First video I have seen of yours. You are fantastic thank you. I am 70 years old and love backpacking and am ready to set off this year again. You are inspirational and might I add so so true about living in the moment. Well done.
Going backpacking through the UK in a week. If the birds there are as fit as you I'll probably end up canceling my return flight x) Also very nice video, I love how half these things where non-physical; these things aren't on a typical "what to bring" list but just as important (maybe even more so). If I were to add one thing physical it would be socks. Changing socks after a hike is a huge morale booster My non-physical thing would be a smile. Even if you don't speak someones language, there is still one language we all speak; joy
+PsychoTraveller This was some of the most inspiring stuff ever, The very last point you make is so huge, I really think people take this little thing for granted.
I'm curious how it went. Where did you go? I'm in a similar position but honestly, I don't really see how one canNOT plan. Not in a sense of nowing what to do each day, but researching the country you're going to, reading up on sights and things you'd like to be doing, applying IN TIME for visas, booking flights and connection flights IN TIME to avoid exorbitant fees...
I am all for this! I think there should be more videos. They are a great way to keep everyone back home updated with your adventure, a good memory to watch back in years to come but I wouldn't rely on making a good income from the videos. Just do them for fun and enjoy the process :)
One physical thing I've learned that you should carry is a pen. It goes along with the travel diary, but if you're not planning to write anything (you should even though you might not think you're good at it), a pen is a must. Lots of times either crossing borders (in Europe that might not be a problem) where you have to fill forms or even giving your info to someone you met who's cellphone just died. Also, I'm an anthropologist and one thing you can do to be more open minded about other's cultures is to think about how they would perceive yours. This is great because it makes you think that that thing you find culturally shocking might be normal for other people and the same goes for your culture, however western it may be, and then you'll find that it's not that big of a deal. Also think about yourself in the future telling your friends you did/ate that instead of missing out. Btw, love your videos!
This is really special. Number 10 is just... such a good piece of advice. Not just for travel but for life. I'm embarking on my first solo trip overseas in just over a month and your videos are a joy.
The last one is so true. When you put structure into your trips, it's the worst. Whenever I start feeling like "wow I got here! woo! now what!" I STAY there. If I'm on a road trip and I'm getting angsty, I STOP at the nearest place and STAY there for a few hours. Good way to meditate/soak up on the journey itself & remember why You're there. Gr8 vids PsychoTraveller.. ur getting me back into the vagabond spirit!!
Your travel videos are practical, deep, profound and incredibly inspirational. Why an open mind is an invaluable asset; why a rigid itinerary and obsession with an SLR could become burdensome and inhibit freedom. Very impressive.
I love the journal idea, I have always dreamed of travelling but I haven't started yet. I have however started a journal to just enjoy life in general and things that is catching my interest. Putting it on paper and putting in clippings is both therapeutic but appreciative of the little things that come across your path day to day. It's like the '"Enjoy Life" journal, all your interests, passions, thoughts, etc. I hope to one day add those 'adventures' around the world will be added to this journal. Love this idea, thank you. This is great video by the way
Thank you ! I loved # 10. (and all of the others, but especially 10) I'm about to head out on possibly 2-3 years of travel and I've just discovered your posts. I'm enjoying them and getting psyched for my own adventures!
I'm about to graduate High School and I really want to travel before I start college. I was a little skeptical about traveling on my own because I'm an 18 year old girl, but you have given me that last push I needed. I love your videos!
Your videos are amazing. Currently preparing to begin my experience traveling the world! The way you speak about it makes me feel completely sure I am making the right decision. The biggest problem I am having is deciding where to start! Haha.
+PsychoTraveller I know for sure I want to do the Inca trail to machu picchu. It seems like such an amazing, self fulfilling journey. I have to see the Aurora Borealis. The great Barrier Reef, mount emei in China, and langkawi are other places I'd like to go. my main issue is I think I don't want to start somewhere I'd immediately have to fly away from after flying there instead of just backpacking/hitch hiking/etc.
Hi! I'm from Malaysia, where Langkawi is located that is. How's your trip? Did you make it to Langkawi yet? I'm planning to go to Langkawi this year, around June or July. I've been there twice with my family but this time I'm planning to go with my friends.
