An updated version of my previous clone effect. Created using nothing except a DSLR, a manual camera slider (i.e. no motion control) and Adobe After Effects. This time we didn't even use a green screen.
How do you think we did it? Full tutorial coming soon!
A 'clone' effect where one actor interacts with themselves in a static shot is easy enough, as seen here:
    • How to CLONE yourself!!
    • HOW TO CLONE YOURSELF!...
BUT... this is a low budget attempt at recreating a 'motion control' clone effect where the camera is still able to move, as seen in Back to the Future Part 2 / Part 3 and the Man in the Iron Mask. For extra points, one clone walks fully around the other. We did ours with no budget and without proper motion control. See who we did it here! • How to CLONE yourself ...
In Back to the Future Part 2 this was done at Industrial Light and Magic (ILM) with a computer-controlled device called the VistaGlide, which could perfectly replicate the same camera movement multiple times. I don't know what they used for Iron Mask, but it could have been a similar system.
    Scenes in the films:
    • Young Biff Meets Old Biff
    • The Man in the Iron Ma...

I love how you got the shadow of your gun-self as you move around at the start. Very nice--looks so real.

Apparently everyone has their own unique designs and patterns they see as well. I think that's interesting

Great update! Much better than the original, I think it has to do with the lighting, like you said in the original tutorial. Shooting the background the same place you shot the foreground will guarantee realistic lighting, and that's really what sets this apart from the original. Nice work!

The one directional light really helps sell that the 2 plates are one and the same. It's a really good technique that's used all throughout Hollywood (think Jurassic Park's T-Rex).

Absolutely! That was the aim this time, and to help prove both characters are actually filmed in the real space with the same lighting

Looks great! Though I´d like to add something, even though I´m not very good myself maybe you could use this.
I, again, in my inexperience, think the shadow when he walks in front of him looks a little fake. I think it´s just too uniform, no specular highlights and no blending with the shadows that were already there. Now, I don´t really know how I´d fix it myself, but I think that would add even more to the realism of the shot. Great work, and I´d love a tutorial!

Yes the shadow was tricky, still looking for better ways to do it really

I can imagine how many calculations, plus those casting moving shadows and reflections from both figures must be layered on each other artificially to achieve this realistic result🙌
