    There have been a couple of think pieces on this subject that pointed out that in earlier centuries, physical affection was far more common in platonic relationships. Friends used to walk down the street arm in arm. There were also "platonic romantic" relationships where the two friends felt a romantic attachment, but it was not sexual.
    I also read that in Roman times, a man would go with his best friend to a temple to swear allegiance to each other for life because of their affection for each other - even though they might both be married.
    Now we overvalue romantic relationships and undervalue friend relationships.

      Yes... and King David and his best friend Johnathan had no problem showing affection. This recent generation sexualizes EVERY THING.... It makes me tired. UGH...

    47:22 - I hate people like this and you handled it really well. It's hard not to get immediately defensive and angry at a person like that, and you handled it with grace.
    Personally, I'm a bit more petty - if you're going to make me uncomfortable, I'm going to make you uncomfortable (obviously with nuance - there are times where it is innocent misunderstanding and we give grace to that too). Some of my favourite ways to approach situations like that are 1) "I don't get what you mean," and force them to have to jump through hoops to try and explain without saying outright that they just don't like women - and just do that on repeat until they make themselves uncomfy - or - 2) "That's an interesting thing to say," it forces the person to have to justify what they're saying, and I then usually follow up with, "Okay, but why did you feel you needed to tell me that?" - or - "Okay, I get that is how you feel, but how were you expecting me to react to that comment?" and just watch them start to work out that what they said was an inside thought, haha

    I feel like the dating story at the 30 minute mark was more complicated. So many people struggle with turning down a person with grace. He probably thought that saying "sorry, not a match, wish you the best" would be callous. Being rejected without getting a reason, if it comes at the wrong time it can make you spiral, wondering which dumb joke or which feature on your body was SOO irredeemable. So he gave an external reason that couldn't be taken as a shortcoming about her. Maybe it was masking his real reason, but it's valid and unsurprising that some people really don't like dogs or are afraid of them, and semiregularly dog-sitting on weekends (when most couples find time to be together) is close enough to having a pet. It could also just be a neurotic cleanliness-germ thing. I once saw my cousin's dog pick up a rotting corpse of a rodent MOUTHwise and fight when my cousin tried to take it away. I could never see the dog the same way after that, and still so many people kiss their dogs on the mouth, or have the dog licking their hand eating tidbits during dinner. The utter lack of disgust that dogs have is a marvel of evolution. Still possible that the guy really was just trying to create some artificial distance early on and still reap relationship benefits! That's pretty common too.

      it's kind of like he tried to gave her an easy out. the thing he said wasn't something big, but bigger than "oh you like red wine, i like white, it'll never work". I hate ghosting so I can't be policing when people end something with me awkwardly but politely. then he didn't even say we're not a match, he said we can find better matches. He sounds like a overthinker.

      oh totally. i think you have a great point! honestly, kudos to him for ending it when he knew he was no longer interested. seriously, that is a courtesy to all involved and it should be done more. FWIW, Jess and I just thought it was a hilarious little moment. and we love to dig deep into a joke to really flesh it out, but definitely didnt mean it to come across as though this guy did something so wrong - just something so hilarious :)

    Also, I'd pull my money from that bank - and when they ask you why you closed your account, tell them you had a bad experience with that particular guy, who then called and borderline harassed you instead of apologizing. It's 2024, for goodness's sake - there's no room for that anywhere!

    I like the jokes and fun banter but it seems like Caroline was touching on a serious issue of not getting warm affection when she was younger and not knowing how to show it which could have been an interesting deep dive instead it was made into a joke which was a funny joke but I think this is why it's hard for people to share deeper things. We tend to keep things superficial because we're afraid to go deep into somethings. Not sure if because the podcast is not meant to be deep or what, but felt like that was a missed moment. I'm sorry Caroline that you didn't receive warm affection when you were younger many people haven't. Myself included so it did resonate with me. I may be reading into something that's not there but just felt it was a missed moment.

    • @Not4EveryonePod
      @Not4EveryonePod  2 месяца назад +2

      you're a sweetheart and i appreciate this so much. The moment was missed a bit, but it is also soooo par for the course in podcasting I've found. it's this weird combination of private convo and entertainment for a crowd. so things do sometimes get lost. the good news IS that Jess is so heartfelt that I know it was an honest "podcasting" moment, and certainly i have left her in the same spot before. it makes all the difference to know you're with someone who does ultimately really care. AND at the same time, i love that you see me in this moment and that YOU really care. Love both you and Jess a lot in this moment. The platonic affection thing is really funny, and these are just anecdotes so obviously I could 100% be wrong but all of my friends who are really good at initiating physical affection with their friends of the same sex do seem to come from really affectionate families. A friend of mine, who is easily the best hugger I have ever met, lived with her brother while she was in college. I remember coming over to their place one day and actually feeling a little uncomfortable with how much they touched each other 😅 i was so not used to physical expressions of love that a 20 and 22 year old sister and brother fake wrestling for four seconds struck me as creepy. It wasn't, to be clear. I made it creepy. My first ex jock guy friend was always super physically affectionate with people and ready to hug or do a fist bump or pat on the back (If you've ever seen Chris Hemsworth to do an interview with other guys, imagine that), and it made so much sense when I met his parents because his dad is the only straight man I've ever met who I immediately wanted to hug the first time i ever saw him. Similar with his mom.Part of that is probably because they're Latino but it also because his dad is just a really short man, so I never feel threatened by him, and radiates affection in a way my own dad hasn't since i was maybe five

So if we were walking next to each other it could be 10 smacks in a row or something and I’m pretty sure we did this in public, whether it was shopping or out and about doing summer vacation things. No idea how we even thought to do that but it makes me giggle looking back on it. Maybe there were some subliminal pop culture things on tv at the time that inspired some kids to platonically slap bums 🤷‍♀️😄

IMO the best and most incisive way to send a message to him is to take yr business elsewhere with no fanfare, and minimal back & forth. If you allow him to draw u into a conflict somehow, you start from a disadvantage.
    Unfortunately, he would prob interpret yr very subversively classy idea to go see his show differently than you intend. These attitudes still persist in generational and cultural pockets the world over. Stinks, but often the best arrow in yr quiver is economic.

    I'm a lot like Caroline with the spooky stuff. On one hand I'm an atheist, I only believe in science, everything else is nonsense. On the other hand I couldn't watch stranger things because I was too scared to walk the dog after. Luckily I've almost never experienced anything supernatural-feeling, but I'm pretty sure that's because I avoid those situations like the plague. I don't get spooked often but that's probably because I live in an apartment building and have a dog that barks at any weird noise. When I was living alone in a farmhouse on the ground floor, I constantly had dreams about someone standing outside the window looking at me.

      that all would be so valid!! .... if she has pets. she has no pets, so it seems more confusing? It's sooo understandable if he had a bad experience with pets, or has sensory issues that he doesn't want to have pets around a lot. But the idea of not being able to date anyone who even KNOWS someone with pets...seems like it would eliminate everyone on earth potentially? I take your point that there is probably, definitely more to this story though. I do really want to know what it is! Hey guys! First of all, love the pod & you both I just wanted to highlight a way you can support the queer community. I've noticed you use the word "girlfriend" a lot when referring to female friendships. I fully get it, we heard our parents use it. However, it's actually harmful to queer women because when we use the term for our romantic partners, it's often misunderstood and we then have to continually come out. Not using it platonically allows us reclaim the word one day so that we have a word for our partners too
