The fact this is a stepping stone to ArmA 4 is what's important to me. It means we may have mods prepared for the future release. They've said the intention is for that and to overall test this new engine
@@C6B9 I think i read somewhere that Reforger is getting 1 Year of Support before they even start Mainline Development on Arma 4. So still some years off
This game actually looks shockingly realistic to me in a way a lot of games with better tech and fidelity dont. I think its something to do with the lighting, hdr and the perspective and scale of the world.
You should definitely watch some videos of Veterans playing it. They forced Shadows for long ranges which add a whole new aspect of tactical gameplay while also rewarding to move smartly. Light feels incredibly good in forests and grass renders in a nice and not noticeable way. Also while having a nice and compact pallet for vegetation. It feels like a proper small island and not 20 biomes thrown together. There experience might differ from player to player given that not everyone will be able to run at the same specs but if you have a decent pc currently, you will feel right at home. Ah and also the FPS is majorly improved.... like a lot... trust me on this as an avid Arma player who was accustomed to 20-40 fps in Operations. I barely drop under 70 here with High to Ultra Settings on 1080p while there is a lot of Ai and effects. (3060Ti and 5800x for reference)
I feel like scale and map design have a lot to do with it. Maybe something to do with the terrain being realistic, even if graphically it isn't. Barely any open world games really give me the same feeling as a lot of Arma and DayZ's maps, which might not look photo-realistic, but sell me on their environment more than any other. Arma 3's Stratis is one of the more impressive maps with its scale. At a glance it doesn't look like that big or impressive of an island, there's not a whole lot of notable landmarks; but you actually get down into it and see-from a person's perspective-just how far it goes, and how large the series of hills on it really are, and how enormous the one airfield is. Livonia's bottom half is also impressive with its huge forest and bunch of landmarks dotted around. As a mission maker it's hard to comprehend the scale accurately, until you try to go between areas on foot, and it takes you 10+ minutes. Edit: To add to this long ramble, I also think the consistency and expectations is key. If you have to noticeably change the shadow resolution (*Cough*GTAV*Cough*) 6 feet away from the player, I think you're better off just not having the higher resolution. That transition is far more off-putting than the lower resolution if I can see it. Who knows, maybe Reforger does this too, but the point is that I didn't notice it. You can often notice where a lot of modern games have had to cut corners to keep performance up while chasing these super high fidelities, which kind of defeats the purpose. Draw distance is often abysmal (the grass distance, for example, is still low and noticeable in Reforger), and there's inconsistencies in quality between different aspects. That last one is a little more nuanced, though, because I still think pixel art with realistic lighting and effects-also known as Minecraft with shaders-is peak aesthetics.
@@oxygenseller4138 Arma in general was never fully impressive with its Map Density, it was quite quite barren at times. I personally think Chernarus is one of the better if not the best Maps for having a good mix between empty and dense cities. Though if you are already impressed with the Maps in Arma 2 and 3 then you will LOVE Reforger and its super attention to detail. I thought DayZ forests where the best I have ever seen in any game but Reforger just blew them out of the water for me. It feels much much closer to real life (at least from a European perspective) and the lighting feels much softer and realistic compared to what Arma 3 sometimes does.
The mod tools are the real kicker for this release. I've already clocked almost 50 hrs in them, give it a few weeks and there will be all kinds of scenarios that you'll want to try, some are even out now. (one coop mission made by myself already; Raid on Saint Pierre, give it a try).
@@2kliksphilip There is no Editor in Arma Reforger yet. That tool what you use is just a Gamemaster Mode aka what Zeus was in Arma 3. The only real Editor is currently in the Workbench for Enfusion. As far as I know they haven't said anything final about adding it for Reforger but as far as I know there will be some form of it in Arma 4 if the need is still there and not made redundant by the Enfusion Workbench.
@@2kliksphilip They have something called the world editor which is much more powerful than the eden editor from arma 3, but much less user friendly. Its a lot like using the unity engine actually. Im not entirely sure, but I think it would be possible to mod the gamemaster mode and add some functionality for saving units so maybe it will happen.
@@2kliksphilip You can create you're own custom sceanrios in the Workbench Editor, which you can then play in the normal game, including with the Zeus Game Master editor
If they bring back those Escape missions from Arma 3, I'm in. Those were great, just you and your pals plonked down in the middle of hostile territory, left to figure out how to steal a boat or helicopter or plane with enough seats for everyone with the entire map populated. Hiding in a bush a kilometer away from an enemy air base and making your master plan for taking it on with 4 poorly-armed dudes and a jeep is some of the most fun I've ever had in a game. (They were so fun that one of the potential final missions of the campaign is just an Escape mission, except with multiple hostile factions fighting each other in the midst of it.)
Ah man your comment has just bought back memories of ARMA2 doing one of those missions. We started with 10 of us and only 2 made it out... Takistan I think it was. It was intense!
YES, those missions were (and still are, in fact) my absolute favorite memories from Arma 3. The free-form tactical fighting and looting is great, but what really sold it for me was that it's basically a really violent road trip. With a bunch of attractions marked out on the map, it's up to you and your squad to plot a route out, and I love it to death.
It would be great if they remastered OFP's original after Montignac mission where it was you stranded and looking for evac and Russians all over the island.
I'm so glad more people can finally understand the entire history of operation flashpoint and history, whenever I ramble about it everyone looks at me weird.
@@2kliksphilip that game has so much charm, the dialogue, and kinda awkward cut scenes sold it for me, it was your video you made 8 years ago that truly introduced me to ofp, I ordered a copy for the original Xbox only to find out it wasn't even backwards compatible with the Xbox 360. I later bought it on steam, it introduced me to Arma, and since I had a shitty laptop I literally worked my way up from all the arms games as I got better PCs. Thank you.
The good ole days growing up playing ofp with my dad, both of us creating missions in the editor and challenging each other lol. Still got the cold war and resistance disc in a box in my closet.
You play Arma exactly like I play it. Its literally like playing army men when I was kid. Just watching the AI fight each other really makes me just feel that same feeling as a kid.
Totally missing out on the best aspects of the game! I prefer SP games don't get me wrong but the 100 player massive operations I have taken part in where way more fun than trying to get AI to fight properly. Especially with someone running Zues. But as long as you have fun that is all that matters.
Oh my god I do the same too. I will spend 20-30 minutes setting up whatever random scenario I want and play through it in 5. Out of my 600+ hours in arma 3 at least half are single player and the other half is doing the same thing but with a few friends.
Lmao were all the same, nothing more entertaining then being a resistance sniper on the hill and witness whole conflicts escalate in the middle of the night explosions and rockets flying... Jets, tanks and helicopters inbound. It was exactly what little me did on a rainy Sunday the whole day, the mission editor learned me the basics about scripting.
@@TheBanana93 Yeah, it's cool to play SP but it gets very boring very fast because the AI so darn dumb and will stand up in open fire and get killed instantly, EVERY, SINGLE, FUCKING, TIME.
I'll admit I was worried, given ARMAs many key binds I didn't think they could do a multi-platform release without taking a lot out of the game. Instead they have made interactions much smoother and I'll never again load tracers while trying to open a door, or get in the wrong seat of a vehicle. For me and my 4,000 hours in ARMA 3 I brought this just to give a company that has given me so much entertainment a donation, the fact it's a good game is a nice surprise and bodes well for ARMAs future.
