George asked Paul to keep it simple, and THIS is what Paul gave him. Saying it is busy may be an understatement, yet in the end it's absolutely perfect.
Definitely one of the best. Maybe technically there's far better but not many have more memorable and fitting bass lines than McCartney. I'll take that all day over someone who can wank the fretboard and creates nothing worth remembering, anybody can do that with practice.
I always watch his videos more than once. First, to see the never disappointing bass performance and then I dedicate myself to seeing his wonderful masks. I like many of them. Wait a second, maybe they're real heads and he's a monster hunter.
I, too, like a well anchored thumb. "Something" is a great bass piece. Many people believe Paul is underrated as a bass player and if you really listen to Beatle stuff he's all over the fret board but it never gets in the way of the song. My personal fave Beatle bass line is "Rain." Ringo is widely acknowledged on that one as having delivered one of his best performances as well.
Some guys can float their hand around and do just fine, but I like my plucking hand on solid ground. I mentioned to someone else that I'd read somewhere that Paul McCartney would often record his bass last in order to get the line to really stand out by filling in the blank spaces and not clashing with anything else that was going on in the song. I don't think I've ever heard "Rain", I'll have to check it out.
TJH3113 I hope you've heard Rain by now. I mostly float my thumb, using it mainly for muting but occasionally anchor when I really need to dig in. I also flip from fingerstyle to using my index fingernail to get a percussive pick sound at certain points in some songs.
Beautiful! My husband, also a great bass player, passed in 2018. He would play "Something" for me often. I love your channel. I wanted to thank you and your channel for being one of the things I could go to for help through the last three years. I've started picking up his basses. I might try to learn something myself Lol. Thanks again! You're Awesome!
Just want to let you know my video for my cousin is done. I will post it this week ( just working on the titles) I could not have learned the bass part without your help. thank you for helping this idea come to fruition. It will be called something for cliff.
One of George's most beautiful songs. And McCartney put together one of his best bass performances on this. The other gem is Here Comes the Sun. Nicely played!
Thank you for posting this. I am making a tribute to a late cousin and learning the bass from this video. We always played Beatle songs together ( guitar only) and always wanted to do this song. Since he is gone now I am doing the entire song in his memory I bought an ignition hofner and have 90% of the song down just from this video. Its the last bit thats getting me.
I'm so sorry to hear about the loss of your cousin. It's nice of you to honor him with the music you once played together. I'm glad that you found the video helpful.
Thank you. I thought this would be a nice tribute since it was the last song we tried to learn together. Neither of us professionals, Im a physician he was a plater. I don't think I will obtain the playing quality you have with the smooth slide etc. I could not use my two fingers with any rhythm to say the least so Im picking all the notes. I have to say yours was probably the most accurate of all the posts.
Watched video to find fault with your playing but I can't: you play with subtlety and nuance - so nice! Way back, I read an interview with George talking about what a jerk Paul was during the breakup. But then he also said how generous and giving Paul could be and George cited Paul's bass playing on "Something" as an example. I think Paul always loved this song, he does it on tour in tribute to George, but goes from ukulele (which George gave him) to 6-string and doesn't reprise his magnificent bass part - Too bad! I listen to Abbey Road at least once a week.
I've always see Paul's bass playing on something as almost a statement like; okay George you wrote a brilliant song, so I'm going to play a brilliant part on the bass. So there.
The way I heard the story was that George DIDN'T want a crazy Macca bass line on this song, and had recorded his own version with his 6-string Fender bass. Paul came in the studio later, and added this bass part without George knowing! The 1st time George heard it was on the radio! GREAT COVER by the way. I wish you had used the Hofner (even though it is difficult to get THAT tone!) P.S. I saw Macca in 2014 - did the ukulele tribute to George - it was awesome!
I love playing this bass line. My band Something as a cover. I was very happy when a guy noticed how well I played it. I only imitated Paul's genius. I wish I could write like that. Frank Sinatra said this was the most beautiful song he ever heard and coverd it.
Your left hand articulation is wonderful - sliding in and out of notes appropriately, gentle vibrato here and there. I definitely feel the difference when this is played with the fingers rather than a pick since it's less muted and "plump", but put that aside and this performance is brilliant. Thank you for sharing - one Beatle bass fan to another.
Repeatedly, I have seen this guy actually play the bass line better than the original bassist did. I play bass and when I see how this guy is so crisp and clean with his play. Timing perfect, tone perfect.
Great playing on this one. One of the most amazing bass lines. Considering it is a soft love song yet he is so busy with this bass line. You would think it would be "overplaying", but the note selection and rhythmic statements are just perfect.
