    Notes from what he said, I hope this helps you guys out 😊, also I would like to say thank you for sharing this advice, it would really help me get ahead for coursework during lockdown!
    *Before You start Writing Coursework Phase 1*
    - Engage with the content (better if you enjoy it), and understand what is actually going on and being said
    - Get ahead so read upon what will be talked about (Context)
    - Find sources to add to your knowledge, 10 contemporary & 10 secondary sources as a **baseline**
    - Contemporary sources main point or argument,
    Make not what you're going to add
    How will I interpret it? How to add to sources, how does it link to your argument? ,
    - How the knowledge of the source fit relevance to what you're trying to actually answer?
    - Think of the context , (Timeline?)
    - Write Practice Essays
    - The feedback will be crucial for coursework, e.g you haven't done evaluation (So you know to make that your main point)
    *Writing Essay Phase 2*
    - The Issue- Main argument (Your question)
    - Create a table, what paragraph ideas, you want to do, , write a summary on this , where will you put this in?, how will that source contribute to the paragraph?
    - Draw up a detailed plan ], put in a document
    - Do you conclusion next, as it makes you keep a consistent line (You will go back later), so you know what your judgment is, and keep on track with the question in mind
    - Then Intro, set your argument out, and what your arguing against, may want to include a source if you want to
    - May want to add why your argument is superior
    - Start Referencing, sources etc, (Cite This For Me, good site to know how to do it)
    - Find more sources, when you know your main plan, find sources to counter your argument
    - Has some validity, but falls down because of this... (As in the counter argument)
    - Then write main paragraphs (3-5) need to include 1 primary 1 contemporary source, 2-4 sources per paragraph
    - Main paragraphs use own knowledge all the time
    - Decide where you're going to use your sources
    "After first draft Phase 3*
    - Leave it for a bit, then read it again have a fresh thought
    - Get teacher to read it
    - Then rewrite it
    - After first Draft, highlight them, get each AO and be critical with yourself, where have you used knowledge, evaluation, analysis etc
    - Then use the essays you did before, and see how you have improved on a certain point
    - Once done go over it, get someone to read over (We can send each other, or get your sister to read it)
    - E.g if you used a word like However to often, etc (Manchester Phrase Bank useful for this)
    - [www.phrasebank.manchester.ac.uk/](www.phrasebank.manchester.ac.uk/)
    - Work around 2 hours a night (In Frees?)

    Being off school I’m really struggling with how to start my coursework 😩 the question we’re doing is how important was Martin Luther King in the pursuit of black civil rights in America (1865-1984)? How would you recommend that I structure my answer as in thematically, chronologically etc? Also how should I go about finding sources and historians to put into my answer? Thank you, this video was so helpful!!

    • @thatonecharlie
      @thatonecharlie  4 года назад +3

      Personally I don't know enough about this topic to give you a good idea. Especially as it depends on what you are writing about. However, I'd say 9/10 thematically is the best way to go. Maybe talking about the different themes/pursuits that MLK attempted. Alternatively, (although, i'm not sure on the constraints of your essay) you could bring in other black civil rights figures like Malcom X and weigh up if MLK was more important than other figures. But then again I would probably still suggest that you try and create criteria/themes with which to assess how important MLK was in his pursuit. For finding sources, books are your friends - especially for more contemporary issues like civil rights. To find books just type in key words to google scholar. In books look for references that historians use to primary sources and they provide a good place to look for other historians viewpoints. But DO NOT copy and paste as that counts as plagiarism - and you may get disqualified. Also, for any sources you do use - make sure you create a log of where you found the source - e.g. book, journal etc (page numbers are also really helpful too! for looking back and also citing). There are also catlogues online for primary sources - may be worth trying to google the civil rights movement and see what articles you could find. Maybe try look for articles published at the time on the matter! Sorry for not being more specific but I really don't know much about the question, but I hope this gives you some guidance. If you need anything more specific just lemme know :)

Do you reckon I could do approx. 2000 word (so like 4 pages) with no knowledge on the subject before in only 15 days? We're doing it on whether Stalinism is merely a continuation of Tsarism in Russia...I just don't know where to begin and reading a lot isn't really convenient at this time. I'm really stressing and this ain't doing my anxiety any good ahaha also, I don't know how to structure the essay, like whether I should divide those 2000 words into political, economic and social or another category?!

    • @thatonecharlie
      @thatonecharlie  5 лет назад

      That's a really intresting topic, I actually studied Russian History from Tsar Alexander II to Krushchev! I think if you put the work in you could definitely write the 2000 words. A thematic choice like Social, Political and Economic sounds like a really good start to structure the essay, and I'm sure you could draw lots of differences and continuations from it. If I were you I would start by drawing up on a sheet those 3 headings and then sub divide each one into continuation and differences. Then structure your research around that. From there use each one as a paragraph to write about using the structure I mentioned in the video. I hope this can help you start :)

    Hi so I’ve chosen to do a question on the 1951-64 Conservative electoral dominance and whilst I’ve bought/borrowed books by about 6 historians on this period, I don’t know where to start with getting clear sources from these, as that’s going to be a LOT of reading to extract the perfect sources from these to support/counter my arguments. Any advice on how to best find your secondary sources?

    • @thatonecharlie
      @thatonecharlie  4 года назад

      Secondary sources can definitely be difficult to find, but it does require you to do some reading! Even skimming will do. You may find that certain arguments keep popping up - they'll probably be the ones you want to look into! Although, you can normally filter what you're reading by chapter. An easier way to do it is by going online and using something like google scholar and typing in the keywords you are looking for and you'll likely find some useful arguments. Researching can definitely be tedious but also really interesting - especially when you find arguments and their counter arguments!!

    • @thatonecharlie
      @thatonecharlie  4 года назад

      I guess your teacher is trying to get you to fully understand the content of the course. I would probably plan it by taking factors/themes and trying to fit content into themes or factors and trying to form an arguement. State your arguement in your introuduction and create a paragraph assessing each theme/factor as if it were your actual coursework. Then your conclusion should almost reiterate the judgement/arguement that was set out in your introduction. Use evidence from the course content and i'm sure that will work as a good basis to add sources and historiography :) Hope this helps

      I think the hardest part is just starting. You can always just try and set a timer for 10 minutes where you just have to write. As you start (just writing anything) ideas will follow, and then after that time you can pick out some of those ideas. Just make that start! Even if everything you write needs to be re-written, just writing produes those ideas and will hopefully give you some direction :)

      @thatonecharlie  4 года назад +2

      To remember dates I would use something like quizlet or some flash cards and just constantly go over them until you feel comfortable that you can remember them all :)

    Do you need to read any books?

      Reading books will always help. But if you are short on time, just skim through chapters that seem relevant. Or search books through google scholar/google books

    What’s the difference between sources and a historian ?

    • @thatonecharlie
      @thatonecharlie  5 лет назад +4

      A historian will write information which can then become a source. This is usually called a secondary source. Whereas a primary source is an original document like a manuscript that was created at the time. Hope this helps :)
