One reason why you may want to add or subtract a frequency is if it's being used to monitor the frequency of a local oscillator in a superhet. If you have high-side injection, then subtract the IF frequency or for low-side injection add the IF frequency to get the tuned frequency.

      That makes sense, thanks.

The adding or subtracting frequencies comes in handy when using it as a display for an analog radio, add or subtract the intermediate frequency which is usually 455Kc. I use the cheap LCD freq modules for that also.

      Good info. Thanks!

@@uni-byte had to update as spell check changed my intermediate to intermittent 🙃

That’s a snazzy tune. Would make a nice theme song for the channel.

I do have make an intro and outro and I agree this is great music for it. However, this music YT makes available for free can be pulled by it's copyright holder at any time. While you can still leave it anything that was created before the change, but it will likely be restricted going forward. Then I'd have to change my theme. I have to find something more permanent.

Try adding some red electrical tape over the 7 segment display. It may sound crazy, it enhances the contrast of the digits. I use a roll of 3M brand red tape. YMMV.

I'll give it a shot. I sometimes use a layer or two of polymide tape.

I have this kit and it does come in handy. I like working on 8 bit computers and sometimes the crystal do fail. It's an easy way of testing them. I always use it to check crystals before I use them in a project or kit. I've been sold mislabeled crystals and IC's before.

Agreed, from another 8-bit computer fan.

This module was intended originally to be used in ham radio equipment. There it would add/substract IF form the crystal to get the tunning frequency (or something like that, not quite sure). Anyway, for use as frequency meter or crystal tester you not need those functions. I bought two red kits and on one, I found that intermitently it did not powered up. After troubleshooting, I blamed the crystal and changed it; it was the culprit. However, the original crystal that came with the kit, tested ok with 20MHz but sometimes failed. My units did not test crystals of low values (4.433M, 32k) but what it test is ok (maybe I try to make a separate oscillator for testing low value crystals?). The crystal used must be adjusted at 20MHz for the module to be accurate, I tested it with crystals of 10, 16, 24MHz and it worked but gave wrong readings. I plan to use one module as an indicator for my signal generator because I found that it can measure lower frequencies (that means that the crystal oscillator is not oscillating with low values crystals)
You got luky to get a manual with your kit.

The manual I got with the kit was of limited use, but yeah, it was there which is on the bright side for these sorts of things.

Built this a few months ago, and sort of got side tracked with other things. Might have to play with it soon.
