I love seeing young black dudes like you listening to and liking the music I grew up with a love. This was an awesome band of black guys that played some seriously kick-ass Rock.
Dude, if you want to hear more black Rock awesomeness you need to listen to Jimi Hemndrix -- Band of Gypsys part 1 with Billy Cox on bass and Buddy Miles on drums -- Jimi's all black band. Machine Gun is epic (Jimi's solo in that is so good in makes me cry), Changes, Message of Love, all amazing tracks.

This song came out in 1988. One of my favs! Everybody I know loves this song and this group! I believe the yellow outfit he is wearing is a wet suit but not sure on that. I know there were short wet suits like this back in the day. 80's music was amazing music and yes we were all floored when we found out it wasn't a white group but we loved them anyway. The message in this song is so true and its message is strongly needed today!!

The funny thing is that the first time that song played on Raw, a lot of us lost our shit because we remembered it as CM Punk's music in Ring of Honor. He turned face, got fan support, won the title, then the next night came out to that song and turned heel, saying he did it all just to get the title. Thus began the Summer of Punk, as he was already signed to WWE (he signed his WWE contract on the ROH title) and fans wondered if anyone would defeat him before he left, since no one knew how much time was left on his contract.

I loved in Living Color because they broke the norm. Black men were the roots of rock, starting with blues, then Hendrix . In the 90's when this came out, the black people were just getting into the roots of hip-hop, but COP gave no fucks, the went to hard rock, and we loved them for it. Deep dive into those lyrics though brother, thet are as deep and meaningful now as they were then. Fuck the media

Hi Ahmad, great reaction! I love that song : ) Having lived through both the 70s and the 80s, and of course up till now, I can attest to the fact that the 80s was def a colorful decade!
I feel it was in response to the 60s and 70s “classic rock” era. (Of course it was not yet known as “classic” rock at the time.) The standard rock uniform was jeans and tee shirts, sometimes embellished with patches, headbands, a sequined vest, etc. Scroll through the music of the 60s and 70s and you’ll see why we were referred to as “Psychadelic, lol.
The 80s came in with a synthesized drum beat, electrified hair and a new wave of colors with neon spandex at the top of the food chain.
I’m so happy and proud that I got to experience those eras first hand. It was all so much fun and so alive with creativity and great music.im so excited to watch you and other young people
Rediscovering our music from the past. It’s like seeing and hearing it all over again for the first time!!

Corey is wearing a Body Glove short "wetsuit". Back in the day it was quite popular with some folks to wear body glove items or other tight "biker shorts" type of clothing. It sort of went in line with those that dressed in surfer mode or just general "beach vibe" apparel. The bright neon colors fit in perfectly with 80's fashion, which is popular once again. Everything always comes back into style eventually. :-)

I remember watching MTV in 1986 (back when they played actual music videos) & seeing Aerosmith team up with Run DMC for their rap cover of "Walk This Way'. It was the first time that we saw rock & rap come together to form this fusion of music genres. Many folks didn't know what to think, some loved it (including me) while others absolutely hated it. But no one could deny that it had changed the scene & opened doors for new forms of music to be created. Then a short while after that in 1988, we were introduced to Living Colour - the first Black American hard rock-metal band to make it into mainstream media... And they're still rocking out to this day. :-)
    * fun fact - lead singer Corey Glover (no relation to actor Danny Glover) played a US Army soldier (Francis) in Oliver Stone's Vietnam war movie, "Platoon"

If you want to listen to a great band of black Rastas, check out Bad Brains. Started in late 70's in DC. Huge influence on so many bands like Metallica, Nirvana, Rage Against the Machine, etc. Bad Brains basically created the genre of "Hardcore, Hardcore/Punk". Also they played reggae/dub mixed in.
Living Colour was a great band, I listened to them a lot in the late 80s in elementary school.
Glad you are digging Pantera, my first concert ever was in 1994 when i was 15, Pantera /Sepultura/ Biohazard.
If you skateboarded back in the early 90s a lot of skate vids had a huge selection of music which opened me up to a lot of stuff from ska, punk, to rap. I"m not a huge rap fan these days but I'm big on 80s/90s East Coast rap artists like Gang Starr, Jazzmatazz (Guru from Gang Starr) Mobb Deep, Onyx, Gravediggaz, Wu-Tang. Check out Gang Starr - "Work" if you haven't already heard them.

Living Colour remain one of my favourite live bands. I've been to see them 3 times over the years with a very white, but *very* up for a singalong crowd in Glasgow, Scotland. LOL They seem to appreciate the loud singalong crowd thing, redardless of melanin levels!
They're all excellent musicians- Vernon Reid always appears in Top100 Guitarists Ever™ lists, Doug Wimbish is just as virtuosic on bass, Will Calhoun is rock solid on drums but also leads jazz bands & writes some great songs, & Corey Glover always sings his ass off. I love it when he has a moment at a gig & goes for an acapella Amazing Grace or whatever.... tremendous. :)
Aside from reaction vids, anyone who appreciates this song should at least listen thru the first 2 albums, Vivid ('88) & Time's Up('90), although I enjoy their later stuff too.

Spandex tight pants unfortunately took over the rock world in the mid to late 80's, Thankfully in the 90's it went back to boots, jeans and tee shirts. While you don't see many rock/metal bands made up of just African American members (i almost forgot about Bad Brains - Rise) there are a lot with African American Members. I recently ran across Skindred and their lead singer is African American. They are a Welsh heavy metal band formed in Newport, Wales, in 1998. Their musical style mixes heavy metal, alternative rock, and ragga which is an interesting mix. Check out Skindred - Big Tings (Stripped Back) or Skindred - Kill The Power (Explicit Lyrics)
