A vocal melodrama around the Pierrot poems of Albert Giraud, Arnold Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire Op. 21, is a startling work of raw expressionism. Notorious as the most shocking atonal musical work of its time, it is scored for a small ensemble and a soprano employing Sprechgesang. Acclaimed for her acting abilities, the celebrated German singer Anja Silja takes the role of Schoenberg’s Pierrot: not simply the traditional figure of pathos but a dislocated, splintered personality who rasps out tortured and often violent fantasies.

For those wondering, the piece played in the intro is the first of Igor Stravinsky's Three pieces for clarinet solo.

@@rafaelgonzalez6172 It was a production that joined three small scale early 20th century works focused on the circus one way or another. Apart from Pierrot Lunaire they also performed Manuel de Falla's El Retablo de Maese Pedro and Igor Stravinsky's Renard, all conducted by Boulez. The solo clarinet pieces are used as intermezzi to give enough time for the stage to change and to link the three works together without there being stops between them, i guess. The other ones are also on RUclips, give them a watch!

I heard this (in full length) for the first time about 60 years ago. I didn't like it. Thinking I might have changed lately, I am trying this again (so far about15 minutes) and I still do not like it. I am stopping, now. Should I feel sad because I do not understand/enjoy all these modern (probably more fashionable) things? No, not at all. I am happy to know that I still cherish and enjoy old stuffs - up to Mahler.

I have to chuckle, totally fair. While I discovered Schoenberg only about 25 years ago in high school, I JUST discovered this piece. My appreciation starts with a personal interest, curiosity, love of all references to the moon. I'm also hugely intrigued by any and all variations, representations of mimes/pierrots/clowns/harlequins. This is a gateway operetta for those still inching towards Wagner. And maybe I'm reaching, while I fell in love with Rite of Spring (1913) at first listen, Wozzeck (c.1914-1922, 1925) was a little bit of a head shake at first. Form with Freedom.

Pierrot Lunaire was composed in 1912, calling it modern or contemporary seems outdated? Most of the music that we listen nowadays is composed later than this, unless you only listen barroque/clasical/romantic music

music is one of two kinds. there's the kind that makes you sweat and stop your feat because you can't contain the joy of listening to it. and there's the other kind. don't feel sad, and concentrate on whatever makes you want to scream "THIS IS GREAT!" to your neighbour, whatever that is.
