  • Without question, Niantic's most controversial change in 2023 was the Remote Raid Pass nerf. This was almost universally despised by the Pokémon GO community, and it had several negative affects on Pokémon GO. In this video, I will be taking a look back on this change and determine why it was such a bad decision.

    Pokémon Go is a 2016 augmented reality (AR) mobile game developed and published by Niantic in collaboration with The Pokémon Company for iOS and Android devices. A part of the Pokémon franchise, the game is the result of a collaboration between Niantic, Nintendo and The Pokémon Company. It uses the mobile device GPS to locate, capture, battle, and train virtual creatures, called Pokémon, which appear as if they are in the player's real-world location. The game is free to play; it uses a freemium business model and supports in-app purchases for additional in-game items. The game launched with around 150 species of Pokémon, which had increased to around 500 by 2019.
    Pokémon Go was released to mixed reviews; critics praised the concept, but criticized technical problems. It was one of the most used and profitable mobile apps in 2016, having been downloaded more than 500 million times worldwide by the end of the year. It is credited with popularizing location-based and AR technology, promoting physical activity, and helping local businesses grow due to increased foot traffic. However, it attracted controversy for contributing to accidents and creating public nuisances. Various governments expressed concerns about security, and some countries regulate its use. By early 2019, the game had over a billion global downloads, grossing over $3 billion in revenue. The game also had over 147 million monthly active users as of May 2018.

    The other thing Niantic completely does not understand is that even in cities, there is travel time. For me to see a raid pop up that I want to do, find people to go do it, and then drive over to the city center where people are, that's over 40 minutes. So, even if I want to go to in person raids, there's not enough time. People work. People have school. It gets dark. There is bad weather. So many many reasons remote raids were important that has nothing to do with us just sitting at home. My neighborhood park has 3 stops and 2 gyms. There are players here, but I have never ever seen more than me, my husband, and maybe one other person show up in person for a raid. Ever. This puts most 5* raids out of our ability to win.

      Yes! This! When it’s just me, I can’t get anyone else to join, Even using campfire. And we have lots of gyms locally. I hardly ever see flares on there even. Occasionally I can get a few more people when I’m with my kid, but even then it’s hard to get enough people to beat a 4-5 star raid. We could if remote raid passes were more abundant because then our invitees would join in too. And I’m still needing to get Landorus to take a snapshot and finish years old research, and I missed it because I didn’t have enough coins for a remote raid pass when I was invited. :/

    2023 really felt like an all out war with the community. Every new shiny or good community day was counter balanced by major errors and community killing decisions.
    In addition to the remote raid nerf and the negative effects it's had to the community, we saw important community resources like Silph Road and PokeMiners shuttered. Box prices sharply rose as they became filled with garbage items. Elite Raids, which were meant to get us out and "off the couch" constantly had multiple errors. Did one ever work worldwide? I know they stopped doing special spawns afterwards.

    1. At this stage the limit of 5 makes no difference to me. The cost simply dropped remote raids as a viable gameplay.
    2. Now due to loss of revenue they are making every event a Paid Research or some type of paid ticket to participate.
    A double whammy. Death of games … is the time when they turn free to play into pay to play.

    Another thing I want is that if you can see the gym on your screen and it comes up in your Nearby Raids it is considered a local Orange/Green Pass Raid and not a remote raid. There are plenty of times I see a raid nearby when outside playing that have others already in it and I want to join them. However, by the time I get close enough to use the Orange/Green Pass, the raid team is in already. This happens a lot with 5* and Mega raids, especially when I haven't used my Daily Orange Pass. There are other times when I see an on screen raid and I want to do it, but I don't want to go out and it's not worth a remote raid to do it for whatever reason (not enough time on the countdown clock to get up and go into public, late at night, on/across from a busy roadway, poor weather, etc...). Granted, these are usually 1 or 3* Raids, but again... if I haven't used my pass and/or it is something I am hunting for... I believe it's a fair compromise and encourages raiding.

  • @DamianRavenhold
    @DamianRavenhold 8 месяцев назад +8

    Honestly, if we were to compromise.
    Lowering the price to 150 pokecoins and raising the limit to 10-15 passes a day would be the best option if we just arent going back to the old system.

