- 5:00 am launch this morning with the intention of trying to catch some akule. With the full moon I figured that the pelagic bite would only be on right before or right after sunrise (minor bite was 6:17-8:17am, sunrise 6:14am). I didn’t have any luck finding akule, go figure because the moon didn’t set until after the sunrise (probably too much light). I found a chunk of reef at 100 ft and hung out until sunrise. Within a few minutes of sunrise I started marking lots of opleu. I caught 5 and then headed for deeper water with a live bait out. I started noticing dolphins all over the place seemingly going in different directions. I figured the fishing would be dead with them in the area. I was starting to think that I had drowned my bait from trolling too fast. Turning around and retracing my track to reel in my bait (less pressure on bait) was enough slack to entice a 33lb shibi to scoop it up in 160ft. Right before the hit I marked a small school of bait. Bait 2 was bit off by either a shark or a kaku. Reeling in the slack line I noticed another school of opleu in 140ft and caught 2. After dunking bait 3 and while pedaling away (with the bail open) I heard a large splash about 20ft behind me. I was thinking oh shit a dolphin is about to go all Guy Fieri on my bait. Well it didn’t and it probably wasn’t a dolphin. The line was flying off my spool unusually fast because a 12 lb shibi was on the other end in 151ft. With the shibi almost on the surface next to the kayak it started going crazy and out of the corner of my eye I saw a 7ft shark about 15ft below. Wanting to let the shibi run I opened the secondary drag, the tension in the rod caused the spool to backlash (I should have opened the bail). Somehow my braid got tangled in my bail with about 70ft of line out. With my line tangled the drag was 100% locked and I almost lost my rod over board at least twice while the shibi desperately ran from the shark. After untangling my line I reeled in the remains figuring there was no chance the shibi had evaded the shark. Miraculously the shibi had survived and I quickly brought it on board. After that crazy mess I caught and released two kawa kawa (5 and 7lbs) in 152ft. With 2 more now dead opelu I dropped one to the bottom with no weight. After 5 minutes an uku (presumably) grabbed it and fought hard as I tried to drag it off the bottom. It became apparent after 15 seconds that it was being chased when it grew a couple hundred pounds. The rain held off the entire morning and with it finally bearing down I headed in at 8:30am. Good short trip with luck on my side.

Scary music in the beginning I thought you were going to hook Godzilla. Then legit suspense when your fish was scared and a shark was lurking and then your line got stuck and the fish was running from the shark. I was saying "No, don't put your arm in the water that's how they always get you". But you did it and happy ending (not gay). I'll remember the popcorn next time. Great video!
Addicted to watching your videos man. Don't ever stop, it helps pass the time.
off the east coast of South Africa we often get yellowfin and dolphins hunting together.. if you get a popper into moving dolphins, you're almost guaranteed a hookup. great videos
I dig your groove, I fish very similar just different ocean. On days I can’t be on the water, your channel is my sanity 😂 both diy’s and fishing. Love you’re including the species, really helpful. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
No luck my friend, blessing. Another nice video, I'm going to start what you are doing ,be in the water at 4 or 5am and back to the harbor at 9. Awesome catch and the story! Maaannn, I'm speechless. Be safe and keep it coming.aloha
Hey Eddie I fish the bite times. Look up major minor bite times for where you fish. It is based on the solar lunar cycle which influences the tides. I have mine set to barbers point, the times vary a few minutes place to place on Oahu. An example is tomorrow the major bite time is 8:21am to 10:21am. Catch bait and then fish in the bite time

On the app I use it says 8:05 to 10:35. I guess it close enough. I going tomorrow night bottom fish and try to catch some akule then I'll try to troll around a live akule on the major time hopefully get some yellow guy, lol.
i would love to do that but i dont hv money to buy a kayak so for now i enjoy watching u, big thx
great action for such a short time fishing!
Thanks David!, I think most of it is attributed to the tide and lunar cycle. I think I fished the minor bite time in this video. Just google major minor bite times for your area.
That shibi! Its a shame there wasn't a camera down there watching it put the moves on that shark! I assume at times a dolphin is going to get hooked up, what is the right thing to do when that unfortunate event occurs? Also Thanks for the story in the description.
I think the dolphins are too smart to eat my bait. If they do they would probably break the line, otherwise cut the line close to the hook. The hooks rust out in 2 or 3 weeks.
i enjoy when i watching your channel .
Now I know Hawaii is one of the richest fishing ground for guys like us...I thought its the Philippines but so many people here plus China is catching fish in the West Phillippine Sea. LoL. Greetings from Cebu.
Hey! I noticed you use the sunshield on your fish finder. Im wanting to get one for mine but im not sure if it'd get in the way of the face cover I use for it.
At least on this fish finder the cover did not interfere with the sun shield. I need to get a another sunshield for my current fish finder, although I mostly just need it as a splash guard.

I wonder how wise it is to have your feet in the water when it's full of tuna blood!
The fish finder he has will show that something big is nearby. He fishes alot and knows to be safe
Nice video! I like your choice of fishing rods. Use same here. Affordable and tough. Trying to decide on which Hobie to buy. Why did you go with the revolution instead of the outback? I've noticed that a lot of Hawaii kayak dudes use revolutions. Here in SE Florida they tend to use Outbacks. Any thoughts? Thanks.
I have never used the outback, I like the revolution for speed. The outback is more stable from what I hear, but in my opinion it is the person on the kayak that ultimately capsizes it. I like to keep my deck as streamlined as possible, you have more room on the outback to spread your gear out. The only downside I have had with the revo is not a ton of room for a large fish bag. My bag is 5ft long, if I catch something bigger than that I will just head in. Guys in hawaii use the entire hobie line. I have an older adventure island but it is a huge pain to move around and so I mostly fish off the revo.
Thanks for the feedback. I think like you do; revo is faster and more streamlined. No space to bring stuff you don't really need. Thanks
What do you carry in your life vest?
What setup do you use to catch your opelu and akule? Some kind of sabiki rig?
Sooooo, I'm guessing that you eat a lot of tuna?
LOL, wife is tired of eating fish. I give all but about 2 meals worth of fish away.

Hi!! I'm so interested to what rod and reel you're using in fishing can you be kind enough to give me some information???
Good content. The head cam is a bit annoying., as well as the chronic FF. More face time and story line please. Great channel.
