- In this video we discus heating a pond. Is it necessary? Do fish benefit from a heated pond? Do you need to keep ice off a pond? What does a deicer do and how does it differ from an electric inline water heater? We answer all these questions and more in this video.
For more information, or to purchase a de-icer or water garden winterization kit see our website www.everything...
I live in Edmonton, Alberta , Canada where we routinely get -35 to -40 Celcius in the peak of winter. My wife and I have a 5000 L pond with 16 Koi and a small army of Rosie reds. The fish never leave the pond. In the winter, we cover the pond with 2x4 and 1" rigid foam insulation + a simple tarp. The temperature in maintained with a 1000 Watts cattle water heater that is thermo switched to turn on between 0C and 5C. The pond stays covered for 5 months. All pumps are turned off including the filter ( no need in the winter) and UV light. The only pump we maintain on is a small 1/2 " with a home made venturi that helps feed O2 in the water. Once the snow falls, the insulation is such that plants like day lilies, cat tails and water lilies grow in the 1" of air space. The fish feed on bottom stuff and the occasional food ( we built a hatch door).
Cool you gave me some ideas for my tilapia pond outside here in Ottawa
Wow thanks for the info!
Good idea. Thanks from England. 👍🏻
Very sensible - I was tempted to heat but see now that it's unnecessary (in my case) and (potentially) expensive
Glad we could help :)
I have a 1100 Gal pond with tropical fish. Oscars,Parrot Fish, Arrowana. In the winter the pond might drop to mid 60s. Will a Deicer bring it up over 70?
Thanks. Short and to the point.
Glad we could help! :D
What do I do if I want to keep tropical fish in a 50 gallon pond outside
U can heat your pond by using the grounds heat during the winter. Easy too do. Matter a fact I am planning on doing it this summer and I'll record it all and updates just to show. I will have both above and below pond in one.
I live in Florida and keep my African Cichlids outdoors in my pond, would a combination heater/ deliver help to maintain my water temperature to at least 65 degrees? Also, is it best to cover the pond with a light plastic to keep in the heat?
i live in a area that drops to -50 in the winter should i heat my koi pond?
what about fancy goldfish?
I'm so happy for her...🙂🐶❤🐶🙂
Does the De-icer cost alot of money for the electrical like the heater? And if so how do i minimize the cost?
It gets cold here in Missouri and I want to have bass and I think they need the heater. What do you recommend and let me know if I don’t need them
So my bubbler and fountain breaking the ice from the middle is probably enough in the UK. 🤞
Hello! so we have a pond outside our house we live in Florida. should we still buy a deicer or is it ok without anything?
Hello Norma, you'd only need a de-icer to keep your pond ice free. If your pond won't ice over then you will not need one :)
@@everythingponds Thank you!
can you put chiclids on pond?
Hey thanks for the vid, i have tanks that are insulated, some are not. I am looking to keep fish needing temp of 24-28.C. Im thinking of investing in a wind turbine, to give power to the heaters, Do you think this would work? or is a good idea? x
sir you have any ideas..
how to menten a water temperature in transportation like in pickup 2000 litter water
This is my first time having a pond in my yard and my first winter. I'm nervous my fish will die but watching some of the videos do help soothe that worry. I find a lot of videos that talk about winterizing the pond, but none that mention what do do with the pond plants I currently have in the water. Should I take them out? Leave them? What will happen to the fish if I leave them? When's the latest I should take them out to not disturb the fish? Also, I took the waterfall out (out of fear the hose would freeze and the pump would burn out). But now the water is not being filtered. I don't know how else to filter the pond. I put an aerator in it's place to still add oxygen. Will the fish survive if the water is not being filtered? This first winter will surely be a big learning experience.
