Exploring an Abandoned Mansion Days Before it was Demolished

  • Before I get into the description of this house I'd like to thank my subscriber Ethan / ethan_minni. . for sending me to this house. He has been a great resource and I have enjoyed collaborating with him!
When I first saw this house it made me think of something from a TV show or movie. There's always houses like this pillars in the front big driveways, nice walkways gardens and a Volvo parked out front. Ferris Bueller's day off or a house in a Washington suburb in a spy movie maybe lol.
Mansions are usually classified as 5,000 square feet or more according to my research and I think this has just makes the mark and only because you include the basement that is renovated. One of the reasons I'm definitely classify this house has a mansion is that it has its own tennis court that is certainly a mansion feature. It's certainly not the size of a few other houses I've been in but it was still a great explore. And I'm glad I explored it when I did because this house was demolished to make way for a development about 30 days after I explored it.
Before I even got in the house I was a little creeped out when I entered the pool house, I immediately could tell this somebody was squatting there and recently. A sleeping bag, knapsack and fresh fruit just sitting there. I thought for sure I was going to run into somebody. Fortunately I didn't but I did hear some odd noises like the house that made me think that there was somebody there with me.
This House which I'm guessing was built in 1981 and sold for 2.5 Millions $ in 2014 to a developer has some really great features. The finished basement was awesome with all the bookshelves I always wanted to have my own library like that. There was lots of artifacts lying around to sift through, CDs cassette tapes old electronics etc... Somebody certainly had a lot of thought in the details that made this house their home. Something I did find odd was the mixture of high end building material mixed with lower grade, IE hollow core doors rather than wood, or wood door trim and MDF base boards. Just an observation, could be a totally normal practice, and this stuff is way better than mine, so who am I to critique ))
    If you visit this website
    www.sellmystuf...
You can see some of the amazing things that used to be in this house but after the estate sale it's all gone.
When I go through places that have modern features I always wonder why Habitat for Humanity or a charity can't go in there and take out anything that still has value the stonework the switches the doors that have not been damaged it amazes me about how much of this stuff ends up in a landfill.

How sad :( This was someone's home, their pride and joy. Vandals suck. This house is gorgeous.

This was a grand house, you could tell by the p.a. system under the stairs. Am I the only one who feels sad when I see books left behind? So many things that could have been reused too, very sad. Great find :)

No, it made me sad too...and irritated at the senseless destruction. I've NEVER understood why people do that.

Joanne Sabourin No and bet it's the banks responsible for not managing the house, just really sad there are people that would be grateful to live there and protect the property.

it's the younger generation Derek Hunter, I can't understand it either, it is scary that they feel they have to destroy things, such a beautiful home..

The condition of the mansion wasn't even that bad. That sucks they just demolished it.

I was just thinking that as well. I literally don't know a lot about well anything really but the house didn't seem too far gone to where someone couldn't have fixed it up and sold it. Obviously the restoration probably would have cost a pretty penny but someone out there would have bought it.

I hate how wasteful humans are. The house was full of things that could have been donated to charity, instead of just getting destroyed along with the house.

It makes me me so sad seeing all the things in there that could have been used by someone. I'm glad at least one person got shelter here, they would have been able to keep the poorhouse warmer than the huge rooms in the house. One thing that jumped out at me was the green turtle sandpit, so children lived here, my son was born in 1982 and I bought him one of these for his third birthday, a child would have loved to have that. What a shame they don't let a charity in to take anything they want. Thanks for showing this, I'm off to look at how it was

It's sad that not more stuff was saved or donated to second hand stores. There were a bunch of nice metal shelving units, I saw some solid brass furnace grates, the new light fixtures and nails in the boxes and of course all those books.

Alex Thamer yes as well as the beautiful wooden doors and floors. People like most of us commenting appreciate this lovely home where once there was the sounds of life of children laughing and the click of high heels across the magnificent black and white marble floors and a husband who was proud of his family home. Now it's disposal time. There must be more to life than this Un ceremonial ending.

So disheartening. Why are these beautiful places being torn down for inferior, little box developments? Why do we allow it?

