Incredible country! Those damn fires - I wish you the best luck with them. But heat sounds like something else. Keep up those electrolytes and be careful!
Yeah, these heatwaves going on around the country these past weeks are brutal and I can’t imagine anyone walking out there! Take it easy and keep hydrated, hope you figured out your walking and break schedule.
Lucky me 😂. I remember extreme heat waves nationwide year of my AT thru hike - that was a brutal year too. I think the only year our grass turned burnt brown. Hopefully this heat wave breaks soon.
Ya Burns are pain to walk on. On my Hunting property we got a lot of timber so we do controlled burns after they clear out the Pines. But walking across that stuff is pain on the ankles.
On the PCY it looks like very little if any controlled burns are done. Locals have told me they aren’t. Very depressing areas to walk through - feel like I’m walking through one big ashtray.
Dang, does it ever rain out there? Them burn areas look like hell, sad to see all them big pines standing there dead. Hope the weather gives you a break soon, we've been HOT and dry here for a month or so. Carry on buddy and safe travels.
Not nearly enough! I had a little rain my very first night and nothing since then. Very sad walking through these burn areas. Even the lush pine forest the forest floor has so much fallen debris it’s easy to imagine how quickly a fire would start.
I got my first hitch at Newfound Gap into Gatlinburg. I felt bad b/c I smelled like straight up hiker trash and was soaked from the rain and this guy had a nice sports car. I was so thankful though. Is it really hot in your tent when you try to sleep? I never sleep well when its super hot like that. If it weren't for the flies I bet the tarp would be nice.
Oh man rain + sweat = nasty smelling 🤣. Poor guy! A few nights nighttime lows were low - mid 80’s…not horrible in low humidity but not comfortable either. I’m glad I have the tent for good bug protection but if it wasn’t for that a tarp for this trail would probably be better. The small footprint has been key - I can setup where most can’t which gives me more options - so many folks have large footprint tents which are more limiting for this trail.
Dang. NorCal. I’ve hiked in hot wx but don’t recall any temps above 90. The fires have really spanked this section since I went thru in 2015. Hope the pretty Marble Mtn wilderness opens up for you 🤞
It’s so hot! Several days now over 100 - 106 is hottest I’ve hiked in lately. Hoping its cools back to 80’s or even 90’s. The burn zones have been pretty bad to hike through - both heat and terrain.
@@BearTrekAdventures Best to hike pre-twilight to "heat passes" not unlike the Sierra passes -- which equates to 'afternoon siestas' -- instinctual for those us raised in 'remote' nature. Survival skill instilled in me: breathe with mouth closed at all times especially during strenuous walking.

Thanks Seth! I’m doing 4-6 electrolyte drink mixes a day. Water just doesn’t come close to being sufficient.

Yes, its Dixie fire burn over 900,000 acres, in 2021.
Wow I didn’t realize the magnitude 😱
