I absolutely enjoyed watching this video. I used to live in W-s-M working as an assistant teacher in 1981/82, trying desperately to teach German to the sixth formers at Broadoak Comprehensive and Worle School. That Westonian scenery now also brought back the faces of so many lovely people I met there. My stay in Weston-s-M surely added an anglophile attitude to my life. Big Like❗
Many decades ago, Weston Super Mud was a very pretty place. When the old pier was in use. I have seen old pics of it. Looks like back then, they spent alot of cash on the gardens etc. It looked impressive. There's just nothing really there now cept a pier and a big wheel and a beach of sand and mud and a need for binoculars to see the tide. Manys the time I have got fairly excited about going there but as soon as I get there, I think, what the hell did I drive here for. Now, back in 1990, when going up the pier, there was a skeleton of a wooden boat? I have asked many people if they recall it but nobody seems to remember. Was the boat there?? Or did I dream it.
Thank you so much sharing all these interesting info of the town! I just search place for retired via right move I found this place South Road is the place I love
I grew up there in 2001-2012 as a 11 year old I moved to Western Australia with my family , safe to say I am happy I am gone. Looks very sad and empty .
our town is essentially Greek owned, not that it has changed its character, new influx of East Europeans seem ok as well revitalising some very dated shops, even a lapdancing club, tries to look like Vegas but is gentle in spirit.
University WsM exciting...I don’t think so. Very sad that the beautiful Winter Gardens was demolished for a load of concrete slabs. Who agreed this horrendous decision? Just look up the pictures of how it looked vs the current concrete. What a lovely attraction.
I lived there for a while 24 years ago. Visited last week and see people walking round like Zombies near Tesco, a lad asleep on the side of the road, woman walking round in dressing gowns. Tesco was full of Chav's.
If weston is that old why is it not mentioned in the doomsday book? Uphill village is Milton is and Worle is but Weston is not. Clllr Crockford Hawley is not very well informed about the origins it is a Victorian bathing town. A small amount if study proves this.
What doesn't appear in Domesday? The Domesday Book does not cover certain important cities, such as London, Winchester, Bristol and the borough of Tamworth; nor Northumberland and Durham or much of north-west England. For Wales, only parts of certain border areas are included. Neither was it ever fully completed, being abandoned at some stage early in the reign of William Rufus, who succeeded to the throne in 1087. Not every place that existed in 1086 appears in the Domesday Book. We know this from other evidence - such as Anglo-Saxon charters, architectural evidence or the origins of the place-name itself. The place-names found in the Domesday Book are township and estate names, and may include other villages and hamlets that receive no specific mention in the text; for example, the Domesday entry for Shepshed, near Loughborough, includes the settlements of Long Watton, Lockington and Hemington, but they are not specifically mentioned. www.bbc.co.uk/history/british/normans/doomsday_01.shtml
There is a theory that it is indeed mentioned, although it was part of a larger estate so not independently identified. In fact, it was included in the entry for Ashcombe, constituting the western portion of the settlement. I am not so sure, though, of the historical record around Jesus and the occupation of his uncle... but I will leave that matter to the biblical scholars.
Yeah, my dad used to live there 20 odd years ago. I went back there a couple of weeks ago and I was shocked to see the amount of closed shops and drug addicts. So much has changed about the place. It doesn't seem like the magical place it once was!
Interesting the gentlemans last comment: "Lets hope the younger generation will take us forward" for WSM's future. I'd say not at all. The younger generation don't know how to be. Us older lot need to show them quality, not plastic tack (as is the 21st Century.).The other end - Bernbeck Pier and Victorian end needs attention, more so to bring alive the wonderful vibrant past. Im in my late 40's. You've still got my generation - the last of quality- desperate to continue to appreciate the quality thats decaying before everyones eyes. COME ON WESTON COUNCIL- OPEN YOUR EYES!
Sadly I have seen this older generation wreck what you said was good. Birnbeck Pier has suffered from historical failure not new generation failure, we have to preserve what left and modernise the town. Ask yourself who brought the Plastic tack? I remember it being here in the 1980s long before the the new generation! Great video and very informative!

Like every sea side town then, it has its problems but also a lot of cash floating about due to the Welsh and Bristol connections
@@jameswrightson744 There is money there.

Loved as a child 1948😂
Dan's ashes were spread. Tread lightly on hollow ground. Dan's favorite spot
Who’s Dan?
Jesus came to Weston-super-Mare
Elivis went to Vegas
But did Elvis walk on water
Definitely not! Only Jesus can do that👍😊🙏
I blame the BBC for everything 😝
I have family in WSM and visit often. Jesus never left Israel and was never a tourist in England
The town is ok, its just the large percentage of drug addicts, crime and rude people that live there. If they were got rid of it would be heaven.
