Lifting Leyte: Faith in Action After Typhoon Haiyan

  • When Typhoon Hayian (known as Typhooon Yolanda in the Philippines) devastated Southeast Asia in 2013, this group decided to act: "I thought, 'You could probably do some good.'"
Their faith led them to help in ways they hadn’t intended. “My plan went out the window; it was God’s plan.”

    Transcript:
“Dust, reaching up to 235 MPH, buildings are now mangled, piles of wood and metal, far above the threshold of a category five hurricane. All many can do is simply pray.”
“Typhoon Haiyan, also known as Yolanda was the biggest typhoon or hurricane to ever make land fall in the history of this earth. After two or three days, the news reports were saying ‘where is the relief?’”
“The thought that crossed my mind was, ‘you could probably go other there and do some good because you speak the language. You are an EMT, you have been in construction.”
“I started contacting some people in the Philippines, trying to figure out if this was even possible, if there was any way to get onto the island, if there was transportation, or if that would even be worth it.
Once I realized that is was something that could happen, I branched out using Facebook, calling people and those I know at school.”
“I already knew that he was thinking about leaving, and then when I saw is post I was already committed to going.”
“In response to that Facebook post, a friend of mine, Preston Olsen, he responded and said, ‘hey I want to go.’”
“It was basically just an announcement, ‘hey I’m going, if you want to donate anything, get it to me before this day because this is when we are leaving.’”
“And there was an out pouring, there was over $10,000 donated to this cause, in just a matter of days.”
“When we got over there, really everything did fall into line.”
“I went straight to Cebu and landed at about midnight on Saturday night.”
“When we got to Manila, we had no way of contacting Preston, so when we did arrive in Cebu, we bought rice, caned sardines, water and starting building relief goods. We went to a local church there, where the members had just finished with their services. They helped us wrap all the relief goods into sacks that would be distributed to family units.”
“I decided to go to church and a group of EMTs that were based out of Manilla walked in part way through the meeting. I decided to go and talk to them and see what their plan was, and I ended up teaming up with them.”
“I went back to a computer shop, and Preston had messaged me on Facebook, and he said, ‘Hey I’m in Cebu, here’s my phone number.”
“I finally did get the call from Charlie.”
“Preston and the EMT group showed up with a truck and we loaded up all the relief goods onto that truck, and about 2 or 3 a.m. we got up in the morning and headed to the ports. We ended up in Elongus which is the south point of Leyte and down there was wasn’t very much damage, there wasn’t very much destruction.”
“But as we got closer and closer to the two cities of Tolosa and Tanauan, you could start to see just how destructive the storm was.”
“There was this gradient of destruction, eventually it got to the point where there was nothing standing.”
“Everything was just barren, there was nothing. There was no life, there was no energy, there was no noise.”
“There were no birds chirping, there was just destruction.”
“We couldn’t help everyone. So we-our strategic plan was to get to the city hall of the outlying towns and be able to coordinate efforts with the local leaders there to be able to distribute as much relief goods as we could.”
“The people that we were passing were very somber.”
“There were people standing on the side of the road with their hands out.”
“They were just sad and devastated and it got worse the got closer we got to the two cities.”
“That was just a wake-up call to me, to see those people without anything, just pleading for the basic necessities of life, and what was worse is that we could stop, we could help them.”
“When we got off the bus, in the city of Tanauan, and the people saw that we did have relief goods that that we were a medical relief team, their demeanor changed almost immediately because they knew that help had arrived.”
“We were the first relief group there in the outside cities.”
“Fortunately there were just a few buildings that were left standing, one of which was a local church where many people had come and taken refuge.”

So these college kids saw a part of the world devastated and flew over to help and without permission or aid other than some financial donations from friends and went to help. Who does that? How Christlike can one be? I didn't know this sort of thing was possible but I think it's awesome. I wish I could do likewise. I wish I had skills which could be used by people who really need them. I wish I could find my calling in life (even just for as short a time) as they did/discovered and acted on it/got over there quickly to accomplish it. It's amazing what they do. I think if everyone had the choice to be like a mother Teresa or someone like that we would all choose such a life. I just don't feel that empowered. How would one even start to become something like that/this? I'm amazed, and yet unfortunately really jealous and feeling sorry for myself that I can't do similar things. If I saw something like this storm on the news I would disqualify myself from helping and figure someone else would do this, or the church will aid, the last thing I would think of is flying over and helping personally. I wouldn't feel like I would be allowed, wouldn't know where to begin, who to go with, etc. They were all a good example of acting without having to be told what to do every step of the way, they just chose good and it was confirmed that what they were doing along the way was right. That's totally foreign to me. I guess I'm a lazy disciple. I feel like everything has to be spelled out for me before I take action. These kids are such great examples. I'll probably continue to think about this. Thank you for sharing goodness in the world/media when there are so many other worldly unfavorable alternatives. We need our media to balance out a bit and remind people like myself and others about the good in the world. :)
Anyways... that's just how I feel after watching that, I loved the girls shirt at the end which says "anxiously engaged" :) She was being just that haha :) They did a good work over there. Good on them! :)

I really feel the same feeling that you felt when you went in tacloban and see how devastated it is. The feeling that you want to help all those people in need. And you can't do anything for them. Those feeling hunt me whenever i watch videos of this typhoon haiyan. And see all those dead bodies of my fellow countrymen.Really bring pain in my heart.

I remember them. I went home from Manila 5 days after Typhoon Haiyan hit my hometown Tolosa, Leyte. Our house was severely damaged. So me and my immediate family ended up staying for a couple of weeks in a neighbouring Latter day saint church, together with other families. These beautiful souls came and stayed for a night from a mission. I was minding my own business in one corner but can't help noticing them enjoyingly cracking up some jokes and giving treats to the children.