This is exactly why I bought it, played OFP from release and all the Armas since, I was hesitant to pay the 30, but when I saw arma 4 is still years away and people started making videos , I figured at the very least its a donation to a company thats given me 20 years of fun and friends made along the way.
With the mod platform being uniform across the consoles and PC, without playing it yet as 40 AUD is a bit yikes-y for what is basically a beta test, it seems like the best example of how multi-platform releases can actually advance a series rather than hold it back. Especially now with consoles that are mid-tier gaming PCs, the only real limiting factor is the controller and interface adapting to that, meaning that devs are more so pushed to make the games much more intuitive and appeal to more people, rather than gaslighting gamers into thinking realism requires an anachronistic UI that requires you to take an afternoon to get it all down when starting out, and a feature set lacking ways that other games have sorted out a decade ago.
That's something that always drove me nuts about the previous Arma games. People say it's because it's always going to be complex making a good, realistic simulator but that still doesn't mean that the basic and important stuff you do normally shouldn't be streamlined. I want to simulate being a soldier in a war, not simulate a soldier playing a simulator. Like I understand that some stuff is complex in real life but I don't want to press multiple buttons to drop my weapon to go through a door, or take 30 seconds to stand up and toss a grenade.
8:37 imagine that. Being the last few survivors of a vicious battle, only to all get killed in a freak quintuple lightning strike immediately after it ends.
This map shows that their designers are amazing. No matter what part of the map your on (even the boring parts) everything in micro detailed from hills and dips to the trees and bushes unlike any map iv seen. They had to design every inch Because every inch can be a combat zone
I've heard Arma Reforger described as the open experimentation stage for Arma 4, so they can take all feed back into account and polish everything to oblivion before setting out the real product.
Woooah the attention to detail in interiors! 1:36 just gave me a flashback of visiting grandma. This interior must force a feel of nostalgia in anybody who lives in post soviet block. The small glass green houses and the garage at 5:05 are such a small details, but so perfect
you know what is amazing? that's is even after 20 years, with the development of modern hardware and software, I just knew it is OFP again when I saw the pictures. Every thing feels the same, like 20 years ago, at the afternoon when you were a kid playing it.
Reworked engine? Awesome. Pretty much the only thing that stopped me from really getting into Arma 3 was how clunky everything was. Looking forward to see where this tech goes for Arma 4, and how the rest of the vehicles will look once they get around to them. I read a Steam review that claimed Reforger will get 12 months of development support (edit - apparently that's official from Bohemia).
Yes Reforger will get 12 Months of support with 3 Big Updates planned. That is officially given Information by Bohemia Interactive. Also if you have played Arma 3 you will love how much easier and smoother the experience is in the new Engine. As someone who played Arma 3 and got a few gray hairs with the modding alone can tell you.... Its a treat and I can't wait for the next updates.
@@dusty_reaper96 Not Fully, only for the Render, Animation and Scripting Systems, the rest still runs Real Virtuality. Also it runs on a far far earlier build than Reforger.
@@Aqueox without knowing anything about arma, or its engine, i can tell you woth 99% confidence that this engine is not new. We havent had a new game engine in over 20 years, at least i dont remember a single game that released with a new, from the ground up built engine. Thats just unheard of in game development. Halo infinite still runs on the same engine that marathon and mythic ran at in the 90s, doom still uses id tech from the 90s, call of duty runs on the quake engine, crysis runs on the cry engine, which is a heavily modified engine that was also used around 2000, forgot the name. Far crys dunia engine also traces back to the very early 2000s. Battlefields Frostbite engine is actually one of the newer ones, i think it was introduced in the late 2000s, although i cant tell you if it was based on another engine before that. Unreal 5 is still just a heavily modified unreal engine, also from the 90s. None of them are new at all. Engines only ever get modified.
5:05 That shot in specific looks really good. You could tell me that was speedup security footage of a home and I might believe it, it does look a little strange when the sun rolls in though.
A couple of notes - Arma 3 already had the Zeus "real time editable" scenarios. Secondly, I've been looking through the modding tools, and they're... extensive. The game doesn't lock you in, installing mods to join servers is a breeze, and so much of the game is changeable. I expect that given time, you'll find people making total conversion mods that completely change the game.
Arma 3 got the Zeus update at 2014 / 04 / 10. The game alpha released 2013 / 03 / 06. The Eden update that took us from the 2D mission maker released on 2016 / 02 / 18.
" I expect that given time, you'll find people making total conversion mods that completely change the game." Actually this is exactly what the DayZ devs said about Enfusion, you could make - for example - an isometric real time strategy game with the engine. But DayZ launched before Enfusion was fully complete. Now we're seeing the potential of the full Enfusion engine and it's amazing.
They forget because it's 40$ that's why. Nobody wants to admit they have a extra smooth brain that would pay 40$ for a literal engine demo. That would be insane right?
I think an Important bit that is missing here and a lot of people who just bought it without reading the Store page or listening to any prominent Arma RUclipsr is, that this is NOT Arma 4 and is not a main title. This is basically a smaller standalone stress-test and showcase of the new Enfusion engine where Bohemia wants to get the most important systems of the backbone of Arma working before fully committing in Arma 4. Basically not repeating the absolute horrible release schedule that was Arma 3 Alpha, Beta and even Full Release for quite some time. So a lot of people come into Arma Reforger expecting Arma 2 or 3 Levels of Content which I normally wouldn't blame them for if it wouldn't have been for the multiple Community Posts, Arma RUclipsrs and Store Page exactly detailing that this is basically just a glorified sneakpeak at Arma 4 Systems. There is 12 Months of Support confirmed, after which everything will fully commit to Arma 4 (Arma 4 is also already being developed). But don't expect it to reach any level of Arma 2 or 3, simply because it never was meant to go that route. The main big points for it is that all the Mods that get now created for Arma Reforger can basically be easily ported to Arma 4 later on, or with minimal rework. As well as getting direct community feedback from Veterans and Newbies alike, so that Arma can finally not become an absolute hassle for new players to get into. Especially with how bad the Situation was with Arma 3. Also there are many concerns about "Arma dumbing down for console", which is just not true. You could even argue that it got harder which NO 3D HUD elements besides the Names, so your really need to use your kompass and map to get around - location based menus which require you to look at the right spot to execute something like turning on lights in a car or switching the high beams - and also Radios finally mimicking real life closer with simulated maximum ranges and different frequencies which also can be listened into by the enemy if he gets a radio. What I see many Core Arma Players confused (especially the ones that haven't been playing too long) is that removing all the jank that is the Arma 3 Menus and Systems to be somehow making Arma, casual. Which just is factually wrong and any Arma Veteran that has played with MilSim Community for example can atest to is how much easier it is in Arma Reforger to actually get into stuff, especially with the new Mod Menu that will also work on Consoles. Also some people claimed that Arma Reforger looks bad or like Operation Flashpoint which again is just wrong. Arma was never a series that carried graphically but compared to its predecessors, its incredible (especially with forests and finally having forced Shadows which bringes a whole new set of tactical gameplay that wasn't available with the glowing Arma 3 people). As well as having the best fps that you will currently get in any Arma title especially with big operations going on (I personally never dropped below 70-80 fps with High to Ultra Settings in 1080p even with lots of Ai [3060 Ti+5800x+32GB RAM]). To basically conclude, Arma Reforger is not trying to be the another big entry in the series. The main focus is to modernize(Reforge) Arma and to get the main gameplay mechanics right from the start before going into the big Project that is Arma 4. There will be 3 Big Updates and support for 12 months but rather see it as Test and Standalone DLC.
