  • Mullah bhai Jeevanji made a great fortune by bringing Indian labourers for the railway construction from Mombasa to Uganda. This video is about him.

    Hi as a Kenyan I find the topic offensive. How can 70% of Nairobi belong to an Indian and not the Kenyans? Please educate me. I stand corrected.

      Thanks for writing. I'm sorry if you felt in that way.
      The construction of the railway proved hugely profitable for Jevanjee and his company in Mombasa. He now established a commercial empire across the Indian Ocean, including two steamships between Mauritius and Bombay and between Bombay and Jeddah.[7] He was lauded in the European press as a "real asset to a young country", who spoke English with "quite a good accent" and whose methods were "approximating more to the European, than the Asiatic type.[8] He soon ventured into other business interests in the region. By 1900 it was estimated he was worth approximately four million pounds sterling.[9] His firm undertook contracts to build various government offices, railway stations and post offices all along the railway. He further played a large role in the growth of Nairobi, supplying much capital to develop the town's infrastructure. It was estimated that at the turn of the century, he was the leading property owner in both Nairobi and Mombasa, owning the greater part of the former and half of the latter.[10]

      It says on Wikipedia, that he owned half of the property in Mombasa and even greater in Nairobi. I have only estimated. Since it is saying great than half then it has to be around 70 percent of the total property of Nairobi. But again it was by the turn of the century when Nairobi was not spread this big, that you find now.

      Jevanjee owned most of the city in 1900s. Most of the CBD original title is in his name. Europeans didnt like the city center.

    You are lying. Indians do not own that much in Nairobi. Nairobi metro area is home to 9 million people. 99% are black. Nairobi has a diverse population from ordinary Kenyans, Somalis, South Sudanese etc. all of whom do business in Nairobi and some ofthem own properties. Kenya has a population of 55 million people. And Indians in Kenya are less than 100,000! Basically, Nairobi and Kenya in general is a country for blacks by blacks.You can walk all day and not spot even a single white man or a even a single Indian. However, Chinese have vested interests in investments in Kenya lately because they are constructing a 27 km elevated expressway and have recently constructed some of the tallest structures in Nairobi.

      @@SinghRoadwayS Alright. My bad. I read the title and jumped into conclusions. As a Kenay living in Nairobi for nearly a decade now, I have noticed that Indians live only in an estate known as Parklands. In the past, they used to live past parklands into some neighbouring estates known as Ngara, Eastleigh etc. Most of them do business, and some of them own factories in an area known as Industrial Area. Some of the richest people in Kenya are Indians but that distorts the picture because Indians in Kenya were even wealthier and had immense influence in the past, say like 1970s, 80s, and 1990s. The problem that made Indians not to extend their sphere of influence in Kenya and East Africa in general is that they do not take part in the social and political development of a country. For example, not a single Indian is a member of parliament in Kenya. All politicians are blacks. It means that Indians do not take part in policy making and are subject to the decisions that Africans make. As Kenyan economy has been developing rapidly at a growth rate of 6% year on year since 2002, Indians in Kenya have started to want to be integrated and accepted as Kenyans. Many of them have started to advocate for inclusion and integration into the vast Kenyan society, but it is a bit too late, because in the past, they never wanted to be labelled as Kenyans. So the swift change in their mindset is because of a realization that unless they play an active role in socio-economic- and political development of Kenya, they are going to be left behind. This is specifically the case because more Kenyans are getting educated and they are getting into influential professions like engineering, medicine, law etc. in contrast, Indians in Kenya used to send (and some still do) their children abroad to study, so the children of Indians once they come back, they could not get into these professions in Kenya. So most Indian children stayed overseas as lost sheeps because they were confused of their nationality and allegiance. Chinese have came in strong over the past decade through infrastructural development in Kenya, including funding the construction of Nairobi-Mombasa railway (one of the best in Africa currently), Thika Road superhighway in Nairobi, Nairobi Expressway, and GTC towers complex in Nairobi.

    • @SinghRoadwayS
      @SinghRoadwayS  2 года назад +2

      You are right, Indians did not take part in any political system but they have contributed in social development, you can read about the guy who owns Mombasa cement. He does a lot of charity. It is indian mindset to send their kids to the west to get educated. Even rich Indians living in India do that. That's colonial inferior mindset.

    • @ksgrmdsdl2383
      @ksgrmdsdl2383 2 года назад

      @@SinghRoadwayS I agree on that. I will give it to you on some contribution to charity by some kind hearted Indians in Kenya. But it is on isolated cases, where an Indian may want to prop up the image of his business through CSR. It is not to the level that you can see from Kenyan-based charity organizations like USAID, UKAID, JICA (Japan International Corporation Agency) etc. that trully impact the lives of ordinary but impoverished or vulnerable Kenyans through healthcare and education funding. So the view in every Kenyan mind is that Indians in Kenya are stingy and only want to maintain employee-employer relationship. You can find various articles online highlighting the fact that Kenyans are unhappy working at Indian-owned busineses and factories because they are mistreated and paid peanuts.

    • @SinghRoadwayS
      @SinghRoadwayS  2 года назад +1

      That's Indian way, indians want to pay peanuts even in India. Indian firms stresses a lot on cost cutting.