Thanks so much for that video! Probably the best about traveling I've ever watched. Everyone talks about what to put inside backpack and other trivial stuff, but the mental things are what really matters. It really (re)opened my eyes. Thumbs up & greetings from Germany!
"A traveller should have no intent of arriving" Such a true and wonderful statement. I always enjoy the process of getting to wherever I set off to more than the destination itself. Very nicely said!
Just as you were talking about triggering memories and you said "a bunch of flowers from Florence" it all of a sudden triggered the memory of me watching that exact part of the video almost three years ago. Thought I'd only just found your channel recently but apparently past me got there first, at least he had good taste in videos.
You’re epic I LOVE the idea about “not arriving” so genius made me think back on some awful bus rides and how I could’ve made it more enjoyable and laugh back on it now.
I liked all of your points- very well thought out. :) I think another great thing to bring on a backpacking trip is a dry-bag, which you can get in a variety of sizes. Definitely a life saver for cameras/phones/wallets/etc in situations of rain (or doing a kayaking day trip).
You have a great attitude. I love the advice on mental items. I'm sorry there are so many trolls on here saying such ugly things. I've watched about 100 travel blogs and this is in my top 10.
Great job with the videos! I'm heading out of Canada for the next year (maybe more) and I love hearing from people who are more experienced as this is my first time out on my own. I really enjoy your thoughts on the whole arrival situation, I never thought of it like that I totally know what you mean! Thanks for the tips!
I love the tip about having no intention to arrive. In my normal everyday life, I just think in terms of getting to the point. So following your advice and not focusing on the end result is going to be a good way for me to grow. Thank you
Psycho Traveller u have become my travelling mentor! Thanks for sharing everything, it's such a help... Going away for 7 months soon and when I'm crapping myself, I turn to your videos! Cheers! x
Triggered so many memories!!! A pleasant feel good moment. Be prepared to change your itinerary and plans. That brought both amazing experiences and encouters on some of my trips.
Thanks for all the valuable info! A few days ago I started planning my trip to Europe for this summer! It'll be my first time traveling. Also, you're videos are soooo helpful, I take notes as I watch haha. Keep posting :) subbed.
My dream is to go backpacking some day and I've been looking all over RUclips for some good advice. This video was truly inspiring and has only left me craving the sense of travel even more than before. Thank you for the wonderful advice and I hope to take it every where I go. And I think that my experience is the most in,portent thing in my life! "What can I give and what can I get" kinda thing
Absolutely love your videos, so helpful! I'm leaving for Australia in a few weeks to work and travel and only for your videos if be lost, they've helped me so much! Can I ask where you get your travel journals from? 😊
Disposable cameras can be awkward when you want to get hem developed, if you are taking a lot of pictures, which you will no doubt, then disposable cameras are a lot of money to keep buying and getting developed. Plus no, no weapons are ever needed. :)
I did not take your advice and spent three days in London hobbling around because I was so excited when I got there I ended up walking 15 hours after my arrival, Soft shoes is for sure the way to go! My trip alone was great and I am headed to Europe alone again in April, Your tips are brilliant thanks...We're listening!
This is a really thoughtful list. Like seriously, I really loved this video. I sometimes struggle a bit with what you said at the end about the intent of arriving. How do you personally balance planning with being spontaneous in each place? Because its important to see the main sights in a city, but where do you draw the line?
Most important spiritual thing, when I am travelling, is having no plan, no expectations. Being able to change my plans in every minute proved me many times, that real travel begins, when you're done with all the schedule, just going for whatever seems fun at the moment I've been working in the hostel long enough to notice, that those who are visiting in a panic that they don't see all the stuff they planned, are the most miserable ones, that actually never discover a real charm of the place.
I think one of the best things to bring is a disposable camera (yes those things do exist). Because you have limited shots, it really forces you to think about each picture and think about what's the most important. The photos may not turn out to be perfect, but that's kinda the point, it makes them more special.
I am so glad I discovered this channel today. Done some travelling around Europe but taking a major trip to Sydney shortly. Excited yet nervous too. Were you nervous before your first big trip?
