How to Use the Cafeteria

- This tutorial is one of five tutorials made for the students of Douglas MacArthur Kindergarten Academy. The majority of children at the Academy do not speak English and come from refugee and immigrant families. The Academy wanted to make the transition into kindergarten easier for these families and students. Working with the school principal and teachers, we developed the idea to create video tutorials that the students can watch at the beginning of school to become accustomed to the rules of the Academy. The five topics of the tutorials consist of:
1. How to Use the Cafeteria
2. How to Stand in Line
3. Going to Recess
4. How to Use the Bus
5. How to Use the Restroom
My roles included Writer, Director, Director of Photography and Editor.

Not gonna lie these teachers seem so strict like she talks in one tone of voice and it just seems like scary how like you’re sitting there in silence for five minutes at least do two minutes 😊

She is strict I can tell because if u see the teachers face it looks strict
And she just chucks the food away and when she says no talking time her tone gets stricter

My school makes us be quite for 2 mins but when our lunch lady’s get mad at us they do 6👍
I think that it's sweet to involve the kids in the production of the video, because this video was meant for them to watch and learn from. Made by the students for the students is the best way to go.
In the UK we have different options of food. Healthy and non-healthy(in primary/elementary school that I went to).

I wish my school was like it because there were always so many food fights and the teacher always was prepared to give out detentions, so I always eat my lunch with my friends in the school library to avoid getting involved with those crazy food fights

In my country we eat in our classroom on our school desk next to one of our classmates so no matter what you most likely always eating next to someone and people mostly bring their own lunchbox I feel like it is way better then eating in a cafeteria room also there is less people cause it’s one classroom so it is easier for people who don’t like crowded places

I eat in my classroom, when I was a kid. I live USA. The school, I went to was a Christian school. We got to eat our lunch in our classroom, in our own desk. We’re done eating. We could talk and moved around. Then we had recess after lunch.

Lol, this was how it was like when I was in elementary one point until I moved schools in fourth grade. Lets just say I had one of those classes from 4th grade until i moved schools in 9th grade again that were not entirely there.
Though the difference was the fact we threw our own tray of food away and stack it by the dish washer area instead of letting the teachers do it for us.
Meanwhile the school I moved to in 4th grade literally fed pre packaged foods packaged for us, and then microwaved it before serving it to us.
Even the cheese burgers were microwaved. It was nasty.
Eventually they started cooking there own food, but it still came out bad because the food was either frozen still, or it was rotten.
@chrisc.3476 I graduated in 2021, lol. Thankfully I don't have to deal with that anymore.
When I was a lunchroom aide we taught the children the responsibility of cleaning up after themselves to help support the custodians so we showed them how to throw their tray away and have atleast one helper to assist wiping the table with the lunchroom aide they are then given hand Sanitizer for the ones who did the extra help in wiping tables. We also had an older child in the mornings to draw out a menu for today’s breakfast and lunch items they really enjoyed and and actually felt responsible

Same like I’m 10 and my school has a thing called lunch time helpers and there is three weeks and I’m in week two now it’s week three and I have to wait two more weeks to do my job like only ks2 can do it the school does it because to teach bigger kids to be a little indipendent before they go to secondary

The lunchroom was always scary for me sometimes because mostly we would go up to 0 volume when we get too loud but like the one thing is its like your break so like you're allowed to talk because it's your break time I guess?

I remember we had to throw away our own trash on the trays. I also remember how loud it was in the room because so many kids were in their talking and the adults would tell at the kids through the mic to stop talking and the cafiteria had an echo. I hated it.
Same here hated it too my last Elementary school was bad enough they put a traffic light thing that measures the sound in the Lunchroom goes green , yellow and red if it green means good yellow getting loud red means wow way too loud then it lets out a siren noise off the siren can be heard from the office its so loud if it goes off enough times the Principal will come in if she came cause of the siren going off its not a good thing we lose recess time or lose recess mostly yeah my class kissed recess goodbye a few times.

When I was in school we had a lot more food on the tray also we had styrofoam trays and a milk not juice
Also my teacher in every grade including kindergarten let us walk to the cafeteria by are self with us in pairs of two we threw the trays away and went outside to the playground so we could have recess I guess since covid things have changed
I don’t even go to the cafeteria during lunch. I go to the library and just do work and eat an apple and a snack for lunch. School ends 2 hours later anyways. Once period 4 ends everyone just runs.

I recall we all received a reusable (washable) plastic timber for milk or juice, metal was able silverware, and durable (was able, reusable) plastic tray. Seems like the only waste to toss should be uneaten food or drink. We had nice lunchroom ladies like these too - and tasty food like this ! 😀
When I was in school the government donated surplus food for the lunch program. This included vegetables, etc., from the price support programs run by the Dept of Agriculture. I hated the food at the time, but looking back it was really good stuff ... I just didn't like hardly anything back then. Nowadays, it's all junk food, and the surplus program is long since gone.

