  • It might not look it but in this video I-80 was as slick as a banana peel. Blowing snow made visibility touch and go. Okay, after many comments of No Slip and Slide I have added a Link to part 2, Thank You Wyoming State Patrol. That is the conclusion to this video. If you have never lost traction in the middle of a busy dangerous highway It is scary. I just knew I was going to be run down. Thank God and the State trooper who stopped to help me out.

Wow this reminds me of my first two years driving . I drove for a little company out of Texas. I spent two and half winters driving and running I 80 Sacramento Portland and Trout dale, and Seattle puddle jumping out to Connecticut and Mass and Jersey. Hard years but I loved it. I learned a lot of lessons on those roads and in a truck with no jakes. Made Cabbage and Donner interesting.

As a MM pin holder, I see a whole bunch of stupid drivers here. First is the flatbed hauling the pipe. He was too damn close to the truck in front of him. The Werner driver was going way too slow, that caused the truck behind him, in front of the tanker, to try to move into the other lane and caused the truck coming up on the left to hit his breaks.
I can honestly say, I do not miss that at all.

This stretch of I80 between Laramie and Cheyenne, WY is notorious for white outs, icy conditions, and poor snow and ice treatments from the state. My hubby was the last truck off the road before they closed it after that terrible pile up in April of 2015. And there was another one a month ago. He drives this road all the time. I worry all the time too. Had his first accident in 20 years on Jan 7th, when a United Van lines driver tried to run him out of the passing lane. He saved the truck from more damage by heading over onto the shoulder. When the other guy realized what was happening, he jack knifed his truck and in the motions, clipped the left front and fender, and took out the side view mirror of our brand new 2019 Freightliner. Nobody was driving fast 35MPH. But we scrapped together the 2K to get it DOT legal again. Side mirrors and headlight and turn signal cams are not cheap. We will get the other minor damage fixed later when the insurance company gets their shit together. And he is driving up there again today, he said the snow was blowing across the road so bad, you could hardly see where the road was so he rode the rumble strip to make sure he was on the road until he finally said, screw this and got off the road.

    • @mackdaddy1911a1

I can tell you this he did the right thing. I made it through after I broke traction. The WSP saved my butt. Trooper had a shovel and used it to throw some dirt under my drives. That little bit got me going again. The lessons I took away from that keep a shovel in the truck and only drive out there with really good drive tires.
Thank you for sharing . Tell your Ole man to Keep on trucking.

What a shit. I am a retired German trucker. Such weather conditions require a 6x4 or better 6x6 drive or a differential at least. I have had a similar situation 5 years ago in Finland north of the polar circle. I have had a student driver by my side ( 3 rd year ) . yto become a professional driver in Germany you have to learn three years. My assistent driver has sweated blood and water but it was a good experience for him. He is an excellent driver now and one can send him on the one lane roads of the Norwegian mountains.
Btw there are some excellent movies by NorgeChris and guusontour about driving unter winter conditions in Norway.

I heard you guys got hammered with 100 inches of snow at higher altitudes this past week. I have drive through several of the bad blizzards (normal winter night in WY) in the past. -70 wind chill and the truck's engine didn't register above 100 degrees on the temperature gauge. Brand new Freightliner at the time. The temperature difference was so wide the doors warped and let a draft in on my left leg. Never had that problem in my MACK. Nearly froze my face off my first trip out there. Not my kind of weather. Y'all are some tough folks that is for damn sure.

Snow is not bad its that damn ice and hills. Wyoming has some very curvy, very long drawn out hills. I-80 is the main corridor between the east and west. If you need to get to the Midwest from California, Salt Lake City UT or central Idaho, and Oregon, you have to go through there so there are so many Trucks driving through there. You cant get stuck on one of those hills, another truck will come through and hit you. Many, many wrecks on I-80

I spent almost as much time traveling sideways as I did going straight ahead. Just outside Lincoln I found a plowed ramp and spent the night. The next day I somehow made to to over to Cheyenne. That's when the real fun began. The climb over the hill to Laramie had me crapping my pants. Couldn't see shit. Total whiteout. Snow. Ice. Shit. Trucks were all over the road. Many were way, way off the road. It was insanity. At Laramie I meet up friends at the Pilot. We had no choice to chill out. I-80 was shutdown. Two day later it was re-opened and off we went. I dragged that empty box over Elk Mountain. Wasn't bad if you don't mind having to constantly fight to keep the trailer in the rear. Damn thing kept want to switch ends with the tractor. Oh, the adventures of over the road. Hours of utter boredom, followed by even more boredom, and then things get exciting. Is it worth it?

A lot of accidents happen when people follow too closely, since they passed turn right on red in the state of NORTH carolina people pull out in front of you just as you get up on them and over half the time they drive really slow. Peoples stupidity cause a lot of accidents. Years back they drove normal and respected other drivers, now it looks like their brain just isn't working. I'm talking about us car drivers. But people's driving is a whole lot different now.

I've driven on worse roads. I-90 through Montana the end of December of last year, 2017, and the beginning of January this year, I was driving in ice and snow, it was like they didn't treat the roads at all, it was scary, my max speed through the was like 40, most of the time I was only doing like 30, max. I didn't feel safe driving through there but the company I was driving for kept pushing me, needless to say, I don't drive for them anymore.

When it blows like that, I think wind driven turbines to power the pavement heater. But the pavement heater device must be resilient to the constant pounding of the pavement by equipment rolling over it. That is the problem with electrical solutions, the weakest point is the junction points.

One time, driving through South Dakota and Montana, I was driving my 2005 GMC Sierra half ton extended cab with my roughly 900 pound pop up camper on the back in the winter time, Visibility was literally zero, especially when following another vehicle just because of the snow they were kicking up let alone all of the powder snow falling from the sky. If you think the visibility in this video is bad imagine 10x worse. It was literally so bad you couldn't see another vehicle 20 feet in front of you, it was just all a white blur. Well, I was hauling pushing 90 MPH at times (Not a great idea) I believe the speed limit was 70 MPH or something on this 2 lane road. It was so blinding that after just a couple minutes of watching the road and when I looked back at the dash everything was this wavey blur. Basically the same thing that happens when you do an optical illusion like this one, ruclips.net/video/Z0aLjw52ip4/видео.html So anyway, I'm going down the road and I'm about to get into this little town (Not that I could see it anyway) and then all of a sudden my radar detector just goes crazy and I'm like that's great, out of the white blizzard there's a cop sitting in the oncoming lane ahead of me with his lights on and I'm like well this sucks. I think he only got me for like 75- or so in a 70 so he let me off with a warning, which was very kind of him.
But you see, the reason I was in a 'hurry' was I was trying to get from Paducha Kentucky to Butte Montana in 2 days, which is roughly a 24 hour straight drive, so I was having to push 13-ish hours a day after stopping and stuff (Supplemented by my speeding, of course) which made for pretty long days. And I didn't want to drive in this snow storm at night time because that's even worse but if I did the 'safe' speed for the conditions that would have made me drive at night, and I also didn't want to pull over for the night when it got dark because by that point I'd have been only a couple 2 or 3 hours from home. So, that was my logic as to why it was better to speed during the day time to get to my destination, although, it's obviously never advised. It was also very cold outside, I mean like -10 to -25 degrees so I wasn't sleeping in my camper and I'm not paying for a dumb hotel, and I'm not turning my truck off unless it's to get gas, because it may not start again lol. But anyway, yeah this video looked like cake to drive in, minus the black ice of course, that's never cake. Glad it worked out well for you.
