My office is based in Missoula. Thank you Hank for giving this issue the time it so desperately needs during your interview!
I truly honestly wish there were more public voices like Ryan Busse at the national level. I live in a deep red southern state and long for a sane voice to unite instead of continue to divide.

I'm only 15min in but I find it really interesting. I'm german and never really hear about american state politics only about presidential elections which get so annoying
Same. I spend way to much time online and hear a lot about US politics, but it's usually national. And if not, it's probably about some policies in Texas, Florida or other red states taking away reproductive rights, banning books in schools or sth similar that seem outlandish from my (obviously biased) German view. So it was very interesting to hear a more in depth conversation about politics in Montana, a state I hardly knew anything about. Helped to remind me that I definitely don't know enough about the 'states' part in the 'United States of America' and I better get rid of some of the prejudices I still have.

As a Montanan, thank you for bringing more attention to Ryan's candidacy and platform. I truly believe our state is a wonderful place and like my fellow Montanans want to do everything we can to keep it "the last best place."
I’m from the suburbs right outside of Chicago and didn’t think I’d be so invested on the drama of Montana politics for almost 50 minutes. Good luck on the elections Montanans.
I'm in Australia and I listened to this while doing macrame. It's always fascinating to hear about the state and local level because so much is zoomed out. Hearing the same topics echoed around the world on those levels reminds me how many things we all have in common.
I’m from Michigan, and I really appreciated this conversation. His perspective is so refreshing because he is genuinely concerned about bettering Montana for all people.
Not an american, it's just nice to see a conversation about policy not mired by extreme views or personal attacks. Also, well up for more long-form content from you and John 👀👀
I lived in Bozeman for gradschool when Gianforte got elected as Montana's congressman. I still can't believe he ever got elected. I don't think he has been good for Montana and I am glad that Montana Democrats are putting up a strong opposition to him.
If US national politics worry you as a citizen, your local elections may still be the single most important factor for positive change and protecting your rights! One of the US national Republican party's most common strategies when they fail at national goals through elections and congress is to shift the arena to the courts or state/local governments where they hope people aren't looking. Even if you don't think of yourself as a Democrat or any other specific identity, a surprising amount of taxes, regulation, and services are at least partially determined at the state and local level.
My parents lived in Montana for the first few years of their marriage. They said it's a great place to live and a crappy place to make a living. I really loved this video and really appreciate you making it.
Fellow Montanan here (hello from Butte America!) And I wanted to say thank you very much for making this video. As I get older (I'm currently in my 30's) I feel more and more that I do not agree with voting straight down a ticket with my party affiliation. Which requires staying plugged into politics way more than I want to be. And I find that difficult sometimes. This video helps. I look forward to learning more about Ryan in the coming weeks leading up to the election
As a Montanan, I thank you Hank for putting this guy out there on your channel, because more of us need to hear him talk about this stuff. The contrast with the out of touch poser we have in there right now couldn't be more stark. Busse is the real deal.
As someone in what is definitely a red state, the climate change denial is definitely one of the most bafflingly obvious cases of paid speech I can think of (from the politicians, not the voters.) My knee-jerk is to say something like "Senator, have you looked in on your beach house lately?" and I know damn well the answer's almost definitely that they know and simply have no need to care about what their eyes show them clear as day.
This was frickin awesome. This candidate shares a lot of my views, and in very red areas would be considered a "looney lefty". He just wants the freedom to be left alone, and to make sure that government works as intended, to be stewards of the land, and to make sure your people are taken care of. I really like this format and hope you do more in the future.
In particular, I like what he said about working people being at the center of the energy reformation. My biggest gripe with renewables is there's no effort being made to transition coal miners, or coal fired plant workers, into that industry. There's some effort being made with nuclear, because some of the skills do transfer over, but still not as much as there should be.
As a Dutchy living in Sweden. "How did I get through all that?" It was a very pleasant conversation and I learned a thing or two about another place. Catch y'all later!
I have wanted to move to Montana for years. I am one of those politics nerds that decided not to relocate because of the changes in the laws there. I have a senior mother that would have come with me and those changes gave me pause when considering her needs. It's so beautiful and a great place to spend the second half of my life. Good luck to you guys. ❤

