NEVER-BEFORE-SEEN mind-blowing footage of His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche debating with his students. Watch Rinpoche debate with such passion, clarity in logic, sharpness and quickness, and ultimately, it is Rinpoche's compassion in helping the students realize their own shortcomings and overcome it.
This is real guru teaching real spirituality.
The "aggressiveness", the hand slapping is to throw the debater off balance, to train them to focus their minds and regardless of the distractions in front of you, be able to answer the question in an accurate and convincing manner. The hand slapping is also to provoke the person answering, for them to become aware of their ego which manifests during the debate (in the form of, for example, the need to win, as opposed to learning). This ego impedes their ability to answer clearly, thus the exercise also trains them to be aware of this and to subdue this.

This felt so confrontational for me in the beginning. But as I watched and listened I realised this is ultimate compassion. Or true unconditional love. Not in the corny airy way but being truthful with someone with no conditions. It actually gives the individual the opportunity to improve themselves by shining light or awareness on their own blind spots. If you are deceiving yourself they are giving you the memo to realise that and that to me is an ultimately compassionate act. But in my culture that has been seen as being mean for some reason… where as telling the person a lie and saying “no you are just trying you will get there, life has been hard for you don’t worry about it”. That is seen as compassionate when it is actually encouraging the continuity of your own ignorance

While I do not agree with Rinpoche's stance on a certain protector, I absolutely love and deeply appreciate his teaching technique in this video.
As practitioners, we often think that when we sit in front of our Lama or Rinpoche, take notes diligently, and do our practice, we some how "got it." Tsem Rinpoche's questioning reminds us that we must still examine ourselves and our Dharma. We must still question ourselves and those around us.

The whole debate is him saying are you trying to practice Dharma.
    My answer is this:
II only try when it doesn't hurt. but it does hurt. It hurts because I am trying to get an effect when the cause isn't there. It works if I dont add painful thoughts. But I add painful thoughts
I want the effect because life is short.
    Consequential reasoning
    -----------------------------------------
I do not understand the results of actions are definate.
    I do not have faith
Why am I here if I dont have faith?
    Response
    ---------------
Because I can see somethings Buddha said are true but not others
Because I can see that familiarity is the solution
Because I believe that I will see everything Buddha said is true because he does not lie
    Consequential reasoning
    -----------------------------------------
if Buddha does not lie why do you not believe your actions will produce the effects
basically Im digging a hole for myself!!!

Does Tsem Rinpoche debate often & if so is it possible to publish written transcripts on the blog?
Examples of how the monks debate are very rare as they all debate in Tibetan, yet it is a very big part of what they do. I feel if we were able to learn the structure...although it is hard to organise a debate, we can use what we learn to debate ourselves in meditation, challenge and question ourself.I feel I cannot use this video as the audio is not clear. I hope Tsem Rinpoche or other monks who debate will provide an example published online that we can all benefit from

    • @wanwaimeng
      @wanwaimeng 7 лет назад

Yes the ultimate reason to practice Buddhism is become awake so that, we don't suffer anymore nor cause suffering for others. In the Lamrim, the small scope refers to the motivation to practice is to have better future lives, as with a birth in the higher realms we might have a chance to carry on practicing, much less chances or zero if we have rebirth in the lower realms. Then the medium scope is for the motivation of those working for self liberation, and lastly the great scope for people working to be a Buddha.

Hi Goldy. All movements portrayed by Rinpoche here during the debate has meaning. When Rinpoche asks the responder question, at the end of each question he claps his right hand down onto his left hand. The right hand represents compassion amd altruistic intention and the left hand represents wisdom. Bringing the two hands signifies that it's through the combination of compassion and wisdom that one can eliminate the wrong view from one's mind. Hope this helps. Hi Timo Arnaldo,
That's a gesture performed during a traditional Tibetan debate. The right hand represents the practice of compassion and the left hand represents wisdom. When the two hands come together, it represents wisdom and compassion (method) combining.
Normally, the gesture is performed when standing up so the hand gesture is accompanied by a foot stomp. When the foot stomps, that represents the door to rebirth in the lower levels being shut.
Then, the Challenger presses down with the left arm (wisdom), representing the door to all rebirth being pressed shut. The right hand is used to raise up the mala (rosary) around the left arm. This represents our practice of compassion becoming successful in raising all suffering beings out of cyclical existence (death and rebirth).
      Thank you

36:38 I use the Dharma like a survivalist tossed in a Jungle use his swiss army knife to survive, can Dharma make your life easier? most certainly BUT only if you give back to the community will you reap the benefits, Dharma's not going to shower you with gold from the sky of you sitting there doing nothing...
Dharma is like an infinite tool / swiss army knife, the best in fact.... however once our life comes to an end, we too have to let these go or we cannot exit the 6 realms because clinging onto the Dharma then is a form of greed, at the very least become Arahat or Bodhi when we leave... and continue the right path towards Buddhahood.

Yes, we may have abandon the boat once we have crossed the river, otherwise the boat is a burden on land. It is not dharma that rewards, the dharma is the medicine, the dharma is what brings us closer to the realization of the reality we are in. Dharma does not reward or punish, we reap what we sow, which is karma, if we created good karma or merits, better things will happen for us.

our 5 poisons: Greed, Anger/Hate, idiocracy, pride, suspicion get in the way of our own learning.

Jive Lamotta That’s the way Gelug monks debate on Buddhist philosophy. There’s meaning to every gestures in it, even the clapping. The clap signals to the respondent that it’s time for them to answer and they must make sure that they keep focusing and not be distracted. A way to train the mind to be calm always. Though it seems pretty entertaining to the others and especially us watching it, it is actually a serious matter and an important part of training for these monks.