    I was a $100 a week raider. Since the nerf I've done 7 remote raids. 2 of the legendaries ran. After the last runner I could never bring myself to remote raid again. There's no point in remote raiding if you cannot even do enough raids to get a high IV legendary and power it up to level 50. By lowering the limit to 5 per day they severely lowered the value of remote raids. Increase the price ? and you have a recipe for no point in remote raiding whatsoever. I would believe that these changes were dictated by the pokemon company. The real problem is they took away remote raiding but did not give us a proper in person raiding replacement. I want to raid in person. Good luck finding in person raids. They needed to increase the in person raid spawn rate at the very minimum.

  • @danthewildbirdman
    @danthewildbirdman 8 месяцев назад +5

    Its always a pain to do in person raids bc we can't just all be at some random park at some random time when we have jobs, school and a life. Yeah, lets all drive across town in the middle of the day to do a 2 minute raid and drive back, it's a waste of time.

  • @msprecher6507

I understand the game is about going outside but times have changed ever since the pandemic. Remote raiding has introduced a new audience of players who are unable to go outside. You can't just open pandora's box and then try to put it back and expect everybody to be okay with it. Of course people are going to be upset with these changes. They took away a great feature that made the game more accessible to the disabled and rural players! And still people who have a reason to stay home and raid would be able to without getting broke.

    Thanks for speaking about this.
    I am a chronically ill player, and I live in a extremely rural little community in Sweden.
    There is one gym and 5 pokestops here (and I created 3 of those pokestops)
    My pokemon usually stays in the gym for days, sometimes up to a week before getting knocked out.
    There are never any other players around for raids at that single gym, so I usually just raid only the ones I can solo, so 1 and 3 star ones.
    It takes a literal half hour by car to get closer to any sort of a more regular civilization, no matter wich direction I choose to travel. But that is not enough, if I want to get to a place where I can actually raid 5 stars with enough other players, I need to travel another half an hour at minimum so at least 1 whole hour one way and then another hour back home again.
    And with my health that is simply not possible, I do not have the physical strength to do that, and I also cannot afford it when it comes to the monetary cost of it.
    Being chronically ill in Sweden also means being kinda poor.
    I cannot afford anymore than the bare necessities needed to keep living really...
    So for me remote raiding was the only way of getting those 5 star raids done.
    And now since my pokemon is more or less a permanent defender with just a few sets of breaks of the one and only local gym I simply don't make that many coins.
    And I must prioritize upgrading storage for pokemon and sometimes items before buying any remote raid passes. So I buy remote passes only to get a singular pokemon of any raid boss above 3 stars that I do not have yet.
    So for me personally I agree that the remote nerf was the worst thing Niantic has done in 2023...

    I’m sure all those grandmas in Singapore aren’t bothered by the remote raid nerfs…great example of how in sync niantic is with their player base. But seriously the price increase to the remote raid passes was an insult. I can deal with a daily limit, should be 10, but the cost of the remote passes is really prohibitive. I’ve cut down my monthly spend on this game considerably after the change and try to be as close to free to play as possible (I still spend a little but not much). Like you I still enjoy the game, raiding has never been big draw for me but now it’s even less. End result was for Niantic to destroy the game for the majority of players. In reality the majority of players would prefer to have the choice to play with far away friends rather than being forced to play and meet up in person...Niantic are in essence stupid when it comes to player and business decisions alike...JUST LISTEN TO YOUR PLAYER BASE FFS.....Successful companies listen to their customers,rather than stick ✌️ up at us all.....

Honestly the only thing POGO still has going for it is the 1/20 shiny legendary rate. Most other mons can be shiny hunted easily in the mainline games.

    Raiding non-remotely is way less fun than it used to be too. T5 bosses are stale, don’t even have their special moves and require only 2-3 trainers to defeat it.
    Finding any specific boss is made only slightly easier by Campfire, and you still have to drive across the city to find one. Too many bosses that nobody cares about, with no increased spawning of a featured pokemon - obvs with the exception of Raid hours and Raid days…

      Not sure about that. With remote raids, more rural areas and players can join in on difficult raids. Or high level players like myself can help these more rural areas and players. That's how I feel about it.
      I've seen Niantic claim they're such an inclusive company, yet many of the changes they made this year are pushing rural communities and players away and out of the game, so that only urban players are the ones left in the game.