    • @afnusa
      @afnusa 7 лет назад +2

I think there are three possible reasons why:
The first possible reason is whoever owned the house may have ran into financial problems and they decide to sell and if they get an offer that is a reasonable offer or they get exactly what they were asking I don't think they would decline the offer, that would be pretty foolish of them.
The second possible reason they were probably elderly and they decide to sell and either they got a reasonable offer or they got exactly what they were asking so again it would be foolish not to accept.
The first two reasons that are listed above I hope were the case, where a developer received this property by purchasing it and not using eminent domain, even though I wouldn't like selling to a developer who is going to demolish something that I lived in, had good times and bad times in however if they purchase the property I still think they should be able to do what they want because it's now theirs even though I may not like it. On the other hand if the new owners receive this property thought eminent domain I think they should be ashamed that I hope they gave the previous owners more money than what their property is valued at.
The third possible reason which I think is wrong is the Canadian government could have used the power of eminent domain which basically forces someone to sell their property to someone else on what they think is fair market value and if you refuse you may get less. Most of the time governments use eminent domain to force someone to sell their property to a developer in hopes a developer will either build high-end apartments, stores that will attract more people to the government can collect more taxes.

I think it looks as though the house was bought (from a previous owner) and being renovated and before it was completely finished they were offered that huge amount and it was never lived in. Some things like that box of lights, the box of nails and the fridge looks brand new inside. Or maybe they did live there but were renovating some things, like going from the ugly gold lights to the white. The place was beautiful. Have a great day!

I have to agree with you. There were so many high end materials used for that house, yet you come around a corner, to find a very obvious difference in the doors. Some looked like Cherrywood. Then another, would look like a low-end Home Depot door. And I love Home Depot. I wonder if it had something to do with funding at the time of construction. Sure makes me sick, to know these beautiful homes are being demolished to make room for multi-family complexes. If they keep it up, they're going to make towns & cities so crowded, they begin to look like Los Angeles & Orange County, California, where I live. Makes for a lot of traffic congestion & over-crowding

I think you would be very lucky to get it for that. The land alone in the uk would be more. The house, even in its current state would sell for over £2m so I think £3m as it stands minimum and likely more. If selling to developers for building smaller homes like this.......double at least in uk.

Sadly it's easier and cheaper for beautiful, historic homes like these to be demolished than it is to put the money and time into it.Developers want the land to put 100's of cookie cutter homes .All about fast, easy and the almighty dollar.

Sammy Sunshine agree. having worked in the industry i can tell you builders get the same houses built in a matter of months, put junk cheap fixtures and appliances to make themselves richer and you would be surprised at the amount of profit. its never about anyone else, just whos hungry for money.its really sad.

wow I agree that it is such a waste of natural (declining) resources. I wish that they could maybe say to a not for profit organization " Hey this place will be demolished with contents, feel free to take anything you need." It makes me sad to see all of that wood, items and other building material to also be wasted. It feels like these people have enough money to not care about it, in their minds it probably justifies their waste.

What a shame that vandals could demolish this place so bad. I can't understand how someone gets pleasure out of destroying other peoples property, even if it is abandoned. I would love to live in a place like this. It's just sickening that developers put up all those worthless cardboard houses and take some thing so beautiful and tear it down. So much stuff that could have been reused, just thrown away. We are the most "throw away" country in the world. Nothing is of value to most people anymore. Sad!

I really feel bad for homes that are abandoned with so many qualities and features to be saved for someone else's enjoyment. It really angers me as well to see someone build something so unique and either couldn't afford it afterwards and just leave it and inferriorates me that the bank don't take over and try to sell it to someone else that could afford it.

I sell custom window treatment, & those custom fabric wrapped cornices around the windows/doors typically range anywhere between $200 - $400 each. (in the video at 3:48)

    • @youknowit_KT

And those shutters at 10:48 could have been anywhere between $450 - $650 each.
Shutters are never cheap, & they are a lot more work to measure, & install than most other treatment.

I also noticed that those fabric cornices are on quite a few doors & windows, & EVEN above their shower!! Haha! Odd, but expensive & very custom, not something you can just go buy at a store.

