If remains always a mystery ,why in Met she didn't know the success she had in Europe. She was a perfect singer with great training (Hariclea Darclee),& easy top. (But she didn't have Milanov's volume)
That high C should be sung pianissimo as written by Verdi, Milanov sang it beautifully, as did Caballe much later, but it was a difficult note even for the likes of Ponsell and Tebaldi...
That high C is supposed to be sung piano or even pianissimo as I heard Milanov sing it in the early 50s or as Caballe did in the 70s. Listen to their recordings.

Her bad luck was that Zinka Milanov was the reigning Verdi soprano at the Met at the time.
Stella Roman, in my humble opinion, is a more subtle and more sensitive interpreter than Zinka Milanov. And the timbre is just exquisite.

There can be a strong dolce high C too...
