Juan, as commercial student that is looking to break into the aerial firefighting business, the content from this conference is pure gold. Thank you for taking the time to focus on the inside scoop of what is required to get hired on with the Cal Fire program specifically. Flying S-2’s for them has been the dream for a while now. Unfortunately there is not a huge amount of information out there on how to get to pilot jobs like these, so this helps tremendously. Keep up the good work! -Zach
Know a fellow who works for Neptune and he loves flying. I believe he flies the BAE-146. You must really be skilled to get those tankers in close and be accurate with your drop. Heat and wind can play havoc on the C-130 and all jet tankers in use today. Those guys earn their money during fire season in my opinion. Those tanker pilots are unsung heroes too.
Hey Juan! I just watched my favorite Commander. Mentour Pilot. Petr on 2 Months of unpaid leave. He has an amazing little dog, Patxi. With the Coronavirus making things difficult, time to circle the wagons. Maybe you could reach out to him. He is a Pretty Special Person. We also Love 74 Gear. Thnx! CJ
Juan, as Zach already said this is pure gold for some of us. There is very little info on this out there. Would have never know this conference existed. Thanks a million. You do great work. It's gonna suck for all of us when they let you go back to work! I'm sure you'll still be around but your cadence recently has been incredible.
As a youngster, I watched TBM Grumman Avengers reload at Vancouver International from only feet away. The pilots just kept the big radial engines ticking over until the tanks were full ... and were off again without ever getting out of their aircraft. I will never forget the great clattering rumble of a huge Wright-2600 Twin Cyclone engine as it idled. I was at some of the airshows at Abbotsford International when performances were interrupted so Conair tankers could operate. And in about 1973, I watched a Conair DC-6 extinguish a fire on a mountain in the District of North Vancouver. Watching a big four radial engine, converted airliner swooping just feet above me and skimming the tree-tops on a mountain and dumping is permanently etched in my memory.
That footage of the old TBF Avengers flying and dropping back in the day is just great to see! Man, that must have been some real flying by the seat of your pants back then. Great video Juan.
Lostcreek 1 hey, I REALLY KNOW THE FEELING ! How ? Back, in the day, I sat RIGHT SEAT, ON A B720, BRITISH LICENSE , had to SURRENDER IT FOR A MEDICAL, you speak of HURT , Aviation was NEVER GOING TO BE IN MY FUTURE, so changed out for a trade REFRIGERATION & AIR GREAT paying , somewhere I have adds for PEOPLE EXPRESS B737, & NY AIR DC9, I would have hat to take a SERIOUS CUT IN PAY, for those jobs . I was able to see the world , diving & visiting , only ANTARTICA left, not in my life am 78 now . Cheers From NJ 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Dam I feel old. There has to be a way to get Pilots and Air-tanker Pilots into the early career day events at schools to fire up that desire to become aviators and maybe even one that helps fight fires. I’m 58 now and with all these great reports and interview and coverage.... I’m regretting my career choices. I should be talking to my kids now about this as well. Such an important and exciting career. Thanks Juan....
Wow...seat of the pants, relevant experienced professionals...I’ve been retired nearly 20 years and my head was setting up finance systems in my head for the operation. Excellent Juan.
The last Ercoupe came off the line in Maryland in 1952, but the plane was made after that in other states until 1970. The company that built these was ERCO. They had their own two runway airport behind the factory that was shown on maps. The factory building was demolished in October 2013. But after they stopped making Ercoupes, ERCO went into the simulator business. They were making analog simulators at the factory in the 1960s. A number of these simulators were located at McClellan AFB.
I wondered where you were going with that until you said about the sims at Mc Clellan. Well that’s interesting. Would like to see them, good Ercoupe related history!
The S-2T is my favorite. I used to live on a hill and one day an S-2T flew about 200 ft over my roof to dive into a valley. The G limits on the S-2 are higher as it is designed for a 4 G no flare aircraft carrier landing. Only one life lost in a crash vs. three.
