Michael Jackson was the first international star to perform in Romania in 1992, and again in 1996.Related to the English language, here in Romania until the beginning of the 70s, French was taught as a foreign language.then it gradually changed to English. in high school we used to learn Russian + English or French + German. could not choose otherwise. Fun fact, nobody knows Russian more than 3-4 words😄
Most Romanian’s speak English because after the communist regime fell all movies and music imported where from the USA and they were never dubbed. We used subtitles in Romanian for movies even to this day. Compared to other countries that used to watch dubbed movies in their own language. It’s still hurts my brain to comprehend that most italians, spanish or german people never heard the real voices of actors like Sylvester Stalone, Leonardo did Caprio or even Margot Robbie. Another important fact is that we had to use all our devices like computers or phones in English because the romanian language option appeared pretty recent. There is a downside to this, if you give a phone to use and the language is set to Romanian I simply can’t use it and even to this day despite being fluent in English, every time I watch a movie I need to read the subtitles even though I use the English subtitles I need to use it to feel engaged with the movie. 😅

Hot soup during winter will keep your body warm. It is not really something to have during summer, but it is good anyways. Hot soups in Romania are mostly for winter days, when you are going out to temperatures below freezing. The alcohol shoots are useful during winter as well, makes your blood pump up like crazy. Aside from that, garlic keeps some viruses away(you know the story of garlic versus vampires). During winter garlic is quite useful over there(natural shield against flu)
Hey, Sly! A little bit of info on the internet infrastructure. The internet is so cheap and fast because at first it was not regulated by the government and the infrastructure in Bucharest was built by enthusiasts. You would see LAN cables hanging all over the buildings. All this because people were hungry for information after having lived through a communist regime. I was one of those that installed internet in the early days. Besides internet being unregulated at first, we also skipped copper based tech and went directly to cable, fiber and DSL.
mate... you seem to be one of the young ones... at first there was the dial-up with it being a lot cheaper after 22:00, and you would spend at least 30-45 minutes trying to connect! the neighbourhood networks came a couple of years later.
@@vicu_negru Yes I think I'm younger and thank you for all you have done before me. I remember my bigger brother downloading mp3's through dialup which was a pain in the ass before odc and dc++ took over. He would wait for so long just for the download to cut off at 95-99%. And you didn't have resume back then.
Romania has fast and cheap internet and phone subscriptions. A 1 gigabit internet connection costs about 10 euro per month and an unlimited phone and data subscription costs 2.5 euro per month.
You ate at a soup small shop. Those looked pretty thick. If you would go for a main dish, they would have less sauce, more vegetables. 75 lei = 15 euro for two soups and a drink, not too expensive but for the low and average Romanian salary, pretty expensive.
I don't think it's expensive 75 lei is quite a good price. I live in Romania and with my salary it's enough for me to eat in the restaurant and do my shopping for the month at Lidl, Kaufland, Carrefour. It is a myth that people live in poverty in Romania, I am doing quite well.
Thanks for this! I'm kind of a nervous person and you are so good about being real that it is what it is and it's still great but yeah, if someone breaks glass behind you, you're not gonna ignore it LOL
I went to Romania last year. Great country, especially Transylvania but Bucharest is awful to stay in for more than a few days. Do yourself a favor and get to Brasov, Sibiu and Cluj-Napoca as soon as you can.
- Exactly what I wanted to say! As an extra, I think that was the hottest summer in recent years.. with way above normal temperatures.. - Bucharest is usually hot in the summer, but this year, the whole country was scorching hot.. Romania is NOT Bucharest though.. - I loved the word 'random' :) :) (I didn't think 'mixed' was the right word) - Huge differences in food flavours (even though some recipes might be the same) in different parts of the country Thanks for your videos!
I wonder what could be so awful for a tourist. You have a nice room, usually in the center city, you don't have to use public transportation during rush hours to get to work, you're basically just chillin'. And for that you have lots and lots of theaters, parks, restaurants, clubs. More trees than in western city, better internet, better quality of food, better people, lower crime rate, better literacy, different architecture styles, better public transportation. Of course, you you want to escape a big vibrant city, you could go to smaller, provincial cities. There life is much, much slower, but also the downside of the number of anything. Less clubs, restaurants, parks, people, public transportation if any, and so on. Basically Bucharest is about 10 provincial cities put together.
😂Sly, I laughed when I saw the stinging pepper that you put it all in the vegetable soup. You don't eat it like that. You take it in your hand and bite a little bit of it and eat a spoonful of soup.🤣
In the early 90s when american cartoons came on TV they were in english and a lot of people, like me, we were in kindergarden back then, so we picked up english naturally from hearing and seeing what was on TV. By the time I started english class in 2nd grade, I already knew basic english. In 5th grade, I was already very proficient.
European Continent ends in Russia at Ural Mountains. Romania is right in the center of Europe, so we are Central Europe not East. We were called ''east '' before 1990 just by political reasons. Calling Romania '"East Europe '' is like me calling Nebraska ''East Coast '' :))
I beg to differ. "Eastern Europe" is denominated as those areas that subscribe to Eastern (Orthodox) Christianity. Like the Romanian Orthodox Church. Also, it should be noted that Romania is in the Eastern European time zone.

