- 🎙️ Introducing After Dark - our relaxed, conversational podcast series, hosted by Steve and Pauline Richards and James P Dowling. It’s a space where we tackle all the topics relating to Psycho-Systems Analysis - including Jung, complexes, instincts, and the personal myth - but in a much more relaxed, conversational style - that is, 'After Dark'...
Intro/Outro created by Gareth Richards
Jung To Live By, presented by the Institute for Psycho-Systems Analysis, is creating videos and podcasts on Jungian-based Depth Psychology for personal development, study, and clinical practice.
Psycho-Systems Analysis, founded by Steve and Pauline Richards in 1988, is the New Paradigm, 21st-century evolution of Psychotherapy and Clinical Psychophysiology. As the original and ground-breaking fusion of Scientific Systems-Based Medical Holism with Jungian-based Depth Psychology, Respiratory Psychophysiology, and Hypnotherapy, it offers a dynamic, non-'psycho-reductive' approach to psychotherapy. Crafted to address real-world challenges, not abstract theory, the model stands firmly aligned with the emerging frontier of Neuropsychoanalysis.

Really excited for this new reboot!
Thank you very much @stevil1974! That's super kind of you to say! All the best, James
Super excited for the new series! Seeing this makes me reflect upon the last few years. There’s always been a magic about your guys’ videos. Thank you for the upload.
@kacpergarbiec4174! Thank you very much for your very kind comment, it's deeply appreciated - hope to speak with you again soon! All the best, James
I'm feeling very happy! I feel like celebrating, as it's also been 5 years since I've starterd watching the channel (basically followed James from his uberboyo days to JTLB). He truly inspires me, and I have also gone through a lot of changes since I found this channel. I can definitely say now that the JTLB team - Steve, Pauline, and James - now hold a special place in my heart. Excited for what's ahead ☺️. Thank you for everything you do 🙏
@mark.norona0818, your words have touched me very deeply - thank you ever so much for leaving this comment. Your ongoing engagement with the channel in such a deep way means that we are definitely part of the same 'field', and I genuinely mean that my friend. We'll honour your sentiment as best as we possibly can 🙏 - All the very best, James
Cool, I can't wait to see more. I have a feeling this would be best enjoyed on the big screen at home, after dark ofcorse!
That's a very kind sentiment to share @Ancestrally-Guided, thank you - we really hope you enjoy the series! All the best, James
Will definitely be tuning in.
Thank you so much @luqkuh! That means a lot to us. All the best, James
Cannot wait to see what emerges 'after-dark' with you guys and everybody else coming onboard. Very excited too see the rebooted version of JTLB 🙏
Thank you as always @tuwheratiaihaka2744! The dedication you always bring to engagement with the channel is deeply appreciated, and it's been a privilege to watch your journey unfold 🙏🙏 All the best, James
Super excited for this! I loved the old form of videos back in 2020 and the "ask a depth psychologist" questions that came up.
Hi @chowchebi, you've been with us since the very beginning, and it's wonderful to hear your thoughts and impressions! Your sentiment is very kind, and we really appreciate the consistent dedication you bring to your engagement with the channel. Thanks again! All the best, James
This is great! A good move. Also what James has been doing with the main content is extremely soothing and I LOVE IT! Great work to all of you. You are ace high!
Hi @savoirfaire6181, thank you for another very kind comment 🙏 Your feedback is invaluable to us, and your comment regarding our main content is truly humbling to receive - thank you. All the best, James
Always good to see my friends from across the pond.
Would love to hear more about James' experience over the last 5 years---2023 was a tough year for me, having endured a 3rd psychosis within a few year span. Needless to say, some of what I experienced (particularly with electricity/electronics like yourself), was nothing short of profound and terrifying back in 2023. You were all patient and kind to me during that period, so thank you again.
