Today I pattern tested a kicks high flyer choke tube and compared it to the patterns from my Winchester SX4 choke tubes. I made a video about this in the past, but it was with a Benelli. I was surprised with the results that I got.

One thing to remember -The only thing that is consistent about shotguns is that very few things are consistent. Identical guns with the same degree of choke and using the same shell may not pattern the same. The same load between various brands of shells can pattern differently. Patterns will change when changing from hard to soft shot. Patterns can change when anything in the shell changes such as different wads, powders or primers. Note that if your head/eye is not located in the same place on the stock between bench rest and offhand shooting your point of impact will be different. Try your test with a bench rest at 40 yards to keep consistency. Also, test with 5+ shots each choke for better average results. Overall, great video 👍

I bought the Winchester SX4 this past winter and along with the Hevi-Metal Mid Range choke tube. I've had awesome patterns at 30yds with various duck/goose loads with that combination! Buying the extended range choke soon for more testing this summer.

I always buy the cheap Carlson flush fitted chokes. I have 8 different sizes!! Cylinder .730 - Imp Cylinder .720 - Modified .710 - Imp Modified .705 - Full .700 - Extra Full .690 - XX Full .680 - Turkey .665. 00 buckshot patterns the best out of my .680 choke. Although, I've seen people on RUclips get amazing results from a Turkey choke. I think I'll try the .665 next. I LOVE TO PATTERN BUCKSHOT!!!! I'll shoot until my cheek and shoulder gets sore. lol

Just a few quick tips man but the way I pattern my gun is this: i use hi viz targets. I’ll go out & buy like 20 of em with a 30 Inch circle. Then I’ll go buy a box of every ammo with u inquest characteristics. Hevi metal, black cloud, Kent, hevi steel, etc. in my favorite configuration (3 inch 2s) then I’ll shoot em at 30 and 40 yards. Everything looks good at 20 yards. The most pellet count inside the 30 inch circle at 40 yards wins.

We pattern our 10 ga. 1 1/2 oz loads with a modified choke. T's andTT's. We pattern at 50 yds. We get 50 to 55 in a 30 inch circle. Same weight load as the 3 1/2 inch 12ga. With that smaller bb shot you need a tighter choke. We would reject a load that only gave us 45 at 50yds.even with the large shot. In a true 12 bore BBB will pattern well at 50 yds. With the modified.

My kicks HF modified throws my pattern low, and my factory full choke throws a tighter pattern with bb, 2, and 4 steel. Shooting a mossberg 835 so my constriction in a full choke is about like a improved cylinder in most other guns. I think the 835 was made for steel shot

Nice video. I'm looking at getting a kicks full or extra full. I've done a lot of patterning with my sx3 and maxus. IMOP I've learned BB is the worst load after patterning. You have super tight patterns at decoyed ranges and really open patterns at 40 yds. Kent 1 shot with a full choke is my favorite long range load. Or has a full pattern and larger pellets. Otherwise, you can't go wrong with 2 shot. I'd be curious to see how that kicks would work with 2 shot.

FYI - I spent a lot of time and money this last winter with my SX3 26" barrel along with a Kicks HF Full and a Pure Gold Mod...I used 7 different brands all 3.5 BB & #2...Pure Gold from 20 - 40yds...Kicks 30 - 50yds...Out of my setup, Kent Silver Steel #2 was far and above...Only Hevi Steel #2 was even close to the Silver Steel...Oh, and by the way, the Silver Steel #2 was the only shell tested that would penetrate a pallet at 30 and 40yds. As someone else had stated, the shot string is also quite important when you want to kill something other than paper. Just food for thought.

    • @CClifton5678

I love my JEBs but for the browning/winchester invector plus chokes, they aren't compensated for the backbored barrel. It's easy to over choke them and blow out a pattern. In my INV+ guns I run Carlson Cremator mid range and it is devastating put to 55 yards.

Depends on what decoys you buy. I bought 2 dozen Storm Front 2 mallard decoys this past season. They have stood up to a lot of abuse. Their paint is also pretty realistic and holds up pretty well. Its nice to use them as filler decoys as well because they are so cheap. Probably behind we're just talkin modified versus modified with no relevance to constriction or bore sizes period pretty much makes the whole thing ill relevant

Really doesnt seem worth it for $70 unless you constantly shoot at long ranges.

Is the expensive choke worth the money? NO. I can decapitate a turkey at 70 paces consistently with a $15 Carlson .665 turkey choke with no.6 turkey loads.

You did it wrong. Factory mod isn't mod for steel. That's a lead mod constriction. The kicks is a steel mod constriction. Next time spend a few hours educating yourself before wasting time like this.
