DOOM - Life-size BFG is one HELL of a printing job!

- In one of the biggest and most ambitious 3D printing challenges we have ever seen, MyMiniFactory set about building a 1:1 scale 3D printed BFG for one lucky contest winner.
Taking over 1,000 hours of 3D printing and using over 12 KG of plastic filament, this beast of a model took over 1 month to make. The BFG is so heavy to hold it takes at least 3 people to carry it!

"One shot, one kill" Then you're not doing it right at all....
lol
1 shot, a *hell* of a lot of kills.
Cyberdeamon/Hellguards = 3 shots 0 kills
@건김
I SAWED SATAN IN HALF
and repaired him with only flex tape
@@TheNoobius 1 shot, weapon switch quick menu... 1 cyberdemon kill.
Hybby z I think they patched it, so sad...
people are talking about the paint job but that's not the real problem its the fact they didn't actually finish it properly with spot puddy, sanding, priming, and again sanding over and over.
puddy
Estbgti haha yah I meant putty.
exactly, its embarassing.
I only disliked the UAC logo in terms of the paint job. I agree it would have looked better without the visible join lines.
They should mail it to Adam Savage... He'll show em' what's what...
I was waiting for someone to actually hold it like a gun
Me too
looking at how big it is, i don't think anyone but doomguy himself can
Doomguy is only 6 ft tall (183 cm for you non-Americans), so anyone over that could with ease.
@@ugrena7419 You forget thai Doomguy bíceps are as big as a watermelon, so no
Skelotor Two actually he is regular person. Bethesda's game is fake and sick dreams
I never actually realised how fucking big the gun is. I suppose that's why it's called the Big Fucking Gun
Imagine how big Doomguy actually is
Probably The Mountain from Game of Thrones.
BUFF, that's a part of how he is.
man the name of this gun is BFG.
That means. *BIG FOKIN GUN* .......
Now you do realise how big is this fokin BIG GUN *!* ...
Micropoint big force gun?
gotta admit the paint job is atrocious but the rest is good
They should've simply built it and sent it off to someone who would've cared about the paint job. It was embarrassing listening to her talk about painting "as close as possible" and then seeing the result.
There aren't a lot of people who can give it that movie quality finish mind - you'd need someone of Adam Savage's skillset (or better) to do it justice.
Just the green, those needed to be semi transparent pieces of plastic/glass with leds inside.
Man I've seen better paint jobs with air spray guns on Gundams. There are ton of people who could have done a good paint job. They hand painted it like it was an elementary school project lol
You beat me to it.
Kind of a let down. Over 1000 hours spent on printing and can't spare 5-10 hours to fill the gaps and semi smooth the layer lines
I agree. It looks like very little pride went into the work, or they had to meet some ridiculous deadline. I would have expected that kind of quality from a mass produced item, but not from a one-off promo piece.
Andy Waters they kind did
Now make a real one, preferably from Titanium.
But who would lift that?
***** marine.
*****
In a power armor sure.
and more preferably, one that works.
GoodGuyDom11 the gun only works on demons
The model itself looks great, but I'm afraid the paint job looks like absolute crap. Maybe...maybe give that another go?
i thought the same thing
Yeah I agree
Agreed. Got carried away with making it dirty. And all that time building it to pose with it backwards! Nice!
ikr, its more like pain job haha, get it? Cuz its so bad it hurts.
I agree.
I love that it says “to print your BFG at home, download the model in the description” like oh let me grab my multiple 3D printers
0:27 wait is that the level complete theme from DOOM Eternal 3 years before it even came out?
kittycove It is! Wtf!
@@Padlock_Steve yea
kittycove yeah, I was about to comment the same thing lol
It was in 2016
Huh. Just like with the Urdak theme I guess (in 2016 called something like Residual or idk)
That paint job looks like it could use some more work.
Yeah I thought they mighta wanted to use some more shiny/metallicy looking paint on some parts?
Eeyup. A bit more variation in the green, too. Specifically in the glowy bits. I know there are some really talented Warhammer paint channels on RUclips (like BuyPainted) who use all sorts of neat painting tricks and techniques to make the little details like that pop out. It just seems a little flat ATM. Fine from a distance, but the BFG is something you'll want to investigate up close because it's groovy.