My life has shifted to a much more mundane routine, which is a very welcome change. Back in university part-time, getting closer and closer to graduation. Onward and upward 🚀
Hi @rus7578, your comment has genuinely left me deeply humbled - thank you ever so much for sharing this with us. Your determination and authenticity very clearly shine through your words, despite the deep challenges you've faced: I'm sure your future will be exceedingly bright - your strong spirit will secure this for you 🙏 All the very best, and take care - James
Oh, so nice to see you three again. It does feel like a reboot for sure. Let’s see where it takes us, I’m staying 🙂

Exciting! Looking forward to this
Thank you @juicebox2780 for your very kind comment! It's really appreciated - all the best, James
Thanks for this. You know at the end of the video I was a little surprised that there was no big theme concept or anything for the video it really was just a short form conversation between you three and to be honest I really appreciated it. Just fundamental basic relating but at the same time there is a lesson there you could say that there doesn't have to be a big message or any particular message at all. Steve told once a story of a camera crew who hiked up a mountain to see a taoist-master in his meditation spot and they asked him what he found up there for him to respond, "nothing, because there is nothing here." I don't know I could say any number of things but I think I'll leave it at that. It's not nihilism in that negative sense too I will say because it's still important to relate positively and to be living the life in the process, but there's so much rush and hurry and sometimes it's just underappreciated to just have a cup of coffee (or tea if that's your fancy) and just sit back and have a chat. I'll have to add this show, After Dark, to my watchlist as well. Anyways I wish the best! Take care.
By the way just in case it wasn't clear in that I enjoyed this. I'm looking forward to this new series!
Hi @scottygarner4670, thank you for your very thoughtful comment, and for your continued amazing engagement with the channel - it's always deeply appreciated. You've hit on something important there: in fact, I believe we discuss essentially exactly this, in an After Dark episode we'll release soon. Steve and Pauline have always said that 'relating is the key', and an essential part of this is living 'life', rather than being caught-up in abstractions. There's essential value to abstractions when working through them (we need to work through ideas as part of the process), but if not 'integrated' properly, they remain detached from the real world. Perhaps this is the sentiment you're working through, in your comment? That the whole point of ideas and theory 'should' be to serve real life, and not vice versa. Just a thought. Thanks again Scotty! All the best, James
Very excited for this! Thank you for all your hard work. You three have made a profound impact on my life over the past five years of watching your videos.
Hi @joerodriguez8977, that's a very kind comment to leave us, thank you very much - it's genuinely deeply humbling, and we'll continue as best as we possibly can to honour your sentiment. Thank you. All the best, James
Looking forward to this. ❤
Thank you for sharing this very kind sentiment @Angel-ih4wo - really appreciated! All the best, James
This sounds fantastic 😍❤❤❤!
Thanks again @Spectre2434! Your sentiment is really appreciated 🙏 All the best, James
Thought I would share, that I've always been drawn to your episodes where you have conversations. I've found my style of learning is more abstract and I retain more through pondering of conversation as opposed to the specifics of some of your more in depth academic videos. For context I have a long history of hypnosis training and currently recognize and use the elements of hypnosis with EMDR & IFS. I often will listen to a conversation amd it will help give me a new creative way to connect or understand my client's more - and in so, help support their therapeutic journey. Thank you so much for what you do.
Hi @robinhoodtherapy, that's a very kind comment, and we deeply value your feedback. The 'Resolve' series (as our bigger, denser video series) is still ongoing, but we felt that introducing this new element alongside it was important, and it's great to hear that you echo that sentiment. Thanks again, and wishing you all the best for your clinical work - James
I'm loving it! I always enjoy your videos !
Thank you @Spectre2434, that's very humbling feedback to receive, genuinely - deeply appreciated. Wishing you all the best! James
So glad you guys are coming back to youtube!
Hi @EZ-PZ-ish, thank you so much for your kind words. We technically never left RUclips 😇 The big Resolve series episodes all took around 200 hours each to make, hence the gap in uploads. But we're very excited to be back far more regularly. Thanks so much for your support! All the best, James
Very excited for this; your videos are a like a treasure trove!
Hi @valor43, thank you very much for your kind comment, and for your support of the channel these past 5 years - it's really appreciated by us all! All the best, James
Fantastic to see this going live guys! It's a great idea and I'm excited to see the upcoming videos. And absolutely agree about the magic of the early videos, they were a beacon of light in an otherwise tumultuous era of the pandemic.
Hi @Yacobo_, thank you for another kind, heartfelt comment - your engagement is always very deeply appreciated my friend 🙏 All the best, James
Looking forward to the discussions and seeing more of you guys, cheers.
Thank you @-Altera-! That's super kind of you to say. All the best, James
I was just thinking about you guys, and the after dark sign on your last big video and here you are on my feed. Many blessings 🙏
I have been thinking recently how fantastic of a conversation it would be between the three of you and Bernardo Kastrup, discussing your model of informational monism and his model of analytical idealism. Please try and make this happen. 😃
Thanks so much for your kind comments @121withtom3! That sounds like a great idea - it would be wonderful to speak with him. All the best, James
Looking forward to these. Thank you.