I could've just been goofed but I got pretty disappointing performance in this game. I can't remember my cpu off the top of my head but I do have a 2060 & 16gb ram. I run Arma 3 at around 80 fps with 1600 distance, and Reforger kept dropping way below 60 on similar settings. My computer could just be scuffed but man I really hope Arma 4 isn't much harder to run. I don't care about graphics, I just want it to be playable lmao
Well said. It's probably more suitable to modders to port their mods to the new engine or to get to grips with the new modding tools and script language. Also the lack of content is, in my opinion, because the devs want feedback on everything and if they added all the cool helicopters or jets straight away no one would want to use the little unarmoured jeep. I have to disagree though about the UI and menu systems, especially the game master menus. They just feel clunky and cumbersome given they take up the entire screen and requires multiple clicks to spawn in the unit that you want. I've also seen alot of people complain about the price but you have to recognise that alot of people would happily buy the game at that price, myself included, to support the devs and it basically gives Bohemia the power to figuratively slam their cash on the table of the publisher and ask for any funding they want for Arma 4.
@@Isaac-ho8gh Currently the biggest issue with the Servers is that for some servers there is a general issue going on but also many servers are just set-up wrongly as far as I heard because some of the stuff to set the server up, just gets copy pasted by the creators without double checking if anything needs to be adjusted which causes issues later on when the Server has been running for some time.
Arma 3 has always been the only game to make forests feel like a closed ecosystem rather than just bunch of completely separate trees. This is the most graphically realistic game I have ever seen.
@@2kliksphilip You can just classify it as an armored vehicle. I think tanks are more accurately described as attack vehicles with large caliber cannons. That'd be an APC, since it's made to carry troops first and assist in combat second. After all, you have to consider ACTUAL tanks. Can you really call that a tank when you put it next to an M48 Platoon, since it wouldn't stand a chance since it's weapon wouldn't be able to penetrate the armor and it's own armor probably wouldn't stand up to a tank shell.
idc if this game gets any new content after Arma 4. I just love that its Arma but not glitchy lol. I love how you commented on vehicles bc I just got out of a game where I had commented to my passenger how nice vehicles were now that they felt like physical objects instead of slippery network messes. I haven't seen two vehicles collide in this game yet but everyone in Arma 3 knew to fear such a scenario. Plus it helps the color choices being more vibrant makes the world feel a lot better.
Remember that mission in Operation Flashpoint were you were taken prisoner. You escaped and had to find your way back in the night using only the stars.
This is papa bear to all units : The last evac from everon is at 5:45 hrs , this line scared the shit out of me , my watch showing its already 5 :00 😱😱😱😱
philip you play exactly like how i play. I have over 5k hours in Arma 3, in just singleplayer scenarios alone. Simply going into EDEN EDITOR AND MAKING MY OWN SCENARIOS, MY OWN FACTIONs, while micro managing every little detail such as what they wear, what guns they use, what they driver, what support they have, and having an massive battle. While at the same time building bases for both sides. All those hours spent doing everything like that, i really dont even enjoy multiplayer anyways. Once reforger gets more features and base content such as boats, helos, planes, eden editor, singleplayer focus.
@@2kliksphilip I used to populate multiple towns with npcs, civillians, patrolling soldiers, cars/tanks/convoys moving around, fortifications, enemy counter attacks. And then I order a large army to attack them and just follow them around as huge the battles happen town after town. That was hundreds of hours of my OFP and Arma gameplay, sounds like a small thing to add an editor mode with an empty map and a bunch of game assets, but I got more satisfaction out of that single feature than most other games I played.
Philip you should really look into what the Eden Editor in ARMA 3 has to offer in combination with Zeus, its exactly what you want at 8:09 . it allows people to quickly prepare a scenario in the Editor and Game Master it for just a few friends to large communitys built around the mode enjoying 3 missions on a weekend. It would be great to show you what can already be done. Right now Game Master in Reforger seems like a dumbed down version of Zeus.
As an ofp vet that started in 2003 that moved into arma1/2/3 THIS is the review I have been waiting to find. Reforger is bohemia's chance to release their ofp 2 that codemasters stole becoming ofp dragon rising. Even though bohemia cawnnot say this is ofp2. We the old vets see the world and hear the remade music for what it is. Great review I'm glad someone finally brought up these points.
As someone with thousands of hours spent modding ArmA 3, Reforger is an extremely exciting prospect knowing that its basically just the pre-pre-PRE-alpha of whats to eventually be ArmA 4. Plus, seeing how much easier to work with the new tools are, you can expect the modding scene for this game and 4 to be even more insane.
@@balldude8573 I'd honestly expect big mods as soon as next month. I honestly prefer tfar over this radio system but it's a great base game mechanic. Ace medical will come back I like what they've done with the medical system but I prefer a bit more realism. Weapons and factions will probably take a month or 2.
@@balldude8573 Not long. The only thing holding people up right now is the near-total lack of documentation. However, BI is planning to release it soon, and even without it people are breaking boundaries every day. I'd say within 1-2 months you'll probably see alot of big mods adding at least all the current types of assets in the game rn (cars, wheeled apcs, guns, etc.)
This is a testing platform for the Development of ARMA4 so things that you mentioned that are not there may well will be in the end. It really looks great so far and I am sure will look better
i never got into the Arma series but the fact every building got furniture in it . is kinda crazy . forget about better gameplay . no longer buildings are empty boxes .
man, i thought i was just playing a regular game just like any other, but just hearing Everon after a long time just brings me back to those fun moments.
Operation flashpoint and Arma have always been for me mostly about setting up mission or scenarios and trying them out by myself or with friends. One thing we did with a friend is both of us made a scenario and then played through each others ones after another. Like a sniper/spotter pair stealthing through forests to shoot and then escape, or defending a house or a mansion and stuff against couple of waves of enemies. It was nice, but always the gameplay has been a bit hindering with all the gunplay clunkiness and everything clunkiness, so it's nice to see that aspect being a bit streamlined. And by the looks of it, this version of Everon looks really nice and feels real. Like you can almost feel the breeze that dries up the forest and grass after the rain and stuff like that. It feels so alive! And the forests look good too. I think many games understate how even a little patch of forest can have memorable rocks and bushes and paths but this game looks good in that part. Can't wait to someday get to play it.
Oh you would feel right at home in this Game at times. Cities and Forest feel so familiar but also real. There currently is no editor in the base game but there is a huuuuuge suite of tools in the Modding Tools. There hasn't been any Editor confirmed for Reforger as far as I know but Arma 4 will most likely have something closer to the Eden Editor. Also if you don't mind not saving the Missions or already being comfortable with Zeus from Arma 3, then You will love how easy and quick the Gamemaster mode here is. If you got a buddy to play around with, you will definitely get your moneys worth. Though be warned, its Early Access and there might be some issues still present, currently there are 3 Big Updates planned and 12 months support.