They didn't smooth the print lines, fill the gaps, mask it for painting or even get a consistent paint finish. Those should be just the basics for them really.
that is a really sloppy job... they did not fill the spacing at all and a shitty paint job...
i would ask my money back as it was probably more then couple thousands of dollars to print that monstrous gun
Lidor Ori at least they tried
Why paint it from hand its going to look like crap. Why not use metallic sprays then get some stencils for the green bits.
The sad thing is, they did use stencils for the green bits...
Anyone realise the Doom Eternal music in the background, even though this came out in 2016
Oh my gosh
@Miku. Plush Wow you're actually right. There's the end-result music when you finished the mission, and the ambiance music from one of the levels
I havnt played eternal yet cause im POOR and pc broke
I think that they reused the music.
I was just frantically looking through the comments to see if anyone else heard it lol
I wish that the BFG movie is about this.
BFG:Hello boys & girls,Im da big friendly giant
B*G:Excuse me,what?
@@thisguy1640 big fucking gun
The paint job killed it.
Did anyone noticed that from 0:40 to 1:35 theres a DOOM ETERNAL song playing? Well, they were teasing us whithout anyone knowing about it, what irony D:
Wow I should work there as a painter it looks like they'll hire anyone!
"One shot, uh One kill"
Shouldn't it be one shot, 38 kills?
Now they just need to do one Armor of the DOOM GUY
There is
already done, check out the liveaction trailer!
Nah! They would ditch that before it's finished. BFG looked so amateur.
I'd trust someone else to do that, not these guys.
If they did it they would end up painting it blue.
They could’ve LED lit the glowy parts:(
If we had people like this really willing to put in the hours and work, we could have an actually good Doom movie.
I love how, in the original games, Doom guy simultaneously carries a chainsaw, a pistol, a shotgun, a super shotgun, chain gun, rocket launcher, plasma rifle, BFG 9000, 400 bullets, 100 shells, 100 rockets, 600 cells and a backpack.
And nobody cares. Because it's too awesome of a game.
Just imagine walking in to apply a job to a local 3d print job and this was on their website portfolio I would literally cry
I'll be honest, the paint job is a crime against colour itself, but the fact that you took the time to make a model like that in the first place is amazing.
Why does the thumbnail look 10000x better than the gun shown in this video? Also, why didn't they make it look like the gun from the most recent Doom game?
Because it's actually pretty hard to do a real-life version of a sprite.
That is what they tried.
A thousand hours of printing just to put it together with noticeable seams and a paint job that makes the finished product look like a nerf gun. Bravo.
Thanks for allowing my to be part of such a mammoth but epic project!
Fallout guns?
That would be pretty cool.
Well done bro!
Have you ever printed *Lemarchand's Box*?
The coloring of it is fine. It's just the texture of the paint itself.
make one into a nerf gun
Doomguy shoots BFG
Zombie: WTF WAS THAT DAMAGE MY GUY
Anyone wondering why there was a cut out from the doom eternal soundtrack in here 4 years before?
exactly! at first i was surprised because i didn't know this video (or the life-sized BFG model) even existed, so then i'm just watching but then all of then sudden i hear Doom Eternal track that plays at the end of every level! i guess it was either scrapped music from the game or maybe it was meant specifically for promotional purposes (like being put in trailers, behind the scenes videos, etc) and they just decided to throw it into the new game. Its almost weird too because it doesn't sound like a track that would belong in Doom 2016, it sounds like something that would fit into Doom Eternal, although that's probably just because i first heard it in Eternal.
It could've been a cut track from 2016
I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed that. I don't remember the Eternal results screen theme being in this video last I watched this video.
The music at the beginning is from doom eternal!
Doom guy must be one hell of a unit if the BFG is that big
i have finally finished printing this beast
and oh boy,
it was fun
The size of the gun gives a size reference to how big the Slayer is.
"One shot, one kill"? I'm pretty sure anything that's near the plasma ball fired by the BFG is reduced to a fine blood puddle on the ground!
iam more interested at that beautiful cyberdaeamon statue !