Thanks so much @ernestberry5226, as always, for your very kind comments - they're always appreciated by us all. All the best, James
So exciting!
Thanks @Quiex13; glad to have you along for the ride! All the best, James
This sounds super cool. I felt a sense of joy after James mentioned returning to the original“magic“ of the channel. Very much looking forward to this. Will it be on this channel or another one?
Hi @Navioli, thanks so much for your kind comment - After Dark will be on this channel; the original plan was for it to be it's own channel, but we thought we'd keep everything streamlined. Thanks again! All the best, James
Exciting!Can't wait!
Thank you @adnanmaruf4734! That's super kind of you to say! All the best, James
Can’t wait! 🙏🏻
Thanks so much @sven8880! 🙏 Really appreciate your kind comment, and you being a part of our core community! All the best, James
I'm personally very interested to see what kind of chats will come of this new series, I still need to catch up on most of the dialectics and some seminars as well as finish the Personal Myth book which I'm thoroughly enjoying. Thank you. I appreciate all the videos.
Hi @kronamcsg, your engagement with Steve and Pauline's work is clearly nothing short of stunning! Thank you very much for your very kind comment, and we really hope you enjoy the upcoming series! All the best, James
I'm looking forward to this!!

Thank you🙏
Thank you for your kind comment @dawittesfaye9704 , it's really appreciated 🙏 All the best, James
Idk if you would be interested in it but video i'd really like to watch is how to start out as psychotherapist. And in general how it is for a job. I'd really like like to listen about your experiences as I'm soon to graduate with MD in psych. And it would be really interesting to see how your perspectives differ based on work experience.
Hi @thirdman-s8v, that's an insightful suggestion - Steve and Pauline have discussed their earlier days of working with the real-world challenges of front-line healthcare across many of our videos, and they've gone into their experiences and how they helped shape the development of their Psycho-Systems Analysis in significant detail in our professional training course. We hosted a seminar for the students recently, where we went through photos of one of Steve and Pauline's early consulting rooms, discussing precisely how the room was deliberately set-up for engaging the 'unconscious'. But a dedicated video on this, to hear their experiences, is a great idea. In case you haven't seen it, we do have a video from early 2020, entitled "In The Shadow of The Masters | Becoming a Excellent Therapist", which isn't exactly what you've suggested, but it's roughly in the same domain. Thanks again! All the best, James
Yes 👍
Thank you @isma3il2005! All the best, James
Exactly midnight where I am - just a little coincidence I wanted to share 😊
Hi @minounminoun6457, midnight is the perfect time for 'After Dark'! Thanks so much for your comment, it's really appreciated. All the best, James
I missed you guys! I hope you'll be more active on RUclips.
Hi @ravishingdevil, that's a super kind sentiment - thank you 🙏 That's exactly the plan. We have lots more already lined up, and we're super excited for this new year. Thanks for your support; it genuinely means a lot. All the best, James
Sometimes people who do a lot of Qigong or directed energy work have issues with electrical devices malfunctioning not to mention parapsychological phenomenon.