@@Vinci480 Oh that sounds super good! Thanks for the good info. I can't say I'm that good with the editor in any Arma or in the original flashpoint game so it being easier to do these little missions is a big help. It's also really nice too it being set in the 80's, it feels like it's more about tactics and strategy than having the best gadgets like FLir or Nvgs and the night being typically dark for a Bohemia game can make for some interesting encounters and incidents without those. I think it's highly probable the game will be steady(ish) when I'm able to play it, I'm still rocking an editing laptop from 2016 and that would probably have to be updated before being able to game this :D
@@jonnejarvinen Haha I see your pain then :D It might work but I don't want to promise you anything yet :D Also Night Operations are a real real Treat, you should watch some Videos from Dyslexci. Also if you plan to upgrade I might would wait a few more months for the new AMD CPUs to come out so you can get onto the new Platform :P Wish you the best!
Being a loner against a huge battle is why I liked Antistasi so much, it's a mod for Arma that usually is you fighting a huge invading force as a rebel group, but since you can hire on bots you can play it solo. Something like that in this game could be incredible so long as there's assets for civilian arms and gear.
I hope that since interiors of buildings are so common now that they have much greater navigation for that. I always wished they had something like a nav mesh or something for inside buildings because it all came crumbling down when you tried to do anything fancy. Edit: this is of course referencing the bots since I play it as a single player game.
Even in multiplayer, give the FIA AI more patrols and have it so they’ll post up in buildings of towns. It’ll make the games last longer and will actually give a challenge to players who just rush through points on conflict without really clearing the surrounding areas first.
I love the enthusiasm that you display for the OFP and Arma Reforger. It's great to see someone on RUclips who admires the sheer qualities of OFP back in the [good] old days of 2001+. I've got the game accidentally in 2003 when my father bought it from a general store (it was in russian, published by Buka entertainment). Well, OFP had me learn russian alphabet because I had no internet back then and I had to play this game comfortably somehow. At that time, it was a dream come true, with the mission editor allowing to create your own stuff, from missions to campaigns... and getting the more complicated stuff from files of other missions when opening them up in a text editor (Notepad or Notepad++), scanning through thousands of lines of the mission config code. As an example - that's how I found how to lit a bonfire at the initialization of the mission :)) this inflame true!
My goodness this gets me excited. As a fellow OFP diehard, I too played this to death with friends at small LANs in the early 2ks. I would love nothing more than the original campaign and missions recreated in this engine/game. And I would absolutely pay $50 AUD for it. But by the sounds of things, it's not quite there yet. So I'll wait on picking it up until it's fleshed out a little more. Would love to see more content on this game, and on OG OFP! Release the Seagull vid!!
6:52 is pretty much the case. Engine they used and had to work with was designed as a military sandbox for military uses. They tried to ducktape game onto it. They separated ways with the engine part of company around Arma 3 release in 2013 (Bohemia Interactive Simulations daughter company to be specific, they operate as separate entity now) Now they basically have their own engine branch with their own features, more suitable for an actual game, instead of ducktape solution that was meant for defense industry usage.
I'm so glad that you as the CS, Valve and Engine/Graphics youtuber you are is making videos on Reforger and hopefully A4 when it comes out as it's usually just the dedicated arma players and big streamers making content on it.
Dont know if you know this yet but there has been some new preview pictures for MI-8 and UH-1 helicopters aswell as a M113 APC so we can probably expect them to be added soon™. Also the scenario editor has been moved to Arma Reforger tools as the "world editor" it works as a terrain builder aswell as scenario editor allowing you to spawn AI, give them objectives and other things. Its not as intuitive and simple as eden was but its worth a look if you want to build missions to play. I would assume a new version of eden wont be added to Reforger but I hope one will be in Arma 4 whenever that comes.
One thing I noticed in reforger is that vehicles no longer get launched from touching eachother they have actual physics now. Which is great I’ve seen way too many flying tanks in custom operations just making modded armoured combat a mess. Finally that won’t be the case.
@@SneedRemembrancer I don't think I'd call the 4 total vehicles in the game that the a.i can't even drive or board an "improvement" or anything even close of that.
You're the only one who can precisely formulate my thoughts and feelings on this genre. A lot of people don't get the nostalgic parts and that Arma has always had buggy and rough starts, especially considering multiplayer. It's trying to be something bigger and not settling for a single interpretation, a "right" way to play it. It's a sandbox and anyone who comes across can make of it whatever they want it to be.
Finaly the operation Flashpoint I was needing since years might come very soon. PD: I spoke too soon while the video didn't end, multiplayer? FVCK! I want a single player OP
I am yet to try Arma but I will say that single-player campaign of Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising, on Hardcore mode, is the most terrifying, intense experience I have ever had in any military-themed fps. I don't care about multiplayer so I hope they make a proper campaign for this. I won't be satisfied just with "bots" though, it's gotta be the real deal, with story, briefings, missions etc.
Philip from the way you’re talking about it I assume you don’t know that arma 3 already has what you’re looking for. The same 3D gamemaster feature is in arma 3, and you can save/load your progress mid-game, and play it in multiplayer with friends
Thank you Phillip. It still amazes me how RUclipsr's I've watched for years, make videos about stuff thats so close to me. When I started watching you years ago for CSGO content, I couldn't imagine to end up at a game company and you making a video about us. The future is bright!
Okay, big thing here, but the BTR series of vehicles (the BTR-70 in Reforger's case) are _not_ tanks; they are Armored Personnel Carriers and, depending on their armament, _at best_ Infantry Fighting Vehicles, both of which do not even come close to being able to be qualified as tanks. In other words, ARMA Reforger does not have tanks in it, just the one APC.
As I see it Reforger is basically just for testing for Arma 4. Bohemia wants to gather feedback. You buy the game because you want to influence the development of Arma 4 and support it with some money. I don't really think reforger itself will ever really be a great game. It gives me a lot of hope that Arma 4 will be an significant improvement over Arma 3. Im a bit worried by a few things though: - Arma 4 might become more casual. - Right now the Performance is really good. The AI is terrible though. A lot worse than Arma 3 AI. I hope they can maintain the good performance once they upgrade the AI. - I worried about the Netcode Otherwise im pretty optimistic though.
I've seen the Arma might become casual concern many times and I'm not sure what to think about it. A lot of people blame the reduced keybind count. With that logic Escape from Tarkov or Squad are casual games as well.
Like Chrono said, I have no worries about it being casual. I think the controls have needed a fix for a long time. Accessibility and easier basic controls will make it alot smoother for everyone involved. Think of it this way, no soldier IRL is gonna be wondering how to unzip their backpack or lay down. So why should you? yea im scared about AI, but it's the 2nd most complained about being netcode, so I don't worry that the devs will think something up. Netcode is 100% the main thing being fixed right now with this being a first time multiplayer stress test of their engine.
I remember being very, very impressed when I loaded into the tutorial. First came the vastly improved graphics and performance, second were the Movement, Vehicles, Heavy Weapons. They all feel and look so much better now. The only thing that struck me as weird is the really long necks of all the player models.
I think he Confused the Gamemaster Mode from Arma Reforger with the Eden Editor. There is currently no real Editor in Reforger besides the Modding Tools you have in the Workbench.
@@DantheChef They already do. If you check there websites you can get a general idea of whats going on and getting more specific Information. @@Vinci480 That's fair but having a bit more of a centralized look into what is happening would be a nice touch (like the Arma 3 SITREPs or Ready or Not bi-weekly news updates). I could also be that they are going to do that and I am just inpatient lmao

