Over 114 killed as mass student protests sweep Bangladesh

- Bangladesh is under a strict 'shoot at sight' curfew this weekend following clashes between police and demonstrators that have left more than a 114 people dead.
Internet and mobile services have been blocked since Thursday as the authorities seek to quell the unrest.
Protests started a few weeks ago, with students venting their anger about a policy which reserves a third of government jobs for relatives of those who fought for Bangladesh's independence from Pakistan in 1971.
Warning, this report contains distressing images.
How much blood does Hasina want?
There is no account of how many hundreds of people were killed in 3/4 days.

The report did not get into the details of the quota in Bangladesh.
- 30% Quota reserved for liberation war fighters, their children, their grandchildren. (the issue of grandchildren is objected to). 53 years of liberation war has most likely made most of the children ineligible to apply with 30 years of maximum age for application.
In addition, Many fake liberation war certificates have been issued by this regime to benefit their party sympathizers and members.
-Other quotas reserve positions for women (10 percent), backward districts that are considered marginalized (10 percent), minorities such as the Indigenous population (5 percent), and people with physical disabilities (1 percent).
Aside from grandchildren of liberation warriors, other quotas makes perfect sense. Are they a matter of issue as well?
@@Ana-cw2gi The protesters are also protesting the application of the quota. For example, the objective of quota system is to elevate backward group of people. 2 technicalities are being protested:
a) How many members of a family may be provided the benefit of quota - 1, 2 or all? In the current system, all members of a family can avail . Giving the benefit of quota to 1 or 2 members should be enough to raise the family's status, making them non-backward.
b) How many times a person can take the benefit of quota. Currently quota benefit is provided in university admission, public service jobs, later in case of promotion in jobs. so basically a lot of places. Protesters are demanding that benefit of quota to be provided once to a single person.
So the debate is not only about the percentage, but also application of quota system.
A rickshaw-puller (man-pulled 3 wheeler driver) was quoted saying- "why would I make a living by working hard to send children to have education when he has no chance to elevate his family due to quota system". Just imagine this under-privileged person's feeling!!
Regarding other percentages, there are claims that the quota of indigenous population and physical disabilities are never fulfilled due to lack of applicants qualified enough. I don't have the exact statistics on how much the average recruitment percentage is under these quotas.
It didn’t go into the details because most people watching will just get bored and switch off or over and the channel won’t get the ads revenue. Viewers are held captive by a steady stream of violent imagery, explosions, flames and gunfire. Sad but true.
As a student living outside Bangladesh now, I can't contact my friends and family. My father is in hospital, my friends were injured in the protest. My beloved Dhaka University and almost all educational institutes in Bangladesh were attacked by police, BGB, and the Student League (student wing of Al), which caused unprecedented suffering to protesters. I wish this regime ended here; they don't deserve to be in power after killing innocent people who just asked to repair the unfair quota system. We need to rebuild a broken democratic system from scratch; there is no alternative if we really want a stable and prosperous Bangladesh.
Great people of conscience, please interact with these videos as much as possible so that they have the most reach possible. We can't allow authoritari*n governments, anywhere in the world, from ending it's civilians.

The kind of country and democratic system you get depends entirely on the kind of people you've got in your country to create it. Bangladesh has had 53 years in which to get some kind of workable act together and it looks like it's still at 'square 1'. Shouldn't that tell you something?
Great analysis! @@MrJohnL21

It's been more than 48 hours without a broadband connection in Bangladesh. We're struggling to communicate with our family. Direct calls are dropping making it almost impossible to understand even a sentence; even messages are not being delivered today. The ruling government has violated International human rights law under many articles including using helicopters to drop tear gas & shoot targeting protesters, and cutting off users from internet access. This autocratic government should receive condemnation from all countries without further delay.
Sanctions need to be imposed on the ruling party, Awami League, from countries all over the world.

Well they should all be sent back to Bangladesh
The Bangladeshis in White Chapel were rioting (not protesting) in solidarity, and attacking each other, also, apparently, in solidarity. I guess Channel 4 could cover that, but then they'd have to admit that when migrants come to our shores, they do not, in fact, leave their tribalism and their cultural grievances or political baggage behind, instead they bring it with them and play it out on our streets. They'd have to admit that if it's dangerous when it happens in Bangladesh, then it's also dangerous when it happens here.
I wonder what the thinking is behind bringing in different groups of people with complicated historical relationships, and dropping them altogether in one concentrated area, as if cultural tensions suddenly melt away the moment their feet first touch UK soil. How else did people expect this was going to go?
The bigger question is why are they rioting in London about it?
Because these issues don't disappear when they arrive on our shores, they just come along for the ride.
