This piece was composed as an entry for a chamber music competition, played in piano-only transcription by a pianist who was either incompetent or drunk or both depending on which account you believe. It was not judged favorably. History has partially corrected this slight,. He laughs best who laughs last, I suppose, but this is a masterpiece.
Summer breezes at Livadiya...a ballet I wanted to choreograph to Rimsky-Korsakov's Wind and Piano Quintet in B-flat major. It is so beautiful! Makes me think of the lilacs at the Imperial residence!
James Levee seems they are playing it at a healthy allegro! But all the better for it. Have listened to a few versions on here- and none are as convincing. The piano writing in parts seems heavily influenced by Tchaikovsky's 1st Concerto - finale octave flourish etc... Love it.
For some reason the lady turning pages for Pletnev gives me the creeps. I imagine her being a clandestine Russian assassin and doing stuff like this as a cover. Delightful performance, btw.
Just right. I've heard the first movement played slower and it goes from lively and joyous to still-born. I probably wouldn't have listened to this twice if my first listening had been the plodding recording. Probably wouldn't have listened to it all the way through.
Hoy,de repente, quise volver a escuchar esta "pequenia maravilla" tan llena de frescura e inocencia!.-
Xxxxxtimes THX fir sharing ! Didn’t know the work at all ! So … the max !
Beautifully played! Neglected, lovely music, in the style of his opera, The Tale of the Tsar Sultan.

This ensemble sounds like it's fun! Joyous, lively, uplifting. Thanks for posting this, thanks to the players, and thanks to Maestro Rimsky-Korsakov!
Gorgeous interpretation ! Magical !

A lesser known masterpiece- i wonder if the program includes russian folklore and mysticism
Роскошное произведение, исполнение - выше всяких похвал. Перед Плетневым снимаю шляпу.

Per the score, the finale is marked Allegretto (vivace).

Final movement. Did Rimsky visit the Grand Canyon?

Is Pletnev sight-reading?
Squinting at the score sort of gives it away, but his performance id better than spot-on!
that flute.....
Never mind the flute! I'm looking for a second-hand bassoon!

Haha omg
that first movement is a wrist killer for the pianist. Very fast repeated chords and very few breaks.
It's not too bad actually. The finale, on the other hand, is tricky because of all the jumps
too fast