DayZ is very popular. I would imagine they'll make a sequel to DayZ on the full Enfusion engine and release it on all platforms, should be a very good source of income.
Hey Philip; I'm not sure if you've played Arma 3 much, but the stuff you described from around 7:58 is indeed both very cool, and is something you can already do in Arma 3! Reforger's Game Master mode is basically a reimagining of Arma 3's Zeus DLC, now made into a core gamemode. Bohemia didn't do much with Zeus in Arma 3, but the players took it and ran with it, creating communities around the idea of a Game Master, mods to improve the quality-of-life experience, and so on, to allow for (exactly like you've described) having one person (the Game Master / Zeus) changing the scenario in real-time and other players (even if it's just one or two friends) playing through it. There's also mods like Achilles which add saving / loading in real-time so you can create preset scenarios. There's no doubt Reforger / eventually Arma 4 will get all the tools it needs to do this, and more, in the core game, but if you wanna scratch that itch right now, I'd recommend looking into Zeus mode in Arma 3. I've often even used it all on my own, in singleplayer, to quickly go up into the sky, spawn some enemies for myself, and then go straight back to fighting from first person. ...though admittedly all the stuff you said about the clunky HUD is still the case in Arma 3, and I personally can't wait until I'm able to do all the things I can do in Arma 3, but in a new engine with actual nice handling, movement, and user interface.
the devs definently have put a lot of effort into the new engine but I am seriously worried if the new engine will be restricted over having capable vehicles and aircraft which arma 3 was notorious for. I hope I'm being ignorant but reforger just feels a lot like dayz so I'm pretty worried if modders are only able to import helicopters with bad physics that already exist in dayz
@@Karv3r You'd hope they don't end up trying to sell DLC for an Early Access game... I've just be conditioned to be super cynical of every developer, publisher, and corporation.
only thing i dont like is the new editor feels alot clunkier and like it was made for consoles rather than pc. also the not being able to play n a server for more than 20 min without getting booted. bohemia pls fix
This will only have one year of support(says on the steam page), so it’s fair they didn’t add many vehicles or any scenarios overall. I think that the concept of a stepping stone or a intermediate product to have players/modders first impressions and add upon their feedback is a big brain move for a studio
While I agree with some of your points made in this video I have gotta disagree with you saying it is good that the arma devs are being encouraged to move away from making a sandbox like game into a more conformed game with defined gamemodes. I think one of the key reasons so many people have put large amounts of hours into arma (myself - 1100 hours - included) is *because* it is a sandbox game where you can literally make whatever mission/gamemode you like with the unique mission editor and the vast things you can do with scripting. I think that while that is currently not in reforger it should be introduced as it is a key part of arma and should most definitely be added so it can be brought seamlessly into arma 4.
I do love the idea of being able to play as a single player in a massive island-wide battle. I just don't have the time to commit to coordinated massive multiplayer scenarios. it seems like the game is moving in the direction of keeping true to the ARMA roots as a military sim where you CAN participate in massive online battles, but is also making a single player and co-op gameplay and scenarios more feasible.
ARMA games are great, I remember figuring out how to use the scripting in the editor and I was kind of amazed by the environmental detail in Arma II, I wrote a script that gave me a list of all near by objects and there was everything from different flora and insects all around me.
I simply love it, it still very much looks and feels like an arma game but with all the core aspects that are better. So excited for the future of arma !
This is just a stepping stone for arma 4, it is so that we can mod and give feedback accomplishing 2 things; 1) So that what happened to arma 3 doesn't happen again, by the time 4 launches, most of the player base will already have the mods required to switch. Arma 3 took years to pull the playerbase from arma 2 2) It is not a bug fest with missing features that are too late to add. Arma 3 was and still is today a janky weird game, you cannot have proper convoys without someone launching to air or catching fire due to the weird physics engine. There is a lot of people pushing for singleplayer features, as mentioned, we are the guinea pigs of BIS, it is the future of arma and it is in our hands to be shape it the way we want. Whatever the devs cant or wont add, mods will do that aswell. Even arma 3 got saving thanks to modders while the official scenarios were lacking them. My hopes are high for what is to come from arma, and i hope you get to live your dreams aswell klikphilip.
I’m personally happy to see more “simulator” games come to console. Between Insurgency and Hell Let Loose, it’s nice for us console players to finally get more of this long neglected genre, especially a staple of that genre no less.
Enfusion is probably the first arma engine that can actually handle a huge amount of players, i could tell no client issues when loading more than 60 players, a huge step up from the huge performance effect from switching from 16 to 32 players in Arma 3. and even though the week 1 server issues dont work with too many players, itll probably be fixed soon
Operation Flashpoint was one of the classics of my youth. Reforger really is a great follow up to the game. Absolutley beautiful game engine. A bit buggy, but it is arma and it's a lot less buggy then the other arma games.
WOW! I never knew Operation: Flashpoint was the parent game for Arma! I have memories of playing Flashpoint back in like, 2002! And that Codemasters were the creators. Crazy.
You bring up some really good points. It's true Operation Flashpoint and Arma 3 are remarkably unchanged. I would make little missions and they play basically identically in both. Hell, in 20 years they were never able to make door gunners actually grab their guns.
I think I play this the exact same as you do, and Arma Reforger just isn't my thing beyond a pipedream about what can be achieved in this new engine. I want to see this new AI with its 'advanced' quirks working properly against a coordinated team, but I don't really feel like playing what is essentially Squad but with a Cold War lick of paint beyond that
Literally the only thing I wanted from the next itteration of Arma was better a.i and performance. It's literally fucking worse and downgraded in every aspect besides minor graphical and ui improvements.
@@spacewargamer4181 Oh it's not Arma 4? My bad bro s'all good then I had no idea. You aren't serious? You realize the fact it's not even Arma4 nor do you a discount on it makes this an even scummier cash grab right? Explain to me why "this is not arma 4" it makes it fine to charge 40$ for a completely stripped engine demo missing the most basic of features that are hallmarks of the series? All I wanted was better A.I and performance, and we'll see maybe I'll be wrong. Maybe they're overhauling the editor and A.I and with optimization performance will be able to support 100's if not 1000's of soldiers and vehicles fighting simultaneously. That's all I wanted from the series, not stripping down every single aspect to make it a shitty multiplayer pvp squad shooter for consoles.
I find it funny that this is kinda a Operation Flashpoint "remake" and the first Arma that is on XBOX like Operation Flashpoint 1 was the only OFP/Arma on the Original Xbox (in 2005 ... with a FOV of 30° or so).
Also i love that we now got a map mased wetness approach like in BF2042, everything that touches water becomes wet where it did touch water. Look at the throusers, upper throusers is dry while legs are wet.
The way you described playing Arma is exactly how I've spent easily 98% of my 2700 hours in Arma 3 over the past 8-9 years. 3 was my first entry into the series, and I loved it -- often more as a walking simulator in the official maps or the player-made maps. I went on lazy Sunday morning drives on sunny days, or night drives with lofi chill hop music playing. I'm hopeful Reforger/4 will retain the same ability to navigate by the stars -- orienteering for long hikes/marches will be even more amazing now. And of course, the lighting, the feeling of being more IN the world, etc. that you covered. I also spent a lot of time learning to script partially to fully procedurally generated missions in Arma 3 b/c I was looking for that similar one-player-among-many-AI experience you enjoy. ALiVE and some of the other mission maker scripting frameworks were really useful for streamlining this process with AI caching, virtualization, and de/spawning with varying levels of logistical tracking to provide some kind of resource limit and win condition for destroying 90%+ of the enemy's available deployment points or whatever. I just found your channel, and I really click with everything you said.
The fact this is a stepping stone to ArmA 4 is what's important to me. It means we may have mods prepared for the future release. They've said the intention is for that and to overall test this new engine
Do you know when Arma 4 will be released?