If you have hardy goldfish don't worry about them. Plants do make waste in the water. Leave them in especially now .Get a heater and a air pump . I personally have 3 goldfish 17 inches long . This year I made it bigger and deeper. Leaving in Chicago it does get very cold but fish do fine in winter.
depends on the plants, water hyacinth and water lettuce seem to be tropical plants that are treated as annuals (fish em out and compost / trash / buy new next year) some others you trim the bits and let them sit in the pond seems (still researching not yet overwintered a pond)
Found this because I am trying to see if our turtles will need heat? I am in Southern California, warmer weather here, but in the house they need quite a bit of light and heat and even here they don't get that amount outside.
We're not experts on turtles so I wouldn't want to pretend to know. I would contact the person you bought the turtles from to see what they require for heat. I'm sure different types of turtles require different things.
I live in India..during winters avg temp during winters is nearly 12-14 celcius (where i live ) and the lowest it goes to 3-4 celcius (coldest days..nearly 15 days of winter)..i have 3 turtles..and i am planning to add some fishes in my newly constructed pond..my question is..do i need to worry about warming/temperature ..and shift my fishes and turtles inside..or i can leave them in the pond..?
Hello Ashutosh, thank you for your comment. To get the best advice for your breed of turtle, in your location, please consult the company that you purchased your turtles from. Different species of both fish and turtles have different temperature requirements. A rule of thumb is to never allow the ice to freeze over in a pond that is housing creatures. As always, the safest way to ensure your critters are warm and happy is to bring them inside - although it may not be necessary. Further research on your particular breed is necessary.
you know that in biofloc system we need to culture bacteria which require at least 20 D. Celsius to survive which in turn control ammonia etc. so how can we maintain the 20 D.C temp. in winter. please recommend.
They won't eat thus the waste will break down under the water and exchange.
What would u recommend I do I live in Chicago so it does get super cold here sometimes
Hello, thank you for message. If you believe there's a chance your pond will freeze, then we recommend getting a de-icer. To learn more, visit: www.everything-ponds.com/fish-pond-heaters.html
I live in Chicago as well get a de ~icer and a pump that come with 2 air stones. Fish should be good.
what does it cost to heat a pond if you are using solar power?
you would need a large amount of solar to produce enough wattage So I guess the answer is the cost is free once the panels are installed. However, you would have to pay the price of installing a large solar system with batteries first.
Can't u hook up one of those machines to a small solar system?
Hello Jonathan, yes, if you have a reliable solar system you can. The problem occurs if the solar system runs out of power. Frequent temperature changes are not ideal for supporting an ecosystem.
Sir,I have pond 364000 Thousend letter water winter time how to i make temp there 20To 25 degree!
Hello Mohammed, we do not sell any pond heaters at this time. If you need to maintain a certain temperature for your fish over the winter you may want to consider bringing them indoors.
@@everythingponds thank you Sir I will think
I have a turtles , gold fish and koi fish in a outside 700 gallons pond , do I need a heater ?
You need to keep an area of your pond ice free to allow for gas exchange. To learn more, visit: www.everything-ponds.com/fish...
@@everythingponds thank you 😊
Lol I have african cichlids in my pond so a heater is required lol this guy speaks as if people keep cold watered fish in ponds only
Sorry but my Tiger Oscar who requires above 65° F needs a heater even in California during winter
Tilapia need heat because they die if the temp starts getting down below 70°
They are called stock tanks not stocking tanks.
I have too heat my pond because I have Exotics.
Who much this heater
Hello Muhammad, thank you for your comment. We sell de-icers and they range from $50-$60 depending on size. To view the product follow this link www.everything-ponds.com/pond-de-icer-perfect-climate-deluxe.html. Thanks!
Don't use a heater. If the heater stops the water will get cold fast and fish will suffer from shock. I did it and almost lost all 6 of my koi.
@@robertcecil5921 Oh my! So sad :-( Sorry for your loss.
How it's work can you please give us video
Hello Anishka, thank you for the comment. What exactly do you require more details about? The heater or the deicer? We have an information page that goes into more detail. You can find that page here www.everything-ponds.com/fish-pond-heaters.html. Hope this helps!