I was at the state legislature last session. I watched in horror as they passed bill after bill in spite of really good arguments for not doing so. As a super majority of one political party there is no opposition they simply do what they want and the Governor signed all of the bills into law. Thanks for doing this Hank. As a native retired woman in Montana it is sad to see our state which for my whole life had been pretty politically balance between to parties. To be ruled by one ideology.
I'm a white guy in South Africa. I didn't grow up in Apartheid, but i see the wounds it left every time i step outside. Knowing what led to things being the way they are helps do my part in making things better
I love this political video. Haven't seen a lot of politics from the Greens. This is exciting! Especially hearing about a state that one doesn't hear a lot about.
Here in Montana we don't have sales tax, so when we fund things the burden tends to go towards homeowners and property prices. This last round of property tax raises damaged first time homebuyers and first time famailies as it made starter home significantly more expensive. On top of that and the increase number of people moving into areas like Great Falls and Missoula are causing increase in rentals over homeownership. Which then increase property value which in turn increases tax burden, a 100k house turned 250k has the tax increase about as much.
I really appreciate how you keep a relatively neutral stance through this interview and give his competitor the benefit of the doubt at times where you say things like “I’m sure there’s a reason for X…” Generally this was a really fun interview to watch and you did a great job as an interviewer. I’d love to see more of you talking to people like this!
"How the heck did you get all the way through that?!" I got through it because I've gotten through them all since 2009 and 49:18 about Montana politics is not gonna break my streak. Never underestimate the force of habit! Also it was still pretty interesting 🙂
Not American here, but this felt kind of exciting! Huge changes happened politically in the U.K. this year, with many place who have never had a labour MP voting one in. (Labour is sort of our equivalent of democrats). Any politician who genuinely wants to help, listen, and has plans to do things that will benefit people who need them most is exciting in my books. Too many are power hungry, greedy for more wealth than they need and/or keen on the attention. My opinion is: you don’t have to find a perfect candidate. You just need to pick the least worst option when you vote. You don’t have to go to a bar with them, or agree with their minor preferences, you need to find someone who is most likely to listen and represent you and your neighbours.
"Our differences are wide." Exactly! This is why I didn't understand undecided voters. I love that his kids were part of that constitutional lawsuit and we have framers available to speak to the intent. 💜 I love our paid purple Montana. Giant fart is scared to debate Busse.
Why did Republicans raise property taxes? The answer is easy…greed. They KNOW that people on fixed income or have low income can’t afford a raise in property taxes. And who is going to buy that property once it’s seized? It’s not going to be a local looking for more space or a better yard or whatever. It’s going to be a corporation. One that will rent the property and make a killing in profits. One that will collude with other corporations to keep property values high and make it near impossible for anyone or anything but a large corporation can buy any new property that comes on the market. I don’t doubt for a second that they knew EXACTLY what they were doing. And to add extra shine to my tin foil hat, I believe all that infighting was staged. They’ll keep the wheels spinning until people lose their homes so that the corporations those big money Republicans are buddy buddy with can buy them up and line everyone’s pockets in a year or two.
In all fairness property taxes are probably the most “fair” tax as you aren’t discouraging people from producing more as with income and sales tax also you cant take the land somewhere else it can’t be taxed like with the other two and in theory raising property taxes hurts big corporations buying lots of property the most
@@AceTester But if you're low-income or fixed-income, and you own property anyway because you inherited it or you bought it years ago, that property is your stability. Raising taxes beyond what you can afford takes your stability away. Meanwhile, corporations who own many properties are able to do so because of their excess of profit, and while their property taxes will be a higher total number, it'll also be a much lower percentage of their profits/disposable income.
Not an American, but this was interesting as hell, Hank. It's always fascinating to hear from such folk, whos principles seem more based on common sense than (what seems like to an outsider like me) arbitrary party lines.

A lot of people who have to watch what they say (mostly politicians and celebrities) tend to get that "polished" sound to their voice and their opinions, but this sounds like a guy who's looking at it like just another job that someone's gotta do, and I really, really appreciate that.
I’m one of the people who got CI-128 on the ballot this year to secure our reproductive rights. I manage the project to campaign for it and the progressive candidates who will protect it in Montana. My office is based in Missoula. Thank you Hank for giving this issue the time it so desperately needs during your interview!
Best of luck!

I truly honestly wish there were more public voices like Ryan Busse at the national level. I live in a deep red southern state and long for a sane voice to unite instead of continue to divide.
Now I want an upload of the whole Pete Buttigieg conversation
@@Neonb88 There is one. At least I saw an hour or so of it.