Loved what you said about not being set on "arriving". It made me think of my train trip from the bottom of Germany (Freiburg) down to Venice. I was so tired, the trip took hours, probably 6 or 8, I was also super worried my visa wasn't going to make it into Italy ... Despite my fatigue and nerves, I was constantly absorbing. Absorbing the scenery, the people, the conversations, and of course, journaling like crazy. ;) Happy memories, thank you. ^_^ P.S I got into Italy very legally hehe
In my opinion, nothing beats iron caps as travelling shoes!! I mean... they're mostly waterproof, tough, compfortable.... everything you could ever want!!
Absolutely in love with your spirit, well whatever amount I can sense by watching your videos - something very 'old soul' about you. I love it! A big smile to you. :D
Two weeks ago I was kidnapped by a Tuk Tuk in Bangkok. He took me into a dark ally where eleven men were waiting. I truly thought I was going to die. They were reaching in trying to touch me. My screams got the attention of two monks who walked down the ally and confronted the men. They saved my life. They gave me enough time to run. Having eyes open is so important. I was counting hotels and was able to get to one for safety. No one talks about how dangerous Bangkok has become. I met so many solo female travelers who have had similar experiences.
Y Welch that is so frightening! I'm glad you're okay. Do you think Bangkok is generally safe if you're traveling in a group? Is it okay in the day time?
Thank You so much for your advice. My best friend and I are goung to backpack Europe and then Morocco. You have been invaluable with your information. I'm so glad I found you. I forward every video link. 😁
Mmm disagree about the walking shoes, 95% of the time there just dead weight and are super annoying. what I prefer is a decent set of high tops such as converse, super light weight, dry quickly and have ankle support, sure there not suitable to hard core hiking but much 'travel hiking' is on relatively even trails. but good video :) and I could not agree more with the last point! Plans ruin travelling
Earplugs. Patience. A sarong. A friendly attitude. A smartphone (yes). Flexibility. A sleeping bag liner (serves as a lightweight sleeping bag). A willingness to try to learn some of the language of your destination.
I get catatonic taking it all in putting it all in, sometimes I revel but I never rush the boredom and pain away I bask and languish. BTW apoligize to my SLR!
Jessica Benn Yes, a journal/blog is a great way to keep track of all the little things. But you will always have the memories in your head, which is the best place! =]
great video im planning my first solo trip awseome advice i have certainly took this advice onboard. definetley be watching more of your videos peace x
I don't know how to thank you and even by saying thank you is not even good enough you truly inspired me and I'm taking my first step to travel to Malaysia I wish I can triple the likes but all I can give is one take care.
I wore these xero sandals to hike a couple 10s of miles and they were so much better than any of my hikers or walkers. However, I've never hiked in a cold or wet environment lol.
About the camera - I totally agree. I AM a professional photographer, so going traveling without it just pains me. There's no way. But unless you'e a professional, definitely leave it at home.
I only use my DSLR when I go to weddings and receptions. But when I travel, for my personal use, now a days, the technology is different there are point and shoot camera's that are almost in par with a DSLR quality. I'm taking about $700 above point and shoot Canon or Sony. Yes, special if you are going to a third world country it's an attraction to get robbed or stolen.
Great video! I'm going to Australia in a month, mainly because it is a country in which the people speak English, now while I speak English and French, this seemed like a good place to travel alone for the first time. A concern of mine is the language barrier, how do you go to a country where you don't speak a lick of the language when you land??
What countries have you visited and which did you enjoy the most? Also, do you have any essential advice for a first time traveller? I'm planning to travel across Western Europe when I'm 18 next year and I'm not sure where to start!
hi, really enjoyed your videos: Thank you for your information. I have one question about the camera, right now I am preparing all the staff, but I have no idea what kind of camera should I buy, So I would like to know that what camera did you use???
First video I have seen of yours. You are fantastic thank you. I am 70 years old and love backpacking and am ready to set off this year again. You are inspirational and might I add so so true about living in the moment. Well done.
+Rosemary Roberts Thank you so much! Keep living the dream!! :D
+PsychoTraveller and don't wake up!
you should make some videos im sure you have stories
Rosemary Roberts omg this is so cool, are you still backpacking? we should meet and be friends hehe ;)
a backpacker needs a backpack lol
lool