A friend of mine ( long since past away )had an Air Coupe years ago and he loved it . . His son took it over after his death I believe . . He had a little runway behind his house and had a few small planes I remember looking at them in a big barn . . Heck of a nice man . . Dont make em like him anymore
I was partner in a 1946 Aircoupe . NO rudder peddles. The only aircraft I was not found of. Enjoyed the video. The pilots coming up have a lot more opportunities than I . But I did enjoy teaching aircraft systems for McDonnell - Douglas and Boeing.
I watched you two on James channel yesterday and it was a hoot. You guys have a great chemistry together......................................I especially like the part where James was taxiing to the fuel pumps (for his FREE gas) at a high rate of fuel consumption and you said something to the effect that you've never taken a corner that fast in your life!!!!!!.............................One more thing about James, he wasn't intimidated flying with you.(:>) (:>)(:>)
So many great aircraft in this one! And that Canadian footage was fantastic! Hats off to all those pilots that fly fire operations - balls of steel, as we say! 😁😎 On top of all this, I now have another aviation RUclipsr to subscribe to. Going to have to stop working so I have more time to watch these vids!😜 AWESOME vid, Juan! 👍🍻
Thanks for an insider’s view into this amazing community of the people in the aerial fire-fighting industry. I’m sure some of your credibility there comes from your training and time as a lead pilot. I’ve not been much better than a white knuckle flyer, but seeing these interviews and this footage, I would have been pretty stirred by it as a young man. Thanks for getting the word out about these opportunities.
JUAN, HELLO, Thanks for this part 2 just imagine BRYAN BAKER, I knew one in CALGARY ALBERTA CA 2004 he was part of the host chapter ACH/R there also had his own business, but passed 3 years ago, so I did see a BAE146, DOING A DROP ! also, was that a DC6 ? , Stay Well, Cheers From NJ. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Juan, knew Slim Knights from Conair and work with his son Brian every day. Brian has some very interesting stories. Wear my Conair Jacket with pride. Slim didn't like wearing flight suits if you know what I mean.
It is hard to compete in the civilian world with the pilot training the military offers...It is hard to buy seat time in a 4 engine transport in the civilian world...
At time 16:33 you see an airplane taking off from runway "08"...that was not an American airport...if it was in America it would have been painted runway "8"...it was probably taking off in Canada.
This would be a great opportunity to become a Cal fire Pilot flying the OV-10 With the 5 blade Prop unfortunately I would have to relocate to The West Coast
again juan so imformative its me student pilot ed it makes me want to go apply for a job lol even thogh i havent enough hours flying yet and my age or i would just go apply and see where it gets me lol great video again
Question, when you drop your load how pronounced is the cg change in the air craft. In other words if you did not change the power or trim settings what would the aircraft do? Obviously if the aircraft remaied straight and level the aircraft would accelerate after dumping the load. But what does it actually do?
Hi Juan, love your channel. Any chance you could do a video on footballer Sala's fatal crash now the AAIB report is out. Be very interesting to get your take on it. Keep up the good work and best wishes from sunny Selsey uk.
Will there still be a pilot shortage in 3 months or a year? Got me worried here with a fat stack of student loans. That aside this fire piloting business has some appeal to me, I'm not a risk taker but I like a challenge.
I have been hearing about the "Pilot Shortage" since 1975 it was BS then, to get you to write a check for flight school and It's an even bigger amount of BS in 2020 the only difference is that the size of the check needs to be 20 times as much as it was when I went. There are just not that many seats So instead of 100 resumes on the pile you have 65 and well there must be a shortage.
I was partner in a 1946 Aircoupe . NO rudder peddles. The only aircraft I was not found of. Enjoyed the video. The pilots coming up have a lot more opportunities than I . But I did enjoy teaching aircraft systems for McDonnell - Douglas and Boeing.

