Hello ma'am! May question lang po regarding statistical treatment for ordinal data (question no. 3 in SOP). Based on my research, these type of questions are likert type or ordinal and according to what I've read, it is inappropriate to use mean to measure central tendency in ordinal data. The best method to use daw po is mode or median. What are your thoughts regarding this? And also po sa question no. 4 sa SOP. How can I know if the relationship is linear? Since pearson R is used for linear relationship with continuous variables. Thank you!
Hi, if I may answer your question as an Applied Statistics graduate, I will say that you're correct. Mean is innapropriate for ordinal data as well as Pearson R theoretically and measure-level wise. If we assume ordinal-level data to behave as interval-level data, then ponder that wrong assumptions typically lead to wrong conclusion. For ordinal data like Likert scale and ratings, we should use median along with interquartile range (IQR) as descriptive stats and Spearman rho for correlation instead. Actually, median is the strongest or most robust measure of central tendency (MCT). Even with interval-level data, we should use the median as MCT if they are skewed either to the left or to the right. Mean, SD, and Pearson R are sensitive to presence of outliers which might result to innacurate findings. However, we cannot blame them if they're using mean and Pearson R because nonparametric inference and its rationale are not actually being taught to non-statistics major.
