    2 litre pop bottles. Cut off the top section. Drill holes in the bottom. Sink into end of raise bed to try and maintain heat and moisture. Last year I did half "Starts" from the garden centre which went down about 2 inch the stretched out. The other half where 2 seeds in each bottle, did mean to remove the weakest seedling but never got round to it. Ended up with 2 perfect carrots in each bottle. I have 36 bottles so this year I am planting 2 seeds in each bottle again but doing 4 bottles each weekend so hopefully I will get 9 weeks worth of carrots...

      I'm trying a slight different way but similar, I got a pint plastic cup cut the bottom off. And then filled with soil

      Sounds like a good technique.
      Did you find the compost in the bottles dried out quickly or was it easy to keep on top of?👍🌱👍

      @@marksallotmentplot Very easy. I do struggle getting in to the rhythm of regular watering and a couple of health issues did cause a couple of spells where I didn't get out watering. Think digging a trench so the bottom half of the bottles where buried helped to regulate the temperature. Other option was it was luck as the first year of doing them like this so ask again after this years harvest :)

    There's the wind that can being carrot root fly into your carrot bed but also I would assume carrot root flies can also walk once they are close to the bed. I bet they can easily walk up two feet of raised bed and get in to where the carrots are.

    I have started broadcasting seeds the same way you get more produce and coverage stops a lot of weeds definitely works.

      Must admit first time I tried it I was a little sceptical and thought it'll never work.
      Pleased to say I was wrong and think the broadcast method is deffo the way forward!👍🌱👍

    I’m planning on this, just getting my bed set up so perfect timing. Would I be able to use coir or do you suggest compost? Is there a difference btn the type of sand too? Thanks Mark 🎉

    • @marksallotmentplot
      @marksallotmentplot  5 месяцев назад

      Hi Vanessa, I'd avoid coir for carrots tbh.
      Any decent peat free compost should do the trick but I'd deffo recommend you sieve or mill it before it goes in the bed. There's so many lumps and bumps in compost these days that will cause problems with carrots growing straight.
      On the sand front sharp sand is the go to for mixing in with compost 👍🌱👍. Most places like B&M or a B&Q will sell it pretty cheaply.

    I found insect net bags with a draw string that fit over 30L buckets, buying 20 worked out at £3 each, took a bit of ebay mining to find them at that price but they are on there, via the slow boat. I do maincrop after the first earlies come out of the tubs, worked a charm last yr.