+PsychoTraveller This was some of the most inspiring stuff ever, The very last point you make is so huge, I really think people take this little thing for granted.
Im starting my first Solo Travel adventure in 5 weeks with literally no plans! IM PACKING MYSELF!!!!!
Wayward Joshy how is it going dude?✨

+Billy Ward Yes, the biggest and best problem to have! Where have you narrowed it down to?
+PsychoTraveller I know for sure I want to do the Inca trail to machu picchu. It seems like such an amazing, self fulfilling journey.
I have to see the Aurora Borealis.
The great Barrier Reef, mount emei in China, and langkawi are other places I'd like to go.

im french and our english teacher ask us to watch this video for our homework cuz we're currently working on couchsurfing
+Parindian Girl wut? you have to do work on couchsurfing in school? that's sound
You’re epic I LOVE the idea about “not arriving” so genius made me think back on some awful bus rides and how I could’ve made it more enjoyable and laugh back on it now.
Beautifully articulated final point! I couldn't agree more. Thanks for all the useful advice. Subbed.

Hi! I am literally obsessed with all your videos. This was great advice and I can't wait to begin my travels.
I got so caught up in traveling that I lost count of my money. I ended up selling my gopro to other traveler for money. haha
Sewing kit? nah, duct tape! nothing that stuff can't fix, could've kept the Titanic afloat with it.
Triggered so many memories!!! A pleasant feel good moment.
Be prepared to change your itinerary and plans. That brought both amazing experiences and encouters on some of my trips.
Your 10th one was so inspirational!! Love it :) you are amazing !:)
Also, floss is probably the best sewing thread you could ever find!! Seriously.
Thanks for all the valuable info! A few days ago I started planning my trip to Europe for this summer! It'll be my first time traveling. Also, you're videos are soooo helpful, I take notes as I watch haha. Keep posting :) subbed.
The planning part is so exciting! The last part made me giggle. Enjoy your travels! :)
The last tip really opened my eyes and mind for when I travel I can't wait

You have changed my life, you're my favourite RUclipsr ever xxx
I like the last one. It's the very basis of Backpacking :D Keep up the good Work :D

My gosh, you are charming! Liked the video. Most 'what you need' video's are all about the materials, yours is much more.
This is a really thoughtful list. Like seriously, I really loved this video. I sometimes struggle a bit with what you said at the end about the intent of arriving. How do you personally balance planning with being spontaneous in each place? Because its important to see the main sights in a city, but where do you draw the line?

I love the last note. Don't worry for arrival. True.
I will definitely find a way of answering this one as it is a common question but also a very difficult question to answer! I shall try my best :)
I think one of the best things to bring is a disposable camera (yes those things do exist). Happy memories, thank you. ^_^
P.S I got into Italy very legally hehe
I did my solo backpack in Mekong region. Advices I really agree - getting lost, a versatile outdoor shoe, slim camera/ smartphone.
indeed with you. backpacker means a journey to experience a new culture and other life.
What are your thoughts on couch surfing? And are hostels better? They obviously are more expensive.
2 weeks to go to our first eurotrip (me and 3 friends).... great advice! Will definitely use it :) thanks!!
thank you for your videos! they really inspire me to travel :)
''Life is a journey, we all have the same end... some ends may differ'' - must remember to get that on a vest before I start my journey. Profound.
+Sara Hayes Fisher yes I caught that too. But I think what she meant was the roads we travel may differ but we all have the same end. Be nice.
Wonderful!! :) We hope to run into you in one of our trips !
Get lost is probably the greatest advice for anyone who seeks a unique trip :)
Absolutely! The memories you make then are the ones you tend to hold onto forever!
Thank You so much for your advice. My best friend and I are goung to backpack Europe and then Morocco. You have been invaluable with your information. I'm so glad I found you. I forward every video link. 😁
great video. im an absolute amateur looking to backpack for a year or so this summer. thanks for the advice
I shall be doing a "What's in my backpack" this week before I leave :)

I love these videos, you're amazing. Keep it up.
I wish I watched this video before I left for my trips this past summer.
I did not have a travel journal and I wish I had
Jessica Benn Yes, a journal/blog is a great way to keep track of all the little things. But you will always have the memories in your head, which is the best place! =]
great video im planning my first solo trip awseome advice i have certainly took this advice onboard. definetley be watching more of your videos peace x
You r funny!!! And ur view on Never Arriving is a note in my book. Thx for sharing
I had some difficulties to understand you but thank you! I solved some doubts :)
Thanks!! this was really helpful
I did a trekking tour in summer and I think that a pocket knife is the most important thing to take!
Wow great video, especially your last tip!
I think I covered a lot of these things in my blogs while travelling around the world twice!
Fun video, and good tips. :) Love backpacking!
Aside from the obvious like documents, I'd say the last one was the most important of them all if you are backpacking/travelling for pleasure.
I love the #10. Your right about that..yay!!
thanks for the advise really put your heart in explaining :)
I don't know how to thank you and even by saying thank you is not even good enough you truly inspired me and I'm taking my first step to travel to Malaysia I wish I can triple the likes but all I can give is one take care.

I really really loved your last point.
You are fantastic. Great list!
Never comment on videos. First time travelling to OZ and Asia in April. Great advice, such a cool girl 👌 x
Extremely sorry! I have been ill all this week so I wasn't able to upload by Wednesday. Sorry again :( xx
great video!

But when I travel, for my personal use, now a days, the technology is different there are point and shoot camera's that are almost in par with a DSLR quality. I'm taking about $700 above point and shoot Canon or Sony. Yes, special if you are going to a third world country it's an attraction to get robbed or stolen.
Where did you get the red and blue travel journal, that one looks really lovely?
Great video! I'm going to Australia in a month, mainly because it is a country in which the people speak English, now while I speak English and French, this seemed like a good place to travel alone for the first time. A concern of mine is the language barrier, how do you go to a country where you don't speak a lick of the language when you land??
What countries have you visited and which did you enjoy the most? Also, do you have any essential advice for a first time traveller? I'm planning to travel across Western Europe when I'm 18 next year and I'm not sure where to start!
the last point was really good !!!
Excellent Advice, Thank you