When talking about "soups", in Romania we actualy have 2 main types: Soups, wich are usualy light, can be sweet or sour and depending from wich part of the country they originated from, can also be a bit spicy. As a few examples, your clasic tomato soup, or chicken soup or mushroom cream soup. The second kind are labeled as broths in the clasic english cuisine. These usualy have a meat broth as base, contain a few different types of veggies and spices and are called "ciorba de _____" ( depending on what the main ingredient is ). A popular example wich tastes realy good, if prepared corectly, is called "ciorba a la grec", wich translates into "greek style broth" ( the second one you tried out ). Or the traditional "ciorba de burta", wich translates into "belly broth" ( the first serving you had, the one with the pepper).
Words don't translate directly from English to Romanian, Romanian/English. It's what they call in linguistics " false friends" or false cognates.( according to Wikipedia: In linguistics, a false friend is a word in a different language that looks or sounds similar to a word in a given language, but differs significantly in meaning.) "Belly broth" is called "tripe soup" in english. Also what they call broth, is what they call in romanian "zeama" or bulion (ori supa). Ciorba in english is Soup. It's just a little backwards between the two languages, which can be a little confusing :)
If I'm guessing right, where the video starts, you're around Stefan Cel Mare (Stephen The Great) area. There's a stadium nearby. Dinamo. Ciorbarie huh? This dish too is turkish in it's origins. It's not exactly soup. It's ciorba. What you're having there is sour tasting, whereas soups are sweet tasting.

From 15th September kids go back to school and people come back from holidays to work, so expect a very busy and noisy city. It won't be as free and chill like now on July and August. But temps go down and weather is more enjoyable.
If it carries on like that soon Romania will have mass migrations into the country. And I also strongly believe that in 10 years Eastern Europe will overcome Western Europe if things are continuing same way!
You appeared to try a beef chiorba if I spell correct, a swee soup can be pork or chicken also . The green pepper is usually given on the side and very hot . In reality, there is no "Jewish neighborhood". It would have been around 1940, but since then the world has left and now they are ordinary people, 90% of them are not even Jewish. The Jews in Romania do not live in groups and are generally integrated into the general population, so you will never realize that they are Jews, if they do not tell you, or by name. Also, for Romanians in general, the fact that you are Jewish or not has no importance.

Very nice video! Gotta mention Romania is not fully in Schengen just yet. Only if you travel by airplane. If you travel on land, you still have to stop at border checkpoints.
Schengen zone only by air at this moment, Sly. Not on land (yet). Romania is also part of NATO. Both memberships (EU & NATO) have helped us a lot in our speedy development (as a country).
Shengen applies only for airports since March 2024, not for road transport and it will not change soon. There is plenty of variety in Bucharest, but it suck too live mainly because of the clutter and air pollution. During the school break the traffic should be much better. Cities in Transylvania or the north are quite more interesting I would say, but the real charm of Romania is its outdoors, mainly the Carpathians and the Danube Delta. Regarding the prices : for restaurants it went up at least 30% in the last 4-5 years, because there is demand.
Sly, you avoided all the things worthy of admiring in Bucharest, a lot of interesting and beautiful places, just to prove at any cost that the city is a slum?!?? You filmed on Calea Victoriei, heading straight to the Athenaeum, the Royal Palace (today the Art Museum), to an airy and beautiful area. But you abruptly cut the movie, without explanation, continuing with a marginal and unimportant neighborhood, old and decrepit. I am beginning to think that you are traveling this part of Europe with the intention of discrediting it, not for real tourism and the pleasure of discovering new cultures...

solid video bro, glad you enjoyed it out there
lol bro, I went to Bucharest last year and totally agree. The prices are like American prices; it's not cheap! Still loved my time there 🔥
moving there from US as soon as our apt is completed - Timpuri Noi. Cant wait. My wife was born and raised in Bucharest. She moved to US about 15 years ago off an on. We visit alot...and I am hooked. I need me some Luca and Kebap!
I love Bucharest! it's a gritty city, but it's fun. You'll never be bored there and the people are pretty laid back.
Besides internet being unregulated at first, we also skipped copper based tech and went directly to cable, fiber and DSL.
lol, this is fake story, Romania left communism in 1989, first internet via provider released in 2002. 13 years.
mate... you seem to be one of the young ones... at first there was the dial-up with it being a lot cheaper after 22:00, and you would spend at least 30-45 minutes trying to connect! the neighbourhood networks came a couple of years later.
Romania Internet best of the europe! it's crazy fast!
@@cimilarkes8934 3rd in the world , Singapore is 1st i belive
Romania has fast and cheap internet and phone subscriptions. A 1 gigabit internet connection costs about 10 euro per month and an unlimited phone and data subscription costs 2.5 euro per month.
It is pretty interesting. Thank you, sir
Great video. Subscribed!
Good job Bro !
Enjoy Bucharest! Tip - visit Moghioros Park in Drumul Taberei neighbourhood
Beautiful summertime Romania 🎉
Have a nice trip, Sly
- I loved the word 'random' :) :) (I didn't think 'mixed' was the right word)
- Huge differences in food flavours (even though some recipes might be the same) in different parts of the country
Thanks for your videos!

