This is the best tutorial for vectorizing hand letterings ! I got hang of this concept in the first go and now I am feeling like practicing more !!!! Thanks a bunch !
Easily the most helpful tutorial I’ve seen on anchor points, handles and “good practices”. Also, it was really helpful to see that the pros don’t always get it right during this stage and there’s a lot of trial-and-error to be expected. Thanks much!
For ages I was looking at tutorials using live trace and it never worked out well for me. As someone who is OCD this is exactly what I was looking for. Great technique and really helped me. Thanks so much!
You're very welcome, and I am the same, I could never use live trace for my lettering work because it simply doesn't do it any justice, it's not 100% accurate, or even close in all honesty! Im glad this tutorial was able to help you :D
I really appreciate how you broke parts of the letterforms down. I used to do each letterform which was truly awkward but your way makes more sense. Thanks for a wonderful tutorial!
I've seen lots of tutorials like this, but I consider this one as the most useful. Thank you so much! It motivates me a lot that someone as good as you also did not know how to do that once. Because a lot Illustrators are acting as if they were born with this skill ;) Thank you a lot, I am looking forward to the next video!
+Theresa X Thank you for this comment, it's always nice to read a supportive message like this and they don't come around all that frequently. I hope this tutorial helps you further expand your knowledge and skills within Illustrator :)
Thanks man!! I learnt so much more from you than I learnt from my illustrator lessons at design school. I've been struggling for a really long time with those awful and pointy anchor points, thanks for all your tips ;) Keep it up!!
Just wanted to say thanks for these tutorials you've made on vectoring type. You've made life so much easier and able to create my logo using some of your tips so thanks again.
5 years since this video has come out and it's still THE MOST RELEVANT training on how to victories type properly I have seen! (and I studied graphic design at uni lol). Question though... how do you decide where your anchor points are going to be? Do you just guess it, or is there a method?
Thank man, it’s great to know it’s still helping people 5 years down the line! And regarding the placement of the points, you place them on the outer-most points of the curves of you know what I mean? So where the curve reaches the furthest point. Let me know if that makes sense haha
Thanks so much for this! I've been trying to find tutorials on vectorizing type and this method has been the best one I've seen. Appreciate the time it took for you to put this together and I can't wait to try it out. :) keep up the good work
Omg I never knew you could use the align tool on guidelines, this has just saved me a ton of time and effort I usually waste calculating and manually aligning my guides with the ruler haha thanks! Also, your tutorials overall are very helpful and informative, keep up the good work!
Thank you this has really helped me connect the dots I just need to practice and train my eye now I know the key commands and the building blocks to problem solve the lettering process thanks! Nice one! :)
I'm on the same page man, I love the process of drawing images out & prepping them ready but the vectoring part for me seems more like a chore but after watching this video (and im sure im gonna watch it at least another 6 times) It's genuinely given my confidence to start to enjoy the process! P.S. the horizontal, vertical thing, I never knew! (Or maybe I just didn't pay attention enough in college) My anchor points were at like 36 degrees & what not so thank you hugely!
I think as another future tutorial, is to maybe teach how to cut into the letters, like if something is overlapping, how it would have like a cut or an insert to show that its above or below another part of the line/letter. But anyways thank you so much for this tutorial as it helped me in so many ways!
I'd love to see a tutorial on using a brushpen correctly. I'm aware that most of it is just daily training but I'm really struggling with pressure and some other stuff. Just some little tips and tricks would be very much appreciated.
Well I was looking for something like this so long time ago, I've been watching several videos but I swear and you can trust me It's the first time I feel so convinced and I feel everything is clear and very well explained, since my english is not so good I apologize for the mistakes, but anyway you have a like, and a sure suscription to your channel from me, and you can be sure I'll be checking your next and others videos C: Thanks a lot :)
Amazing. thank you so much! I rarely comment but this is really an informative and well-made video. I'm going to try it right now as I am really tired of using live trace for type. Thanks!
+Artful Energies ahh yes, I have seen a few people doing it that way actually, I suppose it's just whats faster/easier for you, of course go with whichever way is better for you :)
Another way that you can do the same thing but faster is this: 1) Open the file in photoshop. 2) Remove from the image that underlying line that is unnecessary for the logo 3) Use the "Threshold" option in Image -> Adjustments -> Threshold 4) Choose the required threshold 5) Delete all the white from the image and make sure there is no background and also delete any kind of imperfections... 6) Save the image as BMP (bitmap) 7) Open it in Illustrator 8) Select the image and go to Window -> Image Trace 9) Choose "outlines from the menu" 10) Choose "black and white" 11) Choose "Silhouettes" 12) Click "Trace" 13) Select the image again and go to "Options" -> "Image Trace" -> "Expand" 14) Now select the image (now it's no longer an image but its a vector) and go to the "Pencil Tool" click and hold until a menu comes up and select the "Smooth Tool" and apply it on your vectored image 15) Now you can zoom in and re-touch it with your Pen Tool, Anchor Point Tool and Curvature Tool (or any other tool). And voila! You have the result without going into all that hustle :) If this helped you, drop me a like! I doesn't offer anything to me, but it gives me the satisfaction knowing that you guys found that helpfull :) )
Nice tutorial, thank you for sharing it with us! One more thing, if you are planning on doing some more technical tutorials like this... then do not hesitate! We really appreciate them! ;)
Interesting technique, I think I will try this out the next time! :) Very good tutorial, I hope you will do some more in the future!! And the result is just awesome!