They should have sanded it down before painting it. It still had the grain from the 3D printer. It could have also used a few more coats of paint.
Either those people are tiny, they oversized the gun or Doomguy is a damn GIANT, because I don't remember the BFG being THAT big.
If that's life size people need to realize that Doom guy was just walking around with that thing in his pocket
I'll be getting my own on June 15th I can barely wait lol will be showcasing mine on my channel once it arrives
I can't understand how that girl can be so proud of doing an equivalent paint job to that of a 5 year old. Not only that, but they didn't even bother to use anything to fill in the gaps of the pieces or smooth the layers out. Personally I would've used XTC3D which essentially an epoxy made specifically to make 3D prints look professional.
That wasn't big gun anymore, that is one truly destroyer!
Wow, Mick Gordon did that intermission track for Doom Eternal back in 2016
I was looking for this comment hahaha
thank you for sharing the solidworks model!!!
I want so badly to merely be able to hold that beauty.
Great work! Really awesome!
BFG sure earns its name that's for sure.
No puddy? No sanding? Cmon guys, you had the chance to make a masterpiece here.
You know its way more easily to critique something than do it
I want to see someone carrying the entire arsenal
I didn't realise it was that massive, just proves even more how strong doom slayer lmao
Ah yes the BFG also known as big freaking gun.
imagine youve just finished 3d printing your rootin rootin energy shootin and Chad McThundercock in a steel shirt just straight up steals it
Thats what happens when you rely for everything on the computer and the machines - you get your hands completely obsolete as the paint over was completely obscene. :D
That's a really big gun. I'm impressed!
Good Job with the bfg 9000 it looks cool
Like not even a light sanding to get rid of the print lines? Idk man I’m no expert but damn a lil more time coulda made this thing a beaut. I assume there were time constraints or something but regardless, Great job making sure this behemoth held together and getting such an accurate print
You got the BFG-2000, Hell yeah!
Need to get my hands on that
imagine bringing this to comic-con XD
I suppose you could say that changing the asset to smaller parts could be called BFG division
The BFG 9000. A true beaut.
Those words could not be any more true my friend
Now then we need the BFG 10,000
*MINE EYES CAN BUT WEEP AS THEY BEAR WITNESS TO THE MAJESTY... THE BFG 9000!*
"My cause is just... my will is strong... and my gun is very, very large!"
Can't wait for them to do the BFG 10k next
This is so cool.
*The manliest fleshlight*
Paint job makes it look like it's been used by doomguy to slaughter everything in hell which is why it looks battle worn, which I like.
Can't wait to see someone cosplay with this baby.
It looks even bigger than the in-game model
“Warning, the Slayer has acquired the BFG"
I'll cut them some slack and just say maybe they were going for a faux-lighting effect where the green light reflects off of the rest of the gun to give it a glowing look. Although it doesn't really work, I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and say they at least meant to have the paint go a bit outside of the lines.
If your gonna screw around with BFG remake... Use LED's Sand that thing down, add a matte base coat, then build it up to the flat white off beige color its supposed to be. Afterwards, build the cannon that the BFG was originally housed in.
Doom slayer will shed a single tear
Well I don't like to be that guy, but the paint job is awful.
you're gonna need to show me where she thinks she's the best painter.
MLG 007
You also have to stop spelling "basically" wrong.
The Swarm She said "paints a lot of guns" not "paints good guns"
@The Swarm Cosplayers often put a hell of alot of time and effort into making props. They would do a way better job of this. The model was not bad, but they did no work to make it not look like a bunch of plastic parts stuck together and the painting was just awful.
I cant wait for the Doom Ethernal!!!
No denying the legacy of the BFG9000, BUT! I myself have always been partial to the OG Plasma Rifle.
with the way he's holding it at the end.... bye bye hand!
I'm thinking they painted it that way to make it look aged. Worn. Battle tested. Like it's been through numerous fights with hordes of demons in the depths of Hell.
