  • I got this Stanley Hobby Vice about a month ago to use for my small wood carving projects. It's a surprisingly good vice! (so far). In this video I show you a couple of the technical specs and how to use the vice as well as putting it under a heavy use test to see how much it moves
    I would like to point out that I have not been paid for this review, I just bought this, was impressed and wanted to share my view on it
    It was just under £20 when I bought it in May 2021

      My pleasure, thank you for watching. Mine is still working as it did on the first day after a lot of abuse! So hopefully yours will be the same.

    Great review. Just what I needed to know! When looking at the pictures on Amazon I also thought some parts looked like plastic (considering the price) and was on the fence if I should get one. I like the fact that you can swivel it around to any position you need. Your review has convinced me that this is what I need for the rather lightweight work I intend to use it for. Thanks!

      Awesome! I'm glad you enjoyed it, thank you. I was also very surprised to see that it didn't have a lot of plastic parts and am still surprised to this day at the amount of punishment it's taken!

    Great review. Yes, I agree... to hold larger things that you are going be bashing away at perhaps no, but for 'steadying' items, a resounding yes IMO.
    Perfect for my use!

    It’s surprisingly solid! I honestly thought it was plastic until the end, since I mainly use palm chisels I will definitely be checking this out. Thanks for the recommendation!

      I was very surprised by it too! I'm sure it'll be no problem at all for your palm chisels. Thank you 👍

    That's a terrific bargain at twenty quid, and I thought it was a plastic body too! Plastic isn't always bad, of course. Thanks for showing us Clint, if I was in the market this would certainly persuade me. Stanley Tools, are you listening?

    • @ClintRoseCarving
      @ClintRoseCarving  3 года назад

      Hahaha you tell em Mark!! Cheers mate! Yeah if you look at the listing on Amazon they have a very weird pic of it, it looks plastic. To be honest I thought "ah well, twenty quid, even if it's plastic still worth a go". Then to my surprise seems to be cast iron, such a sturdy little thing for the money, very surprised. Cheers for looking in!

    Did you notice that they used a lot of oil on the vice. I had to wipe down the handles because there was so much oil.

    I'm pretty careful with tools. I bought one of these expecting it, being Stanley, to be good quality but I stripped the a thread. I would have expected, for the price, that they had put a sleeve of hard metal in where they cut the threads but that doesn't seem to be the case. I did actually get my money back so I'm not too upset. I just wish someone would make a vise like this but stronger.

      Interesting, I've had no issues with mine yet but maybe I've just been lucky. I think with any tool that's a kind of budget price like this there's always the risk of it not being made to a high enough standard

    So I see in the video you twirl the adjustment on the "jaw" width setting - just bought mine and it's super tough to adjust. So bad it's unusable. Maybe I got a faulty one? Taking it back to Bunnings (Australia) for advice or return.

    • @VanillaMacaron551
      @VanillaMacaron551 10 месяцев назад +1

      And yes I did get the "rubber" caps discussed here but took them off immediately, presuming they were packaging. They're more plastic than rubber and would make the device's grip on anything more slippery.

    • @ClintRoseCarving
      @ClintRoseCarving  10 месяцев назад

      Maybe it's just a bit stiff at first but gets looser with use. The rubber jaws have been excellent for me, though I've pretty much ruined them now through so much use

  • @whittling
    @whittling 5 месяцев назад

    Hi Clint! Looks like it's been 2 years since you published this video. Do you still use this hobby vice? has it held up well over the years? If you could change anything about it - to improve it, what would that be?

    • @ClintRoseCarving
      @ClintRoseCarving  5 месяцев назад +1

      I use it almost every day! To be honest it's barely changed since I got it, just a little bashed up by me. The one thing I'd change is to maybe have thicker rubber protective jaws for it, they're worn down (through heavy use mind) and I think they could do with being more substantial.

    is there a hole to allow the vice to be bolted down?

    • @ClintRoseCarving
      @ClintRoseCarving  2 года назад +1

      I don't think so, but maybe you'd be able to drill your own holes for it. Not sure
