  • Well well, instructions would have been helpful. After watching someone else's video it turn out the button accesses a menu on 'Long' press and you can measure a crystal directly using the pins I left underpopulated.
    You can pick one up here -
    amzn.to/2H5ez0a (UK)
    amzn.to/2Hhl0AK (US)
    Ebay bit.ly/2snZGma
    AliExpress s.click.aliexpr...
    It turns out that 'Likes' and 'Shares' actually help the channel so, if you want to, please click the thumbs up or share the video.
    I don't have a Patreon or a donate thingy, I get by fine. That said, if you are mega rich and fancy donating something I would find useful then feel free to check out my Amazon wishlist (No pressure) - www.amazon.co.u...

    Love the Lazy Sunday kit builds, could sit for hours with a brew watching them.

    I built one of those last year. Fun little kit. Thanks.

    The spare 22pF capacitor does have a purpose. It should be connected in parallel with one of the two 22pF capacitors near the 9018 transistor to enable measuring lower frequency crystals in the 3 pin female connector you've not installed.

    Buy a rework handle :-) you can pick up an 858D (which is much the same as mine) for £20. Cheers for watching - I enjoyed your build.

    We call the variable capacitor a "trimmer capacitor", or just trimmer. Love the vids! Thanks!!

    Multicore solder is brilliant - thanks for the tip 😉 looking forward to the led build video.

      I kinda hope the LED matrix video is a little way off. I recorded a test yesterday and it was... well quite difficult.

    You can probably just put one of those antistatic bags that you must likely have everywhere on the LED display to make it read well on camera. Though adjusting the exposure worked fine.

    After the 20 Binary Clock kits are sold, perhaps you could publish the design files (Circuit, Gerbers, BOM) online? Then anyone could make one.

    • @DavidWatts
      @DavidWatts  6 лет назад +3

      It will all be going up at the same time Steve, all people will be paying for is parts and postage. The schematic, board layout, bill of materials and original Eagle files will be free forever to everyone and I would highly encourage people to make their own. The kit will likely be around £10, hopefully less but I know that kind of cost isn't for everyone. It can be cheaper to source/salvage the components so I would love to see other people make something based off the design.

    On your LED 18A issue, could you not multiplex at a high refresh rate so only one LED is ever on at any given time but fast enough to the human eye to appear that all are on?

    Slow cookers rule. I love mine to bits.
    I use cheapy .7mm mutlicore, (60/40 leaded) think it was $4.50 for a few hundred grams, the flux is just right - on clean boards. I brought myself up as a kid on the cheap tubes of solder that you find in a quid shop or a market. Solder is solder to me, prep and finding the tip that suits you and the job in hand is more important imo.

    Is there any chance to get the program code for this frequency counter, so that I can upload it myself into the pic IC????

    I've just realised why you have so much trouble holding PCBs and soldering components, then you try to solve it with BluTac and PCB holders, etc.. Straight up first thing at 2:58 you start by installing the capacitors.... No, no, that is WRONG. You should ONLY install the diodes, and solder those. Then ONLY the 1/8W or 1/4W resistors, and solder those. Don't use that silly stand thingy - just flip the PCB and use the flat desk/mat surface to hold the components in position! Then install the next tallest, etc. Look how at 44:36 you are attempting to install the IC holder - that should have been put in before almost every other component! So, your assembly method is all arse-about, and simply by changing that process you can make your own life so much easier!

    I tried mine today. Tried to measure the 32khz crystal on a laptop mb. Stays at zero. I connected to IN and G. My scope reads the signal as 32khz. What could i be doing wrong? Kit was from ali.

      I can't for the life of me find the document, but someone sent me one that detailed a mod/extra component you need to add to read lower values. Have a look back in the comments, I am sure it is there. If I find it I will get back to you.

    This frequency meter will only work well using a signal conditioning amplifier. There is a Russian video on RUclips: ruclips.net/video/RT71uZ3SB9w/видео.html

    Solder? Stannol Sn62Pb36Ag2 0.5mm, 2.5% flux 3-core F-SW26. It's really effective, but the flux needs to be washed off.

    • @DavidWatts
      @DavidWatts  6 лет назад +1

      I had a look at Stannol, lots of folks on the EEVBlog forum recommend it. The MG stuff was cheaper per 500g so I went for that.
