Is Somaliland an Independent Nation?

  • It is my understanding that Somaliland receives around five hundred tourists a year. We were three. But within a single day, street assaults over tattoos meant we were two. Then one.
Naturally, it was an extremely difficult place to film. I did my best with what I could.
That said, I had a unique and life-affirming visit and I wouldn't trade it for anything. Wonderful people helped me get this footage without asking for a single thing in return, and showed me kindness that one usually reserves for family. We met hundreds of educated, friendly, progressive humans, many of whom are international leaders their field. Everywhere is a spectrum, and in Somaliland we saw it all. Their work and their desire for freedom deserves recognition well beyond what it has received. A massive thanks to everyone who welcomed us and helped me film without disruption. You quite literally made this season possible.
As this is the first real video I've filmed entirely by myself, and among Kata's first edits, we're both pretty nervous. It's a sensitive topic. But she did a triathlon this morning and did her best ever, so I feel that's a good omen. As she always reads this stuff religiously, I'm gonna sneak a note to her in here: Congrats Kata! You're the fastest person of all the people.
Thanks for watching, all. Somaliland was a wild week for us. Hope you like what it produced.

These threats are coming from the somali diaspora in the united states and canada primarily. Keyboard warriors i wouldn't take them seriously. Somalis living in southern somalia don't really care that much if somaliland recieves it's international recognition, they have more important issues to deal with. It is those somali diaspora in north america who are spreading lies and propaganda to destabilize the republic of somaliland even today as i write this message. With the new partnership between somaliland and the u.s, Genel uk crude oil drilling and the berbera port the republic of somalia are hating on somaliland progress

I don't know Google Earth but in Google Maps, you see different depends on where are you connecting from. Search title "Google Maps is Different in Other Countries" by "Human Interests" in RUclips and see yourself. Also there are some laws and agreements between countries and Google itself; for example, couple years ago I could see cars in front of my house, I could even recognize whose car it is. I could clearly see roofs and terraces of buildings; but then something happened and now, I can't even see the housing estate I'm living in; it's all blurred and only shows you lines and street names, that's all. But if I use VPN and change my country, it's visible again. So Google is blocking and blurring Country X's satellite images only for Citizens of Country X; but it's all open to the rest of world. Never trust Google.

Not as a nation but as a region. Somaliland has been a region for many decades, and as a region *under* a state or several states it has been recognised in some forms, just not as an independant nation itself.
Something comparable, albeit with a much longer history of its use, would be how google earth shows Kurdistan as a region despite overlapping 4 nations. They arent recognising an independent Kurdish state because one does not exist, they are just showing the regional borders because they are relevant historically and geographically.

    • @plushie946

@@dr.zoidberg8666 at that point youd have a lot of drawing to do because theres hundreds of legitimate and (legally) illegitimate autonomous regions and nations around the world, few of which are recognised. Syria alone is debatably under 5 seperate controls, 1 of which is the state of Syria and the other is an autonomous region with direct democracy.
Then theres Iraq, which has the Kurdistan Regional Government, not a seperate nation but a heavily autonomous region. India has several areas that consider themselves independant. Hong Kong is labelled different on many up to date maps. Libya. Greece has some communities fully under anarchist control, and a lot of sympathy for anarchists in certain areas. Turkey itself doesnt control the mountains, neither does Iran. Israel and Palestine are marked incorrectly on most maps because most maps mark Palestine as the disputed borders rather than Israel, which is a bias in favour of Israel that is not backed up by international law or the UN, who use neutral maps that mark Palestinian territory seperate from Israeli occupied areas. Saudi Arabia is on the edge of balkanizing if they destabilise. Denmark and Canada both claim an island off Greenland. Technically speaking Canada and America should both be marked as occupiers and native tribes and nations should be marked as the legitimate holders of the land. Basically no political map is ever correct because theyre showing one political perspective. So i guess theyre simultaneously all correct and all wrong.

Because of the volatility of the region as a whole Somaliland tries to keep peace through dialogue. Somaliland would have been even more perfect had it had recognition. Its a hurdle that hampers its ability to help provide its people what they need to support a better economic opportunities and hope for better life. Also, the need to defend would have decreased and thus ability to be less concerned to threats to its people and their aspirations.

Nah Awi some times it’s better to part ways. Look at the state of Somalia right now, your country was artificially created by western powers, and it’s caused a lot of issues quite obviously, it’s made a country with a highly divided population that’s easy for us to continue to exploit (which I am against that exploitation but I am just one man who is very knowledgeable about my country’s actions) if Somalia had formed together under more natural circumstances (not necessarily ethnic lines or anything) then this issue wouldn’t exist, but because the west forced a bunch of people to live together who don’t want to live together, you get what we see today.

In school, they did teach me about the existance of Somaliland, but they told me that it was a autonomous part of Somalia and that it was a misconception that it was a independent country.

It isn't a country, the people charged, brainwashed the people in the north thinking that they are different. At the end of the day, they are Somalia doesn't matter if they get a country or not they are Somalis

Been scrolling through the comments and love to see everyone feels the same. You are one of my few real inspirations. You approach things in such a subjective, intelligent, and interesting manor. Something I have been wanting to ask is, who are your inspirations? Do they have youtube channels I can watch, books I can read, books about them? I want to see what kind of things bring you inspiration or push you to do better. What kind of things influenced you to become such a respectable person.

It's actually insane how we are acknowledging territories by gut feeling. The definition of a state is crystal clear: the land belongs to the entity who can enforce their laws in a given region.
Is taiwan part of china? - >Who takes taxes from that land?
Is somaliland part of Somalia? -> Can somalia enforce their laws in said territory?

    • @amoonomer232
      @amoonomer232 4 года назад +3

well Somalia can't enforce any law in Somaliland but they try by writing complains to UN, African union, and Arab union, and they fail LAMO. Also, NO one in the southern government including so called president can come to any somaliland territory leave alone collecting taxes.

LAMO are you serious? Somaliland president was in tukaraq itself so buhudle isn't even a conern. Also you can't compare president Muse who his guard is from Somaliland and can control everywhere to xaarmajo who is guarded by AMISOM in 2 km

Somaliland has come a long way to regain its independence and many have died for that cause. We will never allow any small minority to try and jeopardize the rights of the majority. For those so called “small clans” who may want unification with Somalia they should cross the border and live in Somalia!
