put a fault in me deep seated / hard wired - to give him something to hammer out of me & if not hammered out would led to my destruction}. electrical lines that had been built from the mainland to Crimea. Khrushchev claimed that
it would be easier to administrate the connected oblasts if they were in one of the
SSR rather than split between Ukraine and Russia. (As long as the S.U. existed

Besides the former US Secretary of State, James Baker, *confirming* such a promise of *not* expanding NATO east had been made to Gorbachev, there is no need for American military bullying in Europe. Looking at the Snowden Leaks as an example e.g. spying on Merkel for many years on her phone.

Sure, the major problem with Trumpians is their love for the concept of truth - as opposed to Putin who just proclaims 'the truth is whatever we say' (as explicitly confirmed by this interviewee). What a lovely and sophisticated kind of epistemology, it surely will serve the Russian people well.

The U.S. gloated it knew everything near to what it needed to know AND DO during successive administrations. We made the major mistake of continuing to think in the absolute abstract of having this monolithic adversary instead of embracing a country of yearning individuals with needs just like our own. The cold designs of Dick Cheney and his ilk had no time or room for humanitarian considerations of any kind and Obama was preoccupied with major difficulties at home.

After half of America voted for Trump though I see there have been no lessons learnt. Those sweat shops have now turned into a massive manufacturing base though and as the USA showed in WW2; machines turning out ploughs and shears can be turned over to tanks and weapons in no time. China has a rotten human rights record and is a totalitarean regime at the end of the day. So I get the Trumpians, I'd wanna crash the system too in their place. Thankfully the word "Social" is still not a swear word here in The UK. Hoping Putin has woken the world up to just what a Totalitarean regime can do no matter what their people think. The old communist propaganda was readable as it inversed what was not suppossed to come out, believed in its own lies as well as the legitimate necessity to bring out lies. US propaganda, in general, is also selfdelusional and also the government variety apparently believes that lying is legitimate as long as it lies the truth (till Trump that is). However. Putin's propaganda is far more sophisticated. It is difficult to read because it is not the inverse of the truth but designed to be a smokescreen covering smokescreens, while the perpretrators are totally aware of their own amoral motives. Putin's style in many ways is still based on the communist way. For example he persistantly uses the strategy of on the one hand openly getting rid of opponents on the other arguing that he could never be behind it as that would be too obvious: thus informing the public it should not oppose him and next to that institutionalising a taboo to openly talk about exactly that), but the misinformation of his regime has totally outgrown the commu-nist tradition as well the US propaganda machine (still addicted to its own product).

@Wendy Knox actually, i speak seven languages. Indonesian, Javanese, bataknese, Chinese, English, hokkianese and cantonese. Some of them are not well-spoken, but i never do the 'um... um.. um..' because i know it is so irritating. When i struggle with the language, i simply PAUSE and do not add the UMMMM....

Her uhs & mms is her thinking out loud & not allowing her thoughts keep up with her speaking. I'm aware of the suggestions for public speaking to prevent the pattern; thanks for the suggestion. I try to give people a pass on public speaking, especially if it's not their primary language. I'm fortunate to have friends that speak multiple languages; one can speak/write 5! It's fascinating to ask about his thinking/speaking process. v

Luckily, (not so lucky living through it @ the time), I did grow up around geniuses; Mummy has a photographic memory & able to "read-see" 5(!) books in hours, a brother (older & I followed in school) that was described by a teacher as off the intelligence charts (she thought I didn't know how intelligent/smart my brother is, lol), & a younger brother that taught himself everything he wanted to learn just because he wanted to. Talk about pressure. I remember graduating with honors (3.75 GPA) & my Mummy telling me: "Well you didn't have a 4.0 like I did." Yeah, that told me I was basically NEVER going to be as good as her, nor my brothers; I made peace & celebrated their genius. I enjoy being around intelligence; ignorance, not so much... Now, I read & learn about everything that I can, knowing I'll never be able to achieve that goal; knowing everything. Thank you for your indulgence. Stay safe. v
