To me Kelsey gets coach of the year over pope, and just about anybody else. He just had a much bigger job to do, and had to do more with less. Pope started with a top 5 recruiting and transfer class, he SUPPOSED to be contending right now. Kelsey however was written off from the beginning, no 5 stars , he never coached in high majors like pope, no top 20 anything coming in. Very low expectations, And he managed to build a legitimate contender in the ACC. Kelsey had a lot more ground to make up as the Louisville brand was down, Uk was already good, and brand was already up. I feel like I don’t get a clear sense of pope’s coaching ability. Of course YOU SHOULD BE WINNING WHEN GIVEN A GREAT HAND, LIKE POPE. Kelsey is winning when not given the best hand, and all his transfers, like Hepburn, Scott, smith, Hadley, are all over performing, way better than their previous schools. Smith leads the nation in 3s, Hepburn leads the ACC is steals and assists. That’s coaching, culture, and system. A complete program turn-around. Uk was not a complete turn-around, it was just a continuance.

Uk was a #3 seed last year so how is that rebuilding team ...ul was terrible for 3 years an PK turn it around in one year,and i have receipts so lets not for every year we hear about how bad the ACC is but come March Madness the last 3 years ACC conference has the most teams left in the Sweet 16 Elite 8 & Final Four 🤔
Yes we hated Memphis State/ Memphis as much as y'all hated us. Still do. That's the one thing I hated about going to the ACC is that Memphis game. Nothing in all of sports make me happier than beating Memphis State. There was a commercial that Denny Crum did for a local restaurant and his tag line, in the commercial, was "I haven't had this much fun since we beat Memphis State". BTW I went to the Mid-South Coliseum way back in the day for a Louisville-Memphis State game with my dad and that was enough for me. Two places I won't go back while wearing UofL gear. #1 is a West Virginia Football game in Morgantown and #2 is a Memphis basketball game in Memphis, Yes the hate is mutual. PLUD PAT HAS CONTROL of his players, Pope doesnt during uk uofL game popes players played dirty with 1 guy gouging in the eye and stomping in the stomach 2 cards players during a whistled dead ball that he provoked the benches to clear plus hes doing it without 3 of his bigs w out surgery pins put in his fingerss,1 out for the rest of the year tore his acl and a guard that had to have shoulder surgery plos 2 guys that red shirted at the beginning of the season to rehab their injuries they got before joining the team mot to mention a forward that missed a few games that just came back theres no comparison between pat and mark.... pats coach of the year mark is just a small step up from last years coach....
PK’s best argument is REDEMPTION. Louisville was literally one of the worst teams the last couple years. I’m not knocking Pope’s team though. I’m a Louisville alumnus, but I’ll admit, UK is a good team. And they were good when Cal left. PK launching UofL from complete disarray should be considered when determining COTY. Because that’s one of the duties a coach holds.
UK fan, but I want UL to be good as it means more when we beat them. It’s much better when both teams are rising high. It doesn’t hurt that each time they win the victory gets better.

@Mr3Priorityz 46 yr old life long resident here, and to me, Cincy and Memphis were always the bigger rival. They were in our conference, we played them twice a year, and the games always seemed to mean more. The Kentucky game was just bragging rights between you and your friends and that's were it ended. Maybe it's because it's been a lopsided rivalry but I was always madder when we lost to Cincy or Memphis State then I ever was when losing to Kentucky. I also know several fans my age and older that feel the same.