You are a treasure on the internet. I've learned so much from you. One question - Geddy Lee has said Jack Cassidy was one of his main inspirations. Why have you not covered "Somebody to Love" - seminal bass playing and in addition I can't find an accurate bass cover of the tune. Even my Berklee-trained bass teacher has questions on what Jack is playing in a couple of places - questions ONLY TJH3113 can answer!
Oh please... Thanks for the kind words though. I think I looked into it back when I first got the Guild hollow-body but can't remember what put me off. Not sure if it was the tuning or the difficulty in hearing the bass. I'll check it out again though. Thanks for the suggestion.
Very well done! One of my all time favorite bass lines. Although I am not quite to the point of your unbridled expressiveness, this was the first song I learned when I bought my first bass! I then knew I was hooked. I've never looked back since:) I am definitely looking into that thumb rest. Beautiful bassline, beautiful lyrics!
Congratulations on the TJH performance. The bass as it should be played, the music as it should be interpreted by the professional. No unnecessary flourishes with harmony making that bed to the ground. I'm impressed with his technique every time I watch. Your fan.
Thanks Troy , Listening to " Something " The way you laid down the Bass Paul McCartney would be proud. Geddy Lee, Paul McCartney and You in no particular order are my favorite Bassists of all time. Happy New Year brother, Peace.
George has always been my favorite (by a narrow margin) Beatle. Such a beautiful song and McCartney shows him love with his incredibly beautiful bass line.
Really nice playing. How McCartney came up with that is beyond me.Macca has music written all over him.One of the biggest talents in the music profession by far.
Great job - as with all your vids. I just can't get over how melodic a lot of Mac's bass parts are - it's amazing. So glad to see how it was actually played. Nothing easy here - again, great job! Love your bass cover vids.
Very smooth indeed Troy ... shows that Sir Paul wasn't just a "simple" bassist .... thought i'd like to have a go at some Beatles stuff myself and you're my first stop to see where i need to be aiming with technique.
Wow! Would I be wrong in saying something like..."McCartney's bass playing is just as cool and clever as Geddy Lee's." It's your vids that are making me feel this way. So melodic!
I've been grounding my hand using the pickup for lack of a better grounding spot, but after seeing this I emailed the company to get more details & pricing since I have a 2006 Geddy Lee model. Thanks for letting us know about them! As always nice job on the cover too. McCartney is still one of the best bass players even though his bass lines are simple.
I'm really happy with the rests, I hope you are as well if you do get one. Thanks. As far as "simple" goes, this is far from that. It was for me anyway.

Clean looking and sounding bass. Nice job! I saw the thumb rest you had for the Ric. Great idea which kinda means considerations for pickup placement are left out of the equation.
Love this bass line. Also, thanks a lot for showing off the thumb rest. I recently got my first Jazz bass, and the one thing I could complain about was the lack of space to put my thumb. I'm really going to look into this.
Me too. I'm really happy with the thumb-rests. They're well designed and install easily using the existing screw holes so an idiot like myself can install them with very little difficulty.
Very well done! I too am a fan of an anchored thumb and had to install a thumb rest on my Music Man. I'm not a fan of playing up by the bridge and was worried about flubbing the installation on a higher end instrument. But it worked and made a world of difference. Love your stuff.
Thank you. You know, Zero-Mod makes a thumbrest for many basses (including MusicMan) that use existing screw holes and don't require any drilling into the bass.
Troy I don't understand how you aren't a very famous bass player. It's not like you're like me and can only cover songs and have an inability to write as we've seen with your original songs (which I wish I could see more of). Superb playing, Troy. A great bass line too. It's interesting that Harrison originally accused McCartney of 'scribbling' all over his song. When, historically Macca always 'plays to the song' ...sometimes with the most unusual lyrical phrasing, such as tunes like this one and 'Glass Onion'. Probably, one of the most 'musical' players ever.
Thanks. I'm not much of a Beatles aficionado but do respect them and McCartney. I read somewhere once that he would record his bass lines last in order to make the parts stand out and not clash with anything else. I think I'd love to have the opportunity to do that.
Never has there been a more inappropriately busy bass part that is absolutely perfect in every way.
Truth.
I often wonder if there was resentment on George’s behalf…
‘ One of my best songs and you STILL had to make it about you!’
George asked Paul to keep it simple, and THIS is what Paul gave him. Saying it is busy may be an understatement, yet in the end it's absolutely perfect.
Perfect
One of the most subtly complex bass lines of all time. Beautiful stuff.
complex and harmonic