My school lunch expectations: 2 or 3 classes per lunchtime. Kindergarten is 11:40 First grade iz 1:30? 2nd grade is 12:40. Then we get our trays and get our food. We get the milk or other drink second. Then sauce next and then where your class is, go to either Red, Yellow, Blue Orange or green table with your assigned seats. Then eat foer 20 minutes. Then if you want extra lunch or drink or sauce you make a line for extras. After you got your xtras eat it. Packed lunch is a bit easier but same thing. After you have very little talking time you have 10 minutes of silence. Then every day it is a different person to be the trash man/woman. Then we put our heads down and wait for our teachers. When our teachers come our lunch aide tells do we have a good/bad lunch and then we have separate exits from the lunchroom. 216 goes rhe new way we go in the lunchroom and 218 goes to the old way. Fun facts: We have strawberry milk sometimes. Its rare when it comes to drinking thit in the lunchroom. 2. Our lunchroom dosent have that much posters. What does that mean?? 3. We sometimes get disgusting lunch like "Todays menu is A turkey burger with beans??" Its too disgusting They have better lunch than me. 4. We have pizza every Friday but its rectangle. Bruh why do i want to eat this... 5 is we do nout have recyclable trays. Every time we dirty up the trays and we finish trays we throw them away! This polluts earth. 6. 218 is always the problen! They mess up all 2nd grade silence and ruins it by TALKING. We have another day of silence bc of dat. Last fact is lunch lady is always fun! I have the luciest lunchroom exept for fact 2 and 3.

We don’t have cafeterias in elementary schools. It’s either bring lunch from home or emergency lunch. And we eat where we want to in the gym where all the lunch tables are set up.
My elementary school served Subway, Dominos and Wienerschnitzel for lunch. The school had a contract with this 🇲🇽 restaurant down the street too that supplied us with yummy food. As for milk and juice we were served from gallons from big name brands into metal cups like in prison 😂 I don’t know why our school did it. Either it was to save cash or it was incentivized by fast food corporations to get us addicted to their food 😂 this was a bad area of SoCal mind you.

Yeah I wouldn’t be complaining lol. There were times where our school would give us two hard scoops of macaroni and cheese with milk and that was it. Raw fish sticks, and undercooked chicken. Y’all seemed pretty lucky to me, especially with not having to pay for those lunches

We had Mrs. Griest she was a mean teacher, use to punish us for anything. She was a 1st grade teacher. She use to turn the light OSS in the closet and lock us in there until she remembered she had put us there.

This one time when I was in 6th grade, some folks were NOT behaving themselves in the lunchroom. The teachers were pissed at us, and made us spend ALL of recess sitting down. In my opinion, that was VERY unfair because I did ABSOLUTELY NOTHING! I kept my mouth shut the ENTIRE time.
When I was in elementary school, the lunchroom supervisor wasn’t a teacher, she was an aide. She was a true example of what a Karen is.

In my school you come in if ur pack lunch u just go and sit but there is different tables for different year groups so the you go for ur lunch u only get the food u can choose if u want bread with it and only water as a drink then when you finish you empty your tray and put it on top of the other trays the spoon or fork also in a silver box then you go to a table with loads of fruits jelly or yogurt and you choose which one to take you can also repeat

Man here in the UK it’s a lunch hall and for lunch you go outside and play whilst nursery reception and year 1 and 2 go in for lunch then when they are finished they go outside and then all the other year groups go inside for lunch in order from year 3 all the way to year six and then inside are trolleys with you lunch boxes but if you’re school dinner you up to the kitchen you tell them what you are like jacket potato main which is like a meat option and veg which is a vegetarian option then sit down wherever you want eat up then go back outside. Took me 10mins to write this
Why should these kids have to do everything accordingly. They are perfectly able to do these things on their own without a teacher telling them what to do in the cafeteria. Lame rules

What happens if I put in the wrong number does someone else get charged twice ?
This is so weird to me, because in middle school we have alot of fruit and veggie options and we also have a fridge like thing that we can choose sodas, Sparkling waters, Or like normal water or orange juice, Smoothies, And we also have a grill line incase we don't want like the regular food options, In the grill line there is, Usually a type of potato like tater tots or potato wedges, And theres like cheeseburgers or stuffed crust pizza.

At my elementary school we walk down the hallway sometimes going upstairs if your talking about 2nd 3rd 4th grade in when we got to the cafeteria we would go through the doors when we got in we got our food first and got to choose what we wanted when we were done we had to get a fruit then we got our milk ( chocolate milk/white milk) When we got done we put in our number we didnt have them for i belive 2 years but now we do then we had to sit with our class only it we only had 20 minutes vut if yiu count the other stuff it would be like 16 minutes to eat when we got done we throw it away and line up waiting for our teacher.

In the cafeteria at school and I was talking to my friends they had these big rocks, and they made me sit on those for like the entire recess but if I was lucky, I would get like five minutes of recess come on foothills (that’s the school I go to)

It's a video quite current apparently and having food and ecological awareness that we have, there are many things that call my attention.
The use of straw, totally unnecessary. A brick of chocolate milk or juices, with the amount of sugars it has, instead of water. Burgers and nuggets. And to finish those industrial sauces. And all that waste generated, also unnecessary, having the possibility of using everyday tableware.
I don't know if these school menus are still a reality or if they have changed. Perhaps that's so assimilated by that society that my comment will seem out of place or fussy.
Food is part of education and appreciating the natural taste of food sometimes takes a process. Healthy cooking doesn't mean putting four boiled vegetables without further processing. Healthy food is also "enjoyable" if prepared by combining properly, along with spices and more visually appealing.
