    There's a Paul McCartney interview in the early 90s saying the exact same thing about deciding what takes to use. He says something like "if anyone hears a mistake, it's probably a very good take". I never quite got it, but now I do.

    • @mts2639
      @mts2639 3 года назад +3

      It's very common to hear this. Small mistakes make it sound natural, and can be very useful if 2 or more takes are mixed together. This is why programmed instruments don't have that magic.

      @@spiritparty That's true! In the last few months I've also learned a lot about digital distortion and aliasing.
      I guess analog distortion doesn't have aliasing, so would definitely be clearer sounding, and will make things pop more, whereas digital distortion without oversampling might muddy up a mix somewhat. :)

    I was mixing an acoustic project today. I used three microphones on the acoustic guitar and a room mic.
    When I started processing the guitar in mixdown I noticed the sound of his bracelet/jewelry/whatever he was wearing knocking against the guitar while he was strumming.
    It was mostly picked up by one of the three mics but I decided to keep the sound upfront because I felt like it had a lot of character and it wasnt too distracting.
    Im glad I'm not the only one who thinks this way 👀
    One record I did I was asked to cut out the noise of the guitarist on parts where the stool was making some noise which was a bummer because I thought it sounded really organic, like you were there in the room with them.
    Don't get me wrong, I love using drum samples, super tight editing and all the things we can do to make everything perfect now but... Sometimes theres happy accidents like Bob Ross always talked about in painting 😅

    The reason the Stones weren't happy with the release of Satisfaction is cos it was only a demo recording, never intended to be a major release.. they only found out about it after the record company had released it.. hindsight shows it didn't matter, as it was clearly good enough, but Keef heard his guitar line originally in his head as a horn section part.. they probably didn't care too much about small issues in the recording, as they would've been thinking they'd get it right later on..

      I have heard the masters of Marvin Gaye what's going on and when you hear the takes by themselves it is amazing the amount of mistakes, leaked noises and oher stuff in there.

      You're right! That's actually the reason he started using the Maestro FZ-1 fuzz because back then it was being sold as a way to get "horn" sounds on guitar!
      Today, people pay anywhere from $600-$1200 for "boutique" versions of that fuzz circuit. An incredibly simple circuit indeed! Funny to think how one band's haphazard demo spawned a generation of music, as well as a massive sub culture of music gear with effect pedals. Fuzz pedals in particular.