@@persimnon Hm. In my memory it was longer. It's only 26 minutes long. Maybe because I didn't know who he was before the interview and don't live in America.

I'm in Canada. I made it all the way through. Crossing my fingers for human rights, both for your state and country.
@@AV-we6woyes it is rare to get such a candid view! When I talked to my German relatives about their political system I was super confused too 😂 I’m hoping y’all can stay positive and keep the far right away!

Agreed! Lots of us Canadians are invested in American politics since some of the trends seep over the border 😅
Hank.... I just can't with you bro. You are better(and your brother is not exactly a slouch, my guy) at being a human being than any other person on the face of the planet. I'm 54, and I find myself everyday trying to grow up to be like you...

Thank you. For everything.
My left ear really liked the part around 24:00 and about a minute after where it got all the sound, my right ear really liked it when the stereo sound came back :P

Thank you for positive political content. This shit stresses me out so hard sometimes
I live in the deep south. Its been so frustrating how for years the vast majority of people simply ignore politics, don’t interact with it at all and then complain about shit. Thank you for doing this interview and exposing people who might not have gotten a chance to see a politician.
This guy rules. I hope he can overcome partisanship and win

It's local politics, which are always more civil, and they agree with each other.
I live in montana currently. Thank you for posting this.
I'm listening from Europe and there's nothing I can say. Good luck, Montana.
Hank, I saw a tweet of yours quoted in a RUclips short by the USDOT a couple days ago. Seems like Pete is keeping tabs on you after the interview!
As a Montanan, I thank you Hank for putting this guy out there on your channel, because more of us need to hear him talk about this stuff. The contrast with the out of touch poser we have in there right now couldn't be more stark. Busse is the real deal.
I'm not from Montana, but this is an excellent interview for even non-Montanas.
I'm gonna say it. I don't care how long the vlogbrothers video is i'm gonna watch it. This is a power you wield.
I desperately wish I lived in Montana so I could vote for this guy
+1
Folks like Busse, Walz, Shapiro, and Whitmer are why I'm so confused when the pundits say Democrats don't have a deep bench.
The democrat-knife fight statement is so true it hurts
Local government is always key!
Hank, I got all the way through that as a non-American because it was refreshing to hear there are parts of your country that are not that polarized
Thank you for doing and posting this interview. We don't get to hear enough of Busse. -- A Bozeman Local
This is the kind of perspective America needs more of. Thank you both for sharing this important moment for Montana!!

Gubernatorial
I wish there was a candid RUclips interview like this for every State race!!
I need to hear more about his position on socks, sock trading, and deregulation of the sock market.
Another fellow Missoulian here! great conversation here, and I'm stoked to learn more about Ryan and his ideas!
Read this comment and then saw the username... hi Andy!
It's weird to say this-because it was the president, and it was Obama-but look how far you've come, Hank! I'm looking forward to this.
"My world-view is to allow people to have their world views" - put that on a t-shirt, a sign, a button, a billboard. What a great and earnest idea.

It was a very pleasant conversation and I learned a thing or two about another place.

As an Ohioan, my governor might not be weirder but my senator definitely is...
This man should be a governor of something ❤❤
I see the collin and samir reference.
This is very interesting to sit through and listen to a guy who has no impact on me talk about current issues in your area. Thanks for making this!

Thanks for that Hank! Its nice to see political candidates that behave as if they are humans. Also highlights others that are so darn weird.

What’s wrong with taxes!!! I live in New Zealand and my taxes pay for healthcare, education, fun services. For me and for others.
I've been in DC for a couple years but I'm hoping to move back to Bozeman next year and I CANNOT WAIT to have Ryan Busse as my governor.
I'm so excited about this! Thank you from a blue dot in Billings 💙
Great, great interview. 💙
"Gubernatorial candidate body-slams cancer survivor" might be tough to spin positively.
Based on the cancer diagnosis reports, "Gubernatorial candidate body-slams brother of author John Green" is a more likely headline 😂

More of this type of content, please! I love your style of interviewing; the honesty is refreshing!

Knife fight= 14 Point policy plan? I love it!
Hank: My Governor is weirder than yours!
Me: Oklahoma
"How the heck did you get all the way through that?!"
I got through it because I've gotten through them all since 2009 and 49:18 about Montana politics is not gonna break my streak.
I love our paid purple Montana.
