I took a commission for making a portrait of Lisa for a birthday gift, the reference picture is beautiful, but it was not so easy to make it into embroidery.
In this video I showed my working progress from start to finished.
I was not satisfied with my first drawing, and I had to draw it again. I used only horizontal stitches for the face area, and spend a lot of time for the eyes. The clothes and the flowers part were fun, not so much for the hair...
Finally added some eyelashes using silk thread, because the cotton thread is too thick.
It’s challenging but I’m happy with the result. I hope you guys like it. 😊
Stitches used: Needle Painting, random stitch
Fabric: Thin canvas
Thread: DMC Embroidery Floss 1 strand, silk thread

I just was wondering what you would recommend a beginner should do to eventually be able to do embroidery portraits
Are there any resources you would recommend?
You should learn color pencil drawing first, to understand the colors and pencil strokes, it’s the same as thread painting, just much faster

Depends, I usually mix lots of colors. All those light pink and beige

Thanks, it’s better to use embroidery threads, there are much more colors in those.

This is absolutely incredible!! Why did you use the silk thread for the eyelashes?
Thanks. I tried with the cotton thread but it’s too thick, doesn’t look like eyelashes, silk threads can be split to very thin, looks more realistic.

I loved it, could you tell me how you made the drawing? is there any technique?
I usually do free hand drawing, no special technique, just lots of practice. But you can also trance pattern for embroidery.

Thank you. I normally use canvas or linen, something thick and smooth. Thread DMC no.25, and needle no.9 or 10

Once again I'm in ore at your talent. Not just with your embroidery work but also with the drawings you do first. You would make a lot of money if you did classes showing how to do this craft. Well not really a craft it's a art. Could you please tell me what color you use for the skin tone on faces. I'm about to do one and no idea what DMC color or shade to use. And my craft store are totally useless and don't even know what thread wax is.
Thanks, it’s actually a lot more complicated than it looks, I mixed some light pink and lots of different shades of beige to make the skin tone. I have online classes on Patreon, teaching the color shading technique. Not as difficult as portrait but some complicated patterns too.

The easy way would be transfer the pattern using carbon paper, or put a light box under the cloth.

Hi, I left the teeth blank, only use pencil to add some color. The white part of the eyes is not really white, I used a light grey 168.