Another fine video production from Mr. Browne. I can never get enough of this type of reporting.

I love the C-130 I’m only a kid but flying that thing is my dream
Always liked the OV-10. Seems perfect for the mission.
It was designed specifically for Forward Air Control.

What a great video Juan. Loved the vintage footage from Conair.

Love the C130-E & H as an USAF maintenance person with many flying hours. Good job, excellent information!

Great video Juan. RIP to Danny Johnson
I had NO idea that the aerial fire fighting business was so large in scale.
My dad flew P2-Vs in the Navy.
I worked on the Conair Turbo Fire Cat proto type. Great company.
0.56 “Right” sounded like a nod to your new friend Mr Big Jets.
I enjoyed watching you give James a hard time, both in this video as well as James'. Hilarious.
Grew up close to McClellan. Remember seeing F-111's coming and going.
Hats of to all these guys
I have down a few Ercoupe and they are a blast. Another great video sir.
Oops !!! Flown not down, things like this happen when you type on a keyboard Design for the squirrel.

Thanks Juan, I absolutely love the Aerial Fire Pilot videos! Keep them coming please... To bad I'm only at 1,000pic...
Well done as usual.
Thanks

That segment started off with "Some vintage footage from Canada from Conair" is also a good clue!
I feel that only in America would you find an “Aerial Firefighting Symposium”
One of my best buds is a pilot for Neptune and he absolutely loves it. Good stuff as always, sir!
This would be a great opportunity to become a Cal fire Pilot flying the OV-10 With the 5 blade Prop unfortunately I would have to relocate to The West Coast

My dad had an aircoup in the late fifties!
Interesting stuff!
Does anyone else hear Lux Aeterna during the vintage footage at about 15:20 -ish?
That’s some sexy firefighting flying footage!!
Juan, looks like you’re having way too much fun there. Shame you’re going to be returning to flying trucks at 37,000 feet.
very nice video thank you sir

pitches up, watch the S2-T cockpit view again...both hands pushing down elevator during the drop, plus running the trim.
You need to do a story on the Stearman behind it
I would love to be hired as a Observer in the OV-10 Bronco
Did they mention anything about needing Loadmasters for the C-130?
In my opinion i believe Cali needs more super scoopers
Hi Juan, love your channel. Any chance you could do a video on footballer Sala's fatal crash now the AAIB report is out. Be very interesting to get your take on it.
Keep up the good work and best wishes from sunny Selsey uk.
How do they make sure it's not the wrong people who are getting involved in this for scrupulous purposes,we had that issue 20 + years ago.
Check out Sonoma County Airbase. Pretty cool place.
If that Ercoupe ever had N # N93517.... might know a lot about that bird's history
Adrienne N94805 has been that way since 1948. I do love uncovering the history of these birds though.
If CalFire's looking for C-130 pilots, would that mean they're also looking for FE's, FC's & Loads also?
Shame California doesn’t use SEAT, would love to get into that and crop dust off season.
I’m going to do this.
I was just talking to Dave (the one on the left) this morning in our hangar!!! And Danny (sock monkey) needs to shave!!! LoL
Juan, as A380s are being phased out now available on the used market, would they make a good platform as firefighting tankers?
Two things Juan, nice job on the accent, and is Brian Baker seven feet tall? Thank you for the video, nice work.
12' 14"...lol
B Baker in a suit!
I got distracted at 13:46 and never heard a word he said.
Will there still be a pilot shortage in 3 months or a year? Got me worried here with a fat stack of student loans.
That aside this fire piloting business has some appeal to me, I'm not a risk taker but I like a challenge.
In an inherently dangerous business, non-risk-takers are kind of exactly what you want.

The shortage is here, and so are the side effects...
next time, Juan, you may want to consider high heels!
A ladder...lol
oil business works the following: 7 and 7, 14 and 7, month on month off, 6 and 3, 4 and 2, 28 and 14...
With this travel ban all the out of work airline pilots can fly firefighting birds.
👍🏻👍🏻✌🏻
I thought they didn’t have rudder peddles😮🤭🙏💪👏🏻🌞
God I miss the C130!!!!!!!!!
I hear conair gave a pretty big pay raise. Are salaries on par with the airlines?
I have a lot of work to do to get the hours
ROIGHHT!
Awaiting the breaking news TRAVEL BAN UPDATE.. first thought after Trump said that was “oh boy I need to hear what Juan will say”
Number 2.
Easy with those handshakes hotshot! It’s the Corona bump now!
Looks like dangerous business...
👍
Cal fire
“Bad sound makes good video look bad.”
get some better hearing aids Bruce...;-)
Pilot shortage :/ lol.