0:26 Doom Eternal teased?? (The song in the background is the win level song from Doom Eternal)
that is one hell of a gun
Does anyone know the length of the dowels used for the gun supports? Putting mine together soon and can't figure out the length of the dowels I need to order... I know the hole diameter is 4mm from what the seller has told me, but i need to know the length so I can put the pieces together properly
The paint job could have been done a lot better, but I would love to hold that model
Looks like a five yr old painted it.
mapmack dude at least appreciate how it was made and the effort
Yeah a good 5 year old
Need an assembly pdf lol. There are so many parts to print. With my big printers, it's hard to know what pieces I can merge before I print.
Sarah Wade:Its one big gun
CORRECTION: ITS ONE BIG FUCKING GUN !!!
Doomguy fired a shot.
It killed 82 demons before it finally hit something.
"If the gun big enough but can't shoot - *S̷M̷A̷C̷K̷* with it"
what modeling software do yall recommend for models such as this? i usually use fusion 360 for functional pieces but it seems there better/easier software out there for models/props/things of that nature.
A kinda new meaning for hell on earth
imagine the weight if it was made out of metal
The thumbnail was.. Extremely deceiving
It's literally what they showed on the video, how could it be deceiving?
ethosaur
It looks like the bottles and figurine are just small! They make the gun look smaller instead of giving scale & making it look bigger.
Like, it looks like those are just small bottles of glue in the background, and I do not know the measurements of the little statuette
If you base that small model next to the gun on an average model like that you can tell its a Big fucking gun. (BFG)
Besides, how could you be mad at watching a video where the gun is actually bigger than you expected.
ethosaur No one said I was mad, I am not mad. I just said it was deceiving, it was a surprise. A pleasant one at that. I felt misled, had, but like how someone would prank you and you can laugh about it in the end
Not really but okay
hilarious that the inspiration for the bfg was a toy gun they probably got rid of years ago
*Only doom guy can handle the fokin BFG* *!*
I hope one day The BFG does become a real gun I really hope someday our technology can become advanced enough
hold up the music at 0:26 was in eternal. i dont remember it being in 2016?
I love the gun they made
Nice, do you have the sword stl???
to all the people saying the paint job wasnt good.
just remember. doomguy is literally killing demons. scratches and rough paint may be the cause of it.
We can now print our own bfg's HELL HERE WE COME SO CLINCH YOUR CHEEKS AND BEND OVER
While I'll say good job on MyMiniFactory for taking on such a monumental project, I feel there are some things that could be pointed out in which could have been handled a bit better. Please remember this is just my opinion & I'm certainly not discouraging the team for the work they've done.
1: Instead of just "lopping off" sections of the weapon as it appears (key word) they did here in order to segment it for easier printing, they could have instead "pulled" & modeled parts of the gun that already had seams in the design. Then, any that you just couldn't get away from could have been smoothed over with modeling cement, sanded & the then the whole thing painted. I've seen this done many a time & know it's possible, even helped a friend build the SAW from HALO after he did this exact thing. Large seams in the model should not be so easily seen, especially through a RUclips video.
2: Lights. Please, don't just paint on lighting effects. I've seen many designers build model weapons & gear where they just "sink in" that area a bit, run some wire, fill it with some LEDs & use sandpaper on some acrylic or even clear plastic to diffuse it before gluing things in. Even if it's just "turn on / off" & there are no blinking or strobe effects, lighting can make all the difference. While I don't 3D print myself, it certainly didn't appear too difficult so long as you were proficient in the modelling software to make minor adjustments. You can get away with no sound, but please don't just paint on lights (especially for something commissioned from the developers).
3: Painting. This is a metal weapon & should appear as such. Either put on a thin layer of putty, let dry & sand it down (multiple times of course) or fine sand the plastic smooth & paint then. While decently accurate & detailed for the way it was visibly done, just painting the plastic is not enough. Sorry to say, but that messy hazard logo stenciled on didn't help.
Again, I'm not these guys, I don't know what time or standard or commission they were held to. The printing (without errors) & mapping out of the project alone would have taken me a good month or so on my own just to get everything fitting together. However, I am sorry to say that while pretty decent & more than acceptable as a replica weapon, I would have to ask for a substantial portion of my money returned. Good to take to a game con once, but not good enough for me to mount on display in my home for all to see.