This game actually looks shockingly realistic to me in a way a lot of games with better tech and fidelity dont. I think its something to do with the lighting, hdr and the perspective and scale of the world.
Ye same here, it does have this real light look
That last one is a little more nuanced, though, because I still think pixel art with realistic lighting and effects-also known as Minecraft with shaders-is peak aesthetics.
would recommend kingdom come deliverance, gives a similar vibe with the lighting
@@blunttongs Those missions always made me feel like Rambo. Tbh wish there could be more of them.

Totally missing out on the best aspects of the game! But as long as you have fun that is all that matters.
I’m the same way lol
For me and my 4,000 hours in ARMA 3 I brought this just to give a company that has given me so much entertainment a donation, the fact it's a good game is a nice surprise and bodes well for ARMAs future.
oh god the scroll wheel can go fuck itself, i hope they only keep it for the squad management.
I remember trying the free demo version of Arma 3 years ago and never figuring out how to open a door.

It is crazy how much larger a world feels when there is more details in it. The comparison screenshots at the beginning show this perfectly.
This map shows that their designers are amazing. No matter what part of the map your on (even the boring parts) everything in micro detailed from hills and dips to the trees and bushes unlike any map iv seen. They had to design every inch Because every inch can be a combat zone
The defining factor in open world games is density not size.