Hi again @Spectre2434, that's an insightful comment, thank you for leaving it. If you're referring to the 'poltergeist', I must say, that I don't do any of the practices that you've described. Though, the 'Mesmer's Magnetic Energy' that Steve and Pauline taught me long ago (and that they teach as part of professional training) is something which I do engage with when the time calls for it. There's significant deep-structure parallels between that, and what you've listed - Steve has written about this extensively on our Discord server, and used it as a 'case study' of his and Pauline's 'Dialectical Syncretism' in previous videos and as part of professional training at IPSA. In that sense, yes, it's likely part of the same 'field', but I don't think it would be strictly 'causal' in the Newtonian sense. Food for thought! Thanks again! All the best, James
I came up with a question for the series: in this video, the fact that James is haunting Steve and Pauline, so to speak, is mentioned. It seems based on what was said that this has been happening completely independently of James‘s conscious will. If that is correct, then why is it that that is happening, exactly? What is the point of that superpositioning? Is it trying to “tell“ Steve and Pauline something, or is it just that you guys are in harmonic resonance with each other, or something along those lines? In short, I’m wondering why it is that a poltergeist that really likes you does not go away. (Of course, I only ask this question if the answer can be shared - I figure that it’s possible that this can get into personal stuff 🙏)
Hi @Navioli, that's a thoughtful comment, and it's very welcome. We could always discuss this in more detail as part of an After Dark video, no problem at all. In brief though, yes, it is completely independent of my conscious will and intention (as it always is with 'poltergeist' phenomena, and I'm not unique in this by any means). If you consider such things as 'field phenomena' (see our videos covering Steve and Pauline's Informational Monism and Superposition Theory), that helps ground everything properly: that is, it's not actually a literal 'poltergeist', but we use that 'collective representation' term as part of the rapport between us. Cheers - James
@@JungToLiveBy Thank you for this reply, James! Yes, I am aware that a “poltergeist“ is simply information presenting itself in “that“ way. Looking back at my comment, though, I can see that it needs some rephrasing and clarification: fundamentally, what I am wondering about is exactly why the phenomena are happening in this case, and the answer that I have is, “Homeostasis has dictated that this needs to be the case.“ However, I am not 100% sure what that answer means in this case. The two explanations that I have are (1) something or some things within you (or just in general) have sought out Steve and Pauline in order for Steve and Pauline to help you become conscious of those things - that idea is based on the oldish video in which your poltergeist was caught on camera - and (2) you guys are interdependent, which is to say, you guys need each other to have optimal homeostasis in your lives, and, for whatever reason, that necessitates the occurrence of the poltergeist phenomena (this is what I meant when I asked if the phenomena were being caused by your guys‘s being in “harmonic resonance“ with each other).
Would be interesting to list to a conversation about raising children, especially in those early months and years.
Hi @KaVeikiaSimas, that's a good suggestion. We have a Discord-exclusive video which touches on this topic (albeit briefly), but we haven't done a full dedicated show on it before. We'll definitely consider it! Thanks! All the best, James
Would be great to see Mark solms talk in a conversation like this, I always hear him talk about the same things, still love what he's saying, but would be great to see it coupled with the 'art' shall we say, of going about life. Excited to listen to whatever comes next!
Hi @661shivers, that's an exciting suggestion - we deeply respect Prof. Solms (his contributions are invaluable, and are an essential piece of the 'New Paradigm'), and he's hosted two seminars for us at IPSA, for the students undergoing professional training. One of them is on the channel, available for everyone to view. Thanks again! All the best, James
@@JungToLiveBy cool to hear he did another seminar, have no doubt that he'd accept an invitaion to do this new pod!
Amazing 👏🏻
Thank you very much for your kind comment @Sammymcmullan! 🙏 All the best, James
Favorite RUclips channel

Blessings, @esmeraldaag58, Kindest Regards, Steve & Pauline 🙏🙏
Will they be like 2+ hours talk with those guests?
Hi @Vodoriga, thanks so much for your support of the channel for the past 4 years - it's really appreciated. Re video length, they'll be long as they need to be 😎 We've never been shy for very long videos; our biggest is over 7 hours. All the best, James
Im new to the channel
What videos would you recommend to start learning more about jung?
Hi @ditkd690, welcome! If it were me, as a complete beginner, I'd start with our older video "How Carl Jung achieved Individuation through discovering his Personal Myth", as it places all of Jung's major concepts firmly within the context of him as a person. Understanding Jung 'the man' is utterly essential, preferably *before* studying any of his works - he himself says in Memories, Dreams, Reflections that all his works were 'his' truth, and 'his' personal myth. Missing this (and the nuanced way in which he meant that statement) is a major error that so so many people make, so avoiding this would be critical. Once you feel comfortable, then I'd go straight into our Resolve series, in the order they're listed in the playlist on the channel. They're very high level, and designed to be studied deeply, like hyperlinked video 'books', so you could take your time with them: but everything is there. The Resolve series covers Steve and Pauline Richards' Psycho-Systems Analysis, which draws significantly from Jung (his model, stripped of the fluff, is the psychodynamic 'core'), but includes huge (absolutely massive) revisions to his work from Steve and Pauline, including original clinical empiricism from them (for example, on complexes, meta-instincts, their introduction of informational monism and superposition theory etc), and other significant advances in neuroscience, neuropsychoanalysis, affective neuroscience, genetics, field-theory, 'consciousness', mind-body transductions etc since his passing. Freud, Adler, Janet etc (the early great pioneers) are all seamlessly integrated into their model, too. Or, you could simply join us for 'After Dark', and take things in a more relaxed way - up to you! Hope this helps? All the best, James
Thank you so much! I appreciate it. @@JungToLiveBy