Thanks for making this - brilliant and so cool - would you be willing to appear on a show we are developing? Behind the Curtain LIVE! ??? Thanks Maker !!!
Best way to get a drawn image into illustrator is to download the app called adobe capture. Use the 'shapes' and it vectorises it for you and then sends it straight onto your desktop and opens it up ready to go. Saves so much time..
Would it be easier to do online one stroke and bump it up to necessary width for it to be similar weight, then outline and tweak outer shaper in the same style you're doing?
How do you know if the handles should be horizontal or vertical? There were instances when you had two horizontals or two verticals next to each other.
Hey man I'm confused on your method for breaking up the bottom signature line, like you bring the f to the front increase stroke expand it, then pen tool areas of it then pathfinder I thought maybe? Could you clarify the method there Cheers
Hey man , im just starting with photoshop if you could, could you please do a tutorial on cropping images well cutting them out to make a PSD ? or in other words Image with no background kind of how you do in your speed arts thanks man good work
Hey, I need a bit of help. I followed your tutorial and when I click, a point appears but when I hold down shift, drag it then let go the green line to create the second point does not appear. Why is that?
how do you change the color of the line that follows your pentool around? mine is dark gray and its so irritating because its hard to see what im doing :(
why holding alt&shift when you can just select that one of those circle and move but direct selection tool and switching back and forth? what am i missing here?
FFS FINALLY! Someone who can explain this is a clear, quick, sensible manner! Thank you brother.
THANK YOU ! Your technic using only vertical and horizontal handles is the most useful tip I've ever seen ! A REAL REVELATION ! Thanks !!
This is the best tutorial for vectorizing hand letterings ! I got hang of this concept in the first go and now I am feeling like practicing more !!!! Thanks a bunch !

Wonderfully orchestrated.
Thank you. Once you know it seems so simple, but it makes such a big difference. !
I could be wrong, but I would click all around with the anchor points, then go back and adjust. It goes quicker for me. Thanks for sharing.

this helped me a lot, thanks so much.
Nice! You're very talented. :)
Thanks So Much For An Fantastic Tutorial!
Don't click alt shift to tweak the pin points wright. Just click the pin points easy to get used to.
You mentioned when making type face what were you referencing for the details on if you were making a type face?
love the accent! thanks for the tips!
I like how he says it looks really bad at the beginning even though it actually looks great
Thanks for the tutorial, dude. I kind of got a better idea on how to use handles now.
Would it be easier to do online one stroke and bump it up to necessary width for it to be similar weight, then outline and tweak outer shaper in the same style you're doing?
very handy to know, thanks so much
Love it dude! Thank you.
Can you tell me what program are you using for recording the speed art videos ?
How do you know if the handles should be horizontal or vertical? There were instances when you had two horizontals or two verticals next to each other.
cool video Ste.
Great tutorial. Thanks a lot ;)
Thank you, do you have tutorials on calligraphy?
Hey man I'm confused on your method for breaking up the bottom signature line, like you bring the f to the front increase stroke expand it, then pen tool areas of it then pathfinder I thought maybe? Could you clarify the method there
Cheers
Hey man , im just starting with photoshop if you could, could you please do a tutorial on cropping images well cutting them out to make a PSD ? or in other words Image with no background kind of how you do in your speed arts thanks man good work
Great tutorial! Thanks a lot!
Thank you! Very helpful!
Thanks great tutorial
when you put down an anchor point how do you have that line that keeps following instead of having to click to get the line to appear?
Thanks you, so much. I inspired by your work
Thanx man.. U doin great job ! appreciate it. :)
Is there a way to export your image to show the bezier handles or is a screencapture the only way? Thanks!
Nice work!...now if I could only sketch 😭
author, great!
But question, why my lines is bold only in minimap, not in space, i tried to use all the options, no reason.
Hi! What can I do if my hand lettering is made by watercolors or or ink or other stuff witch has shades, gradients ecc.?
Hey, I need a bit of help. I followed your tutorial and when I click, a point appears but when I hold down shift, drag it then let go the green line to create the second point does not appear. Why is that?
You are holding shift, or shif+alt?
how do you change the color of the line that follows your pentool around? mine is dark gray and its so irritating because its hard to see what im doing :(
why holding alt&shift when you can just select that one of those circle and move but direct selection tool and switching back and forth? what am i missing here?
As someone who do modern turkish caligraphy this method is a nightmare 😂😂😂 but thanks alot for the good quality explanations.