    This change will only affect the very small 0.000000001 percent of players who do daily raids. The vast majority of players, don’t raid at all. So it’s hurting a very small honestly insignificant amount of players. The game has been downloaded over 1 billion times, yet only has a daily players base of 5 million. It was 116 daily in 2019, and 232 million in 2016. Most people hop on once a week, spin a poke stop or 2, send some gifts, and catch a few Pokémon. Niantic should be more worried about bringing back the billion players who dont play anymore. But instead, they are trying to get more money out of the few hardcores.

    Niantic needs to stop talking out of both sides of their mouth when it comes to remote raids as well. Case in point: the Regional 5* Raids that we are getting next week at time of this comment. We want you to raid locally... but for those of you in the Americas and Greenland (I assume this is the core audience here) in order to get the best non-shadow electric type and #2 overall or one of the best non-shadow bug types and #5 overall you MUST raid remotely. Sorry Americas/Greenland, you get the least buzzworthy (pun intended) of the three Ultra Beasts, which is not top 10 overall in Bug or Fighting. So they want us to raid locally, but make the 5* bosses regionalized... and give me the one that is outranked by one of the other regional bosses in one typing and 3 budget counters(!) in the other typing! You cannot be serious, Niantic!

    I think they should have left the prices the same or maybe only a 50% increase. The daily limit doesn't matter to a lot of folks, especially the Free to play players. we can only get so many coins by gym-ing all week, but it was enough to get a 3 pack of remote raid passes once a week for raid hour. It can take multiple raids to get a good IV or the shiny. If you wanna go hard after one specific one then you can at least still do that in person. The rural and disabled players are disadvantaged and that is unfortunate. Especially since there were rumors this was coming, and those of us that could have gotten up and walked 10-15 minutes to get to the local park and done in person raids, didn't. We took advantage of the remote raid to not disrupt our comfort.

    Honestly, I’m one of the few who never liked remote raids in the first place. I use POGO as a fitness game and remote raids killed my motivation for exploring and playing while traveling. I don’t like the fact everyone has everything. I thought it was cool and unique that ppl in certain places had certain pokemon. It made it feel tangible in a way like i accomplished something or like the pokemon world was real. When I caught a wild dragonite after I flew across the country I told ppl about it. Now just raid or wait for an event you’ll get everything. I still motivate myself to play for my own collection reason and I’m OD about it (shiny dark types 😵‍💫) lol but my peers play just bcus niantic says to play. I know ppl who don’t even know Pokemon but spend hundreds on raiding a month just to say I’m better than you. Some ppl r not mature enough to handle this game it’s essentially gambling. I’m glad they ended remote raiding it lasted too long tho the game is destroyed now. It’s just gambling. I always envisioned this game being a cool AR or 3D interactive type of game ya know. Like you could meet up at a mall and have a battle on a big display screen with holographic images 😂 I’m asking for a lot but. I thought this game would be something besides gambling and pay to win and pay for shinys … it’s not fun. My GBC emulator is still more fun than this I’m playing crystal legacy way more fun lol

    Remote Raids were killing the game. It finally seems like the game is getting back to normal. I never stopped doing in person raids even during the peak of remote raids. I'm finally starting to see people at raids again.
    The problem is the "Remote Raid Community" People who would normally go out and do a raid were sitting at home doing tons of raids from people all over the world and thus less people were going to raids in person leading to it being harder for normal players to get a group to beat strong raids.
    I keep hearing people say but what about people with disabilities who cant go outside.
    I'm not sure why they decided to play a game where they have to go outside...
    they could solve the problem for disabled people by just letting you use a regular pass on any gym you can see from where you are. but if they did that it still wouldn't be enough because its not about that, its about people not wanting to go outside to play, not that they cant.

    • @CringeFest2000
      @CringeFest2000 8 месяцев назад +2

      If you're seeing people come out more again, you're very much in the minority. Most people who used to do remote raids didn't switch to in-person raids, they just stopped raiding altogether.
      A lot of the "normal" players you're talking about also have had to stop doing in-person raids because no one is showing up in person, and now they also can't get anyone to remote in. That's the situation for me; I walk to play all the time, but I can't do raids unless I can solo them because ain't no one showing up one way or another. For a lot of people, killing remote raids just also killed off in-person raiding.

The closest thing to statistical data is a look at something like pokegenie, and such a look would show that there are many more open lobbies on a general level now than, say, a year ago, which suggests that people trying to host raids are finding less people to host them for (which was what I said). That's not a precise method for several reasons, but neither is "you're wrong", and again, we don't have precise methods at our disposal.
