- After the Civil War, the Reconstruction era brought about hope and change in the form of citizenship and equality in America. Black men were given the right to vote, and in 1870, Hiram Revels became the first African American in the U.S. Congress when he was elected to represent Mississippi in the Senate. What followed included more than 2,000 Black office holders serving at every level of America’s political system. Sadly, this progress was short-lived.
Black men were denied access to the ballot box and the rights they were granted at the start of the Reconstruction period slowly diminished. In result, a Black presence in Congress was completely eradicated by 1901, and it would take a full generation for it to be restored. In this episode of Black History in Two Minutes or So, we’ll discuss the African-American achievements in the political system that were systematically overturned.

Senator Hiram Revels was the Founding President of the nation's 1st Public institution of Higher Education for Black Americans up from slavery - Alcorn University. In essence, Alcorn State's founding married the responsibility of education of the former slave with the U.S Government and State government; securing those the right to a Higher education in America. This notable University should be honored and protected for it's contributions to American History.
Voting is not the answer for back people. It has not helped black people in decades. This video really breaks down and explains why. Please watch.

This is why I am not a lefty 😂
@@bb3ll07 understandable, I just wish republicans honored him more because Democrats just won't do it for some reason. Dude is a large figure in the progress of Black people with education and U.S history in general. He's a giant
Great lesson ! Finally found a black being giving this teaching.. what stands out to me is the photo at 0:49 .. pause it.. theres NO black hand on the shoulder of a white , only a white hand on the shoulder of a black.. that photo alone spoke so much about American history without even saying a word.. very observant i am..
Thanks to Robert F. Smith for sharing on his page! We must get the word out in order to forge ahead. Knowing our history can change our future.

wow, so cool
Alcorn State thanks you all for Senator Revels work establishing the first HBCU landgrant in the nation.
Henry Lewis Gates said it soo well, 'Rights can never be taken for granted." I tell all people- If you can LEGALLY VOTE, get up, get out and GO VOTE.
anyone here from social studies class?
Yep
Yeah
I will never not vote in this system and game that they set up.💯🇺🇲🗽
I wonder why I can't access the transcript for this video; it helps us teachers to have them. : )
A very kind insightful American who is here to help people see what everyone sees, I absolutely enjoy watching him with a documentary and presentation. Not being black still causes me pause when white Americans are in so much denial. It is why I always hated that miserable cop show, no discernment nor restraint on officers in using wisdom and discretion plus all the crud regulations that cover their atrocities as an excuse for hate. They have never apologized and continue with arrogance. I can't get a tan or someone at a medspa thinks I can't be treated but if a naturally blond woman lays out in the sun she is treated as literally precious. Boston the south the west, down straight the center of America, we need to ask God for forgiveness. We stole people and used them, do many hurt people walking around feeling less than. Made in the image of God. Black Americans are strong loving giving people they are to be respected within their own communities and before everyone else.

It's funny how we don't tell the whole history of how we switch from Republican to Democrat and lost all of our rights I wish these so called activists would tell the entire story
Anyone who knows anything about history knows this. It's not a secret. Black people stayed loyal to Lincoln's party up until FDR.
@@africarib obviously alot of people don't know if there still voting for democrats
who here from ms young
Remember they all were Republicans
I wish this would have included that these were black republicans, and wht the democrats did to get them out of office.
Yup
They have a agenda
Before the 60’s and 70’s, republicans were considered the liberal party, democrats were conservatives. The principles of the parties switched. If slavery was still legal today, it would be the party fighting for the human rights of illegal immigrants that would be fighting for the end to slavery! Not republicans!
The Southern Strategy circa 1950 resulted in more alignment between a reconstruction era Democrat and a modern day republican.
who cares about republican v democrat its all corrupt
Why are you not telling us they was black Republicans. 1800 black Republicans. If not going to tell the whole story don't tell it at all
The 13th, 14th and 15th amendment's would never have been ratified if it were left up to the democrat party.
Republican party