Thats basically exactly what it is.
Might not do it justice fully but it sets the bar of expectation fairly good for the experience you get currently.

you know what is amazing? that's is even after 20 years, with the development of modern hardware and software, I just knew it is OFP again when I saw the pictures. Every thing feels the same, like 20 years ago, at the afternoon when you were a kid playing it.
When I see reforger I feel like kid staring at the ofp box thinking of all the things I can do. I never felt that same excitement in arma until now.
Reworked engine? Awesome. Pretty much the only thing that stopped me from really getting into Arma 3 was how clunky everything was. Looking forward to see where this tech goes for Arma 4, and how the rest of the vehicles will look once they get around to them. Halo infinite still runs on the same engine that marathon and mythic ran at in the 90s, doom still uses id tech from the 90s, call of duty runs on the quake engine, crysis runs on the cry engine, which is a heavily modified engine that was also used around 2000, forgot the name.
" I expect that given time, you'll find people making total conversion mods that completely change the game."
Actually this is exactly what the DayZ devs said about Enfusion, you could make - for example - an isometric real time strategy game with the engine. But DayZ launched before Enfusion was fully complete. Now we're seeing the potential of the full Enfusion engine and it's amazing.
Arma Reforger is more of a techdemo, and i feel like people forget that. it is a bridge for arma 4, showcasing what is to come

Yeah this is a good summary of what's up
I could've just been goofed but I got pretty disappointing performance in this game.
People know this is an alpha, its that early versions of games are still a bad excuse for incompetence like servers not being tested enough.
6:26 Armchair army expert reporting in: Not a Tank. Tank you for your time
APC: Yes
Tank: no
:)
Its a tank if it identifies as one 😂 or maybe a low level tanker in a rpg game
@@2kliksphilip You can just classify it as an armored vehicle. I think tanks are more accurately described as attack vehicles with large caliber cannons. That'd be an APC, since it's made to carry troops first and assist in combat second. After all, you have to consider ACTUAL tanks. Can you really call that a tank when you put it next to an M48 Platoon, since it wouldn't stand a chance since it's weapon wouldn't be able to penetrate the armor and it's own armor probably wouldn't stand up to a tank shell.
@@2kliksphilip Don't worry, most are probably on a forum somewhere discussing if it is a AM2B3 or AMRB4 based on the night vision lens equipped :)

idc if this game gets any new content after Arma 4.
@@2kliksphilip What about doing that but in a multiplayer enviroment?
@@2kliksphilip I used to populate multiple towns with npcs, civillians, patrolling soldiers, cars/tanks/convoys moving around, fortifications, enemy counter attacks. And then I order a large army to attack them and just follow them around as huge the battles happen town after town. That was hundreds of hours of my OFP and Arma gameplay, sounds like a small thing to add an editor mode with an empty map and a bunch of game assets, but I got more satisfaction out of that single feature than most other games I played.
5k hrs on your own? touch grass mate jesus

