It's not really slept on, it's just that it was inferior to it's predecessor from the same company in almost every category except price. People wanted the MP5 successor to be the MP5 with a few QoL fixes not a direct blowback piece of shit.
That proves you don't understand what the UMP is and does. Did you happen to look at the groups being shot in full auto? The UMP has a hydraulic buffer that's rather robust and clever. It'll print tiny groups in full auto, even if perceived recoil is higher. It's getting the job done more effectively at nearly half the weight, cost, and with infinitely better ergonomics. How you arrive at believing it's a step backwards could only be ignorance. The only reason it isn't everywhere is that people discovered short barreled rifles really aren't as much of a problem as prior thought made them think. Then along comes 300 blackout subsonics, and there wasn't really a point to the sub gun anymore. One of the best sub guns ever made remains the M3 grease gun, which was still in service even during desert storm. And that's about as crude as a gun gets coming from a factory.
Nah, the UMP is exactly what people think it is. A plastic fantastic blowback SMG that H&K tried to sell for roller delay prices. Instead of a better MP5 with more machining instead of stamping and welding, one with more modern ergos and last round bolt hold open we got the Kel-Tec special. They could've done what is the JP-5 now, but instead they cheaped out.
@@Fenster21 they did. back then polymer for weight savings and in a way that's actually structurally sound wasn't as common. But today you can get an Extar EP-9 pcc for like $300 and it's better than the UMP because of AR triggers, ergos and available magazines.
I love the UMP, but I had an opportunity to buy a HK USC for an extremely great price and still passed it up after opening up pandora's box of UMP/USC ownership. I obviously did not want the neutered USC and starting to look into converting the USC to an SBR and make it actually look like a UMP, after looking at pricing from Tommy built to do that process, I started to question why would I spend all that money when there are better options for much cheaper such as modern 300 Blackout platforms, and I already own a MP5. Nevertheless, if HK or PTR sold a UMP pistol that actually looked the part, I would still be all over it.
I saw that this was a 45min video on the UMP and was like, 'how in the hell are they going to keep my attention for three-quarters of an hour on a video about the UMP?' Well boy you done did it. 🎉
31:00 The .40 S&W UMP was my EDC while assigned to ATVs 2004-2008 with the Border Patrol. Rugged, dependable and it would fit easily in the cargo box. Good video.
Another factor in the UMP's lack of popularity that I didn't hear mentioned is the rise in popularity of short barreled rifles at the time. L.E. and military doesn't rock SMGs much any more and they rock the shorty rifles instead most of the time.
The adoption of the M4 in 1994 (and later shorter variants) and subsequent SBRs like the G36C (2001) are underappreciated for their role in relegating SMGs to niche roles. The North Hollywood bank shootout also did a lot to get US SWAT teams to ditch their MP5s and Colt SMGs.
Suppressed UMP45 in Battlefield 3 and 4 hardcore conquest was perfect. Slow rate of fire with high damage at close range, good heavy SMG for a video game.
Now that he works at HK, does James just roll around with an HK91 magazine filled with twizzlers for tactical snacking or is that for special occasions?
Great Video. Chris was beasting on full auto. I wish Extraction would’ve made the list. The character that carried it was really good and it had a dope sight.
UMP came out when the Germans were getting more in touch with their homosexuality and wanted to impress Gay Americans being that it’s chambered in 45ACP.
What's also crazy is that this movie was the first time Carrie-Anne Moss had actually learned to ride a motorcycle. And they put her on a suped up and beautiful, custom Ducati as her first bike. So jealous. And they even convinced Ducati to actually do a custom dark green paint job just for the movie. Ducati almost never does stuff like that lol. Keanu Reeves actually still owns the actual bike from the movie because he loved it so much
For anyone millennial and younger the ump and ump45 especially were not made iconic by movies but way more by video games. MW2 made the ump45 legendary being by far the best smg and the most memorable in the game, slow firing , hard hitting and with an amazing look that fit the game aesthetics perfectly. Dozens of other shooters featured the gun before and after
Another great knowledge share from 1911 Syndicate. Ofcourse I knew about the UMP, but not close to this level! Thanks for sharing. Maybe one day I'll be able to collect a piece of HK subgun history! The best part of the QoS scene is how Bond has supreme accuracy..pull the gun, end the fight.
It is a solid design and met with untimely demise due to a few reasons (my opinion) The US market was fickle on 45/40 and the 9mm version was larger than it needed to be. As a manufacturing marvel - it did to subguns what Glock did for handguns, but with a US ban in place and mis guided police demands for 45 coupled to expensive mags ($100 vs CZ sub $20 mags) it didn't hit the mark in US civi market. I love my clone with an HK kit in 45 and use 45 super in it on occasion - hits hard!
The HK UMP should have been an updated MP5 with more rail space, roller delayed goodness, lighter, and softer recoil. It wasn't, and it was equally as expensive with simple blowback and higher weight. Meh...
Tonight on 1911 Syndicate: jake hums the Super Mario Brother's theme, H&K MP5 plastic replacement didn't replace anything appears, and the AZ Yeti looks at the UMP like it's a meatball sub.....
LWRC, instead of just doing simple blowback and doing it right, went with this overly complex and patch work system of short recoil, jacking the price of the guns to the moon, and making the accuracy and reliability embarrassing for modern standards.
My UMP movie that first pops in my head is Casino Royale (2006 version) and then Sicario 2 - and an honorable mention to Bad Boys 2 and Quantum of Solace!
I shot a UMP 45 in full auto - it wasn't as bad as people say. I found it a little bouncy with recoil but you get used to it after a few mags. It's no MP5 but it was fine.
On this episode of the Syndicate: Jake drinks Natty Lights in the Gray Room while reminiscing on his High School Glory Days UMP’ing it up in slomotion; while James spews three and half decades of HK history lessons over a hidden chicken sandwich… most likely from BoJangles 😉.
They wanted a locked breach, roller delayed is falling out of fashion to rotating bolt short stroke piston. Litraly every new self loading firearm that's not a pistol or shotgun and not a caliber too weak to handle it is using that system as it's the best.
Movies notwithstanding, the UMP is a good looking, exotic sub gun…but in shootability it’s a total dud. They beat you to death and shake around too much.
This is a great video regarding the UMP. I wish you guys played the scene in Live Free or Die Hard apartment firefight scene. The UMP is used in that scene alot more than any of the movies you played... Maybe ya never seen that movie.
Brad Taylor put them in his books. But then he switched to .300 Blackout. Also, the UMP isn't slept on, it was just kind of a quickly thrown together plastic gun. The mag well is just a chunky Boi. But the civilian version should be about 1100 max. But because it has those 2 red letters....unobtainium. Just not worth it considering that it was a semi-auto PCC with a huge price tag that you could get an AR, a pistol and a nice shotgun for the price.
Awesome video and great movie references! The UMP is such a sexy ass looking subgun to me and its why I bought one years ago. Absolutely love my UMP 40. Another honerable mention movie scene with some UMP action is Sucker Punch with the Nazi Zombie fight scene. 👍

Idk if that’s possible or not but that would be cool af. Ig on one hand it’s not as needed as with 9mm since 45 is subsonic already so if there isn’t one I assume that’s why/adding a suppressor is simpler than a integral system
I bought a USC and all the proper parts to make a 922r compliant semi-auto clone. It was pricey to do, but I love it. I have people who want to buy it from me all the time, but that's not gonna happen. I'd have to source all the parts, and it would take $5000 to make it worth my time. I'm going to SBR it.