To Joann, No Your not the only one who feels sad. When You see books, or in my case what hits Me, when I see Children Toys. Or when just about everything is left behind, and for whatever reason, It appears that They either just quickly left or They never came home. And everything is still in the same place. That makes Me think about My Grandmother in 1974, She went out to mail Her Christmas Cards to the Family. On Her way back, almost across the Highway of where She lived. She was killed by a drunk driver. My Grandfather could not go back to Their trailer home. Back on July 22, 2018. My Sister and Her Husband and Son and Daughter in Law. Left My Sister's Apt. to go to a Baseball game. As They got closer to the game, She was having severe pain in Her left Arm. When Her Son parked the car. He asked Her, if She was alright ? She said, She was. And for Him and His Wife to go inside, and get Sodas, popcorn, hot dogs. And Her, and Her Husband will be in, in a few minutes. About 5 mins. later Her pain was getting worse, so He called His Stepson and said, come back to the car. I think We should take Your Mother to the Hospital. Her Son and Daughter in Law, ran back to the Car. Her Son was pushing for Her to go to the Hospital. She said, no take Me home. I want to lay down for a little while. They lived about a half hour from the Stadium. They helped Her walk in to Her Apt. She sat down on the Coach, and fell over. Someone called the Ambulance and Medics. According to Her Husband, He was doing CPR on Her. When the Police arrived, They were giving Her Oxygen, and doing CPR. One of the Police Officers got on the radio and told dispatch to tell the Ambulance and Medics to expedite, it was an active working code. Which is there way of saying, We have no pulse, We're out of time. The Ambulance and Medics got there They started working on Her. And than They put Her in the back of the Ambulance. Obviously, They wouldn't let Her Son or Husband in the Ambulance. When They got to the Hospital, and They pulled Her out. They were what is called bagging Her. That's when they have this tube going down Her Mouth into Her throat. And there is a big plastic balloon looking object. They squeeze it every few seconds. They rushed Her into the Hospital. The Dr. tried to bring Her back doing C.P.R. and She didn't come back. As the Family was gathering at the Hospital. Several People had asked Her Husband, did He want any of Us to come over to Their Apt. Or did He want someone to drive Him Home. He declined everything. He said, We'll be fine, We are just going to go home, and take Our Dog for a walk, and get ready for bed. He didn't even realize, He was talking as if She was coming home. I know on the day of Her Funeral Service, several People had offered to come over and pack up Linda's things, when He was ready. He replied, no Thank You. No one is touching Her things. I'm leaving them where She has it. Shortly before Her abrupt death, They had went and picked out a Trailer Home. Something She had wanted as Her final Home. According to Her Husband, She died from a Massive Heart attack. I thought about Her final hour or two. I can bet, when They walked out of the Apt. to head to the ball game. The first thing She did was to make sure Her dog, had food and water. She game Him, hugs and kisses. ( People would tease Her, that She treated Her Animals, with more, love and affection, than what She gave Her Husband and Children, who were all grown up.) After She knew Her Dog, was taken care up. As She was walking to the Car, whatever Neighbors were outside, She waved to them all. Probably said My Son and Daughter in Law are taking Us to the Ball Game. She jokingly probably said, look for Me on TV. Than whoever She was talking to, She probably said, if Your still up when I get home, I will tell You all about the Game, if Your not Up, I will talk to You in the Morning. Have a safe Night, God Bless, talk to You later. I'm not sure if Her Husband is still in the Apt. or went through with buying the Trailer Home. I know My Niece and Nephew are still having a hard time. And from what I know from other Family Members at least as of October, Her Husband, really didn't want Visitors. We have a large Family. And He wasn't the type to Socialize with People. When We had Family picnics He would just mainly talk to His Grown up kids and My Sister's Grownup kids. He barely even talked to the Grandkids. He was about 8-10 years Younger than My Sister. Once He is passed the shock, and what will really hit Him, is the Holidays. My Sister was big on the Holidays. Actually We all were, because of Our Mother. Even though We had Our Own Family, Our Mother still wanted Us all to come over for Dinner. My Mother had 9 Children, and We all are Married, I think at the time of Her Death, She had 33 Grandchildren, And I think the count now for Great Grandchildren is about 35-37. I think the reason I went into this. To Me, when You see a Vacant house, You know that house has a life to tell. I hate riding past homes that were foreclosed. About 90% of them is because Someone lost Their High Paying Job, or someone was hurt in some kind of Accident, and it took a while for them to recover. And in some cases One of Our Military lived there, and may have been hurt in combat, or killed in Action. And most of the time, the Surviving Spouse doesn't have the Money to keep the Home. I remember seeing a sticker with this saying, " I think it's ridiculous for a Man who is wearing a helmet, to throw a football around to make millions of dollars more than a Man who wears a Helmet, dodging bullets, to save Our Country " . I agree with that especially the disrespect the One tossing the football, has even less Respect now for the Man or Woman who is dodging the bullets. By totally disrespecting the Flag. Well Thank You for reading this. Have a Great Day, God Bless.

Seeing stuff like this makes me really sad. Such a beautiful house and grounds. Can't believe people would just abandon something like this. Tearing it down was probably the best thing, since it would have cost alot of money to refurbish it. Mold had probably already set in and that can be deadly. So many buildings are getting demolished. Really sad.