You described ArmA 3's ZEUS around 8:20ish with the scenario editor. Arma 3's editor and Zeus is insanely fun, edited in real time etc
Plus, seeing how much easier to work with the new tools are, you can expect the modding scene for this game and 4 to be even more insane.
gmod type modding will always work
How long do you think until there’s proper mods out for reforger?(new factions, vehicles, weapons etc.)
'Everything I didn't not want for it to be'

i never got into the Arma series but the fact every building got furniture in it . is kinda crazy . forget about better gameplay . no longer buildings are empty boxes .
man, i thought i was just playing a regular game just like any other, but just hearing Everon after a long time just brings me back to those fun moments.

I was in the real Reforger in 1988, this game is full of nostalgia for me :) Fun to see my era's weapons and gear.
why does it look as good as a 2015 game as much as it looks like real life
because modern games assume your eyes are a camera, ArmA doesn't.
As an example - that's how I found how to lit a bonfire at the initialization of the mission :)) this inflame true!
reforger changes the format by finally having a new engine lol
it's honestly amazing what they managed to do with that engine
Finaly engine that uses all cpu cores
I'm so happy that what started as my favorite game from childhood is still receiving development as a series almost 2 decades later.
The best Arma Reforger introduction video I have ever seen

Bohemia finally found out what a software engineer is
Love how you called that APC a tank just to piss people off! Never change Philip
6:52 is pretty much the case. Engine they used and had to work with was designed as a military sandbox for military uses. They tried to ducktape game onto it.
They separated ways with the engine part of company around Arma 3 release in 2013 (Bohemia Interactive Simulations daughter company to be specific, they operate as separate entity now)
Now they basically have their own engine branch with their own features, more suitable for an actual game, instead of ducktape solution that was meant for defense industry usage.
But the VBS4 world map does look cool tho
I'm so glad that you as the CS, Valve and Engine/Graphics youtuber you are is making videos on Reforger and hopefully A4 when it comes out as it's usually just the dedicated arma players and big streamers making content on it.

I climbed a ladder yesterday with baited breath... I made it to the top just fine.

Yeah they get get stuck in the ground and launched from touching nothing at all now.

You only played 20% of the game.
A cool thing is that the modding tools in this new engine are insane. you can basically make any thing , the support is really good
Obligatory comment how the BTR-70 is not a tank.
It's an APC.
In other words, ARMA Reforger does not have tanks in it, just the one APC.
i had an aneurysm that cured my blindspot reading your title, thanks
5:58 There's no tanks in reforger. The only armoured vehicle is a BTR
OFP Map Editor was my first ever addiction. Its so cool that we have gone back to the OG map, now I just need to reacquaint myself with the island.
Im a bit worried by a few things though:
- Arma 4 might become more casual.
- Right now the Performance is really good. The AI is terrible though. A lot worse than Arma 3 AI. I hope they can maintain the good performance once they upgrade the AI.
- I worried about the Netcode
Otherwise im pretty optimistic though.
I've started watching you about 10 years ago, with your "Running across Everon" video ) And now Everon is officially back and it's better that ever.
Reforger doesn’t have _any_ tanks. It has 1 Russian armor personal carrier. It has wheels not treads
I remember being very, very impressed when I loaded into the tutorial.
First came the vastly improved graphics and performance, second were the Movement, Vehicles, Heavy Weapons.
They all feel and look so much better now.
The only thing that struck me as weird is the really long necks of all the player models.
For your point about the editor, did you play Arma 3 with the EDEN editor and Zeus because it wasn't too far away from what you were talking about
I think he Confused the Gamemaster Mode from Arma Reforger with the Eden Editor.
There is currently no real Editor in Reforger besides the Modding Tools you have in the Workbench.

Seconding this, I was about to come and write basically the same comment!
If someone remakes the CWR campaign for Reforger, I'll buy it in a heartbeat. But right now - I'll wait for a sale.
the devs definently have put a lot of effort into the new engine but I am seriously worried if the new engine will be restricted over having capable vehicles and aircraft which arma 3 was notorious for. I hope I'm being ignorant but reforger just feels a lot like dayz so I'm pretty worried if modders are only able to import helicopters with bad physics that already exist in dayz
Yeah, looking at this footage I saw a lot taken from DayZ Standalone. Not a bad thing, just weird that no one else mentions it.

I'm super pumped to see what BI has in store for reforger and in the later future arma 4. this is gonna be a hell of a fun ride, bois.
this track near the end is awesome major starcraft vibes, love your music production
This is just a stepping stone for arma 4, it is so that we can mod and give feedback accomplishing 2 things;
1) So that what happened to arma 3 doesn't happen again, by the time 4 launches, most of the player base will already have the mods required to switch. Arma 3 took years to pull the playerbase from arma 2
2) It is not a bug fest with missing features that are too late to add.
The fact you can now climb walls and greenhouses without a mod just makes me happy and content
The fact you put up a warning for Red Rising's intro is hilarious
I still have an original copy of Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis Gold Edition loved that game so much.
Also i love that we now got a map mased wetness approach like in BF2042, everything that touches water becomes wet where it did touch water. Look at the throusers, upper throusers is dry while legs are wet.
Can't wait for cold war crisis remake when Arma 4 comes out
The way you described playing Arma is exactly how I've spent easily 98% of my 2700 hours in Arma 3 over the past 8-9 years.
I'm so excited for this game. Huge OFP and resistance fan here (have played Dayz, Arma 2, and OFP DR). I'm hoping it works for linux soon