I lived in Bucharest for 14 years. Met my wife and had 3 kids there. I am half Romanian. Interesting to visit very hard to live there.
Thanks for sharing your experience
😂Sly, I laughed when I saw the stinging pepper that you put it all in the vegetable soup. You don't eat it like that. You take it in your hand and bite a little bit of it and eat a spoonful of soup.🤣
It's called hot pepper. It never stung anyone.

Same here. I live in the US now and everyone is shocked. I tell them I was an American weeaboo
@@williamgreen575 I am Romanian and my grandparents were catholic ( germans ) :)) In Romania we have all religeons. Even the Romanian President is not orthodox.
@@williamgreen575 Bro, you really hate geography lmao. Romania geographicaly is right in the center of Europe. What you said about religeon and stuff, makes zero sense.

Super cool bro! Keep it up!
Romania love MJ, that's the only thing I knew about Romania as a kid lol
When talking about "soups", in Romania we actualy have 2 main types:
Soups, wich are usualy light, can be sweet or sour and depending from wich part of the country they originated from, can also be a bit spicy.
1:14 Ciorbărie
Soups are quite good in Romania, I must admit. 🍛
The absolute best
About the soups...the second one had sour cream in it 😅
If I'm guessing right, where the video starts, you're around Stefan Cel Mare (Stephen The Great) area. There's a stadium nearby. Dinamo. Ciorbarie huh? This dish too is turkish in it's origins. It's not exactly soup. It's ciorba. What you're having there is sour tasting, whereas soups are sweet tasting.
4:33 it's where I grew up, but I see they demolished the house to build an apartment building. Unrecognizable from the nice, quiet street that Dorobanti once was

Love your videos - going to Bucharest in September for the first time. Do you have any recommendations on which sector to stay in as a first timer?
6, 1 and 2
and 3 if you like trees and nature. 3 is the greenest.
Just avoid sector 5. All others sectors are decent, especially 6 and 3 and 4.
From 15th September kids go back to school and people come back from holidays to work, so expect a very busy and noisy city. It won't be as free and chill like now on July and August. But temps go down and weather is more enjoyable.
do not miss the Unirii fountains show, Friday-Sunday, at 20.00 (for September)! And visit Therme Bucharest

Nice vid! we're not part of Schengen yet.
If it carries on like that soon Romania will have mass migrations into the country. And I also strongly believe that in 10 years Eastern Europe will overcome Western Europe if things are continuing same way!
Heading in March 2025 cant wait, look beautiful
We were there 4 months ago. We had a wonderful time.
Thank you for being quiet indoors, many tourists are not.
You appeared to try a beef chiorba if I spell correct, a swee soup can be pork or chicken also . The green pepper is usually given on the side and very hot .
I have been visiting Romania for 8yrs back and too from the uk.now I have retired I bought a property outside of ploiesti with my Romanian wife who i met in the uk. The people are very nice , pleasent, I have great respect and feel very safe having moved from the uk
No regrets at all .
Amazing the women looking great even the old ones ❤l

It's little Paris, not little Berlin. Romania is a latin country, you'll hear everyone in Romania say that.
So are the most strangers who visit Romania. First they think that we are a 3-rd rated country, but after all want to come and stay in Romania. Slay , bet that you live much worse in your country and you don-t have the facilities who you seen here

Those enormous advertisements on the buildings are wild!
You should visit the Bellu Cemetery, it is like a museum of structures in the form of tombs, you will rarely see such designs in the world. They have a very rich history. If I'm not mistaken, it's the biggest cemetery in Europe... that's what I read and heard.
My 3 year old daughter walked in just as you switched to your facecam. She said "Hello!" and waved at you, thinking I was in a call. 😅
If you are ever back in Bucharest, you should also check out Dristor and Drumul Taberei. I found they both made for relaxing walks.
we make "brandy" from pear, sour cherry, prunes, apple, grapes ))) all natural and tasty
hey bro on the first soup we romanians usually put sour cream on it , thats a beef soup and we bite from the pepper we don t put it in the soup , you can also ask for that sour peppers i think its in english those are pepper stored during winter and they are very good enjoy romania

Very nice video! Gotta mention Romania is not fully in Schengen just yet. Only if you travel by airplane. If you travel on land, you still have to stop at border checkpoints.
the soups are normally richer but it depends on how some cook it ❤
Schengen zone only by air at this moment, Sly. Not on land (yet). Romania is also part of NATO. Both memberships (EU & NATO) have helped us a lot in our speedy development (as a country).
Got to deploy to Romania and a few other countries over there and LOVED IT
