Split step is literally super important in these sports, and even the other players on the court were so confused on what call was. Commentator talking nonsense too
The commentator obviously never played sports, split steps get you into an athletic position. The noise argument it also wild considering they have fans in the stands
I was at the Mesa MLP all 3 days. The fans were respectful during play. No yelling or loud talking during play. I also seen a teammate standing near the line but NOT PLAYING yell out on a close ball. He and his team was not penalized in fact they won the whole thing. Fan noise only happened AFTER the point.
Agreed with Sven Jorgenson, the announcer that defends the ump must have been from the same athletic background as the umps, never played sports. Good footwork and staying on their toes during a point, by product is squeaky feet. MLP is new and as an organization will have growing pains, but to have an umpire who is out of their mind to call hindrance for squeaky feet and to follow it up with an announcer who doesn't have a clue, MLP has set the bar low for a quality league.
I've seen good amateur refs, college baseball umps for instance but they get paid. The key is training, as you said. FYI pro tennis chair umpires can make $70K per year.
This ref just made MLP the fail list. I can see the new pro athlete owners and investors cringe watching this call. “Why is this ref f’ing up my league, bro?!”
Maybe not. The call, as bad as it was, created clicks. This video has six times more views than this channel has subscribers. MLP most likely wants people talking about their events. Name recognition.
Ho hum, a pro match with bad officiating. Just another pro pickleball game as far as I can tell. Then to make matters worse someone decides they are going to video replay a SUBJECTIVE call?!? There is no other sport where that can be reviewed by video. Little League umpires are trained to NOT do this. Make your call, right or wrong and stick by it. I think certified Little League umps are actually very well trained. The LAST thing you want to do is let the team called against talk you into changing your call unless it's in the rule book that it's OK. Hint: It's not. If you do then on subsequent calls the other team has a LEGITIMATE right to say on the next bad call "you changed your last call for them. Why not change it for us?" At this point the refs have lost control of the game. To be clear, I don't blame this ref per se for this cluster muck. I blame the poorly written rule book and whoever, if anybody, who is in charge of training and certifying the refs.
@@jimzimmerman5288 I'm sure you're talking about games where ESPN or the major networks are broadcasting. In the thousands of local games they cannot be overturned. FYI I'm not a LL ump but I know how they're trained and certified. Either way, thank you for the information. I know I'm being critical but my true desire is to see Pickleball grow and take its place among the established pro sports. I believe professionals are needed at all levels of pro Pickleball, not just the players.
It's a good rule to prevent Intentionally distracting the opponent and it's in the rule book of other major racquet sports such as racquetball. I've see (loss of) point hinders but it's easy to spot. Stomping the feet multiple times intentionally is a point hinder. A simple split step, even if it's louder than all the other split steps, is not.
@@voiceofreason9238 In Tennis I understand because everyone is so quiet but in Pickleball with public noise.... makes not to much sense to me. But, rules are rules...
James was split stepping on the baseline during the serve, it's just something he does. I think rules are evolving and hindrances should be more delineated
These Ref calls are good. I would rather watch a couple bad calls mixed in then to watch no calls at all. Enforcement of the rules is good but the review time needs to speed up big time.
C'mon James - we all know (including yourself) that you foot-stomped extra loud just as she was hitting. The split-step excuse gives you an "out", but it was obvious. I have NEVER seen you "split-step" so extra loud before or since. Rule CLEARLY states that "foot-stomping" can be called as a distraction. Please don't be that guy - you are too good to resort to such tactics. We all know MLP wants the drama for ratings, but... you know... You say you are a "weird player", so here is an idea: Freaking LOAD UP on taco bell before a match and start crackin' rats as they are hitting (please wear dark shorts).

The announcers defending the refs are next level cringe.
Exactly. "I saw it too." 😂
She's been the worst announcer.
Glad they waved it off. Bad call ref.

Hindrance? NO! Distraction? You might make the argument, but please don't tell me the sport is going in this direction!
Okay!!! No more volunteer Refs. they need to be paid and trained! seen some real bad calls lately!
This guy is a great ref, just a bad call today

Voice, the little league ump call can be reviewed and over turned.

What did they decide after the review? couldn't hear at the end
Waved it off. No fault.
The call was reversed and the point played over. That was the consensus correct way to deal with the bad call.
Ridiculous
everything about this video is why people don't take pickleball serious. what a mess
Lollll so soft
Where are the pickles?
🤔
This is crazy!! What a dumb rule!

Jim Ryan is a great official. If I had to guess, it was brought to his attention to be on a lookout for such hinders and pulled the trigger.

dumb call

100%
😂
That was a stupid call….the crowd was making more noise than his feet hitting the floor…it’s not golf people it’s pickleball
He definitely tried to use the split step as a distraction lol. Homie almost tore a hamstring

Can’t play real tennis. Pickle ball sucks
Shut the f up, you don't know what you're talking about. 6 of my friends from tennis have now converted to pickleball, and we love it.
Jealousy is soooo boring.
What a stupid call. Just ban running to the ball while you're at it
🤣
