That dismount is the coolest thing I've ever seen. I wish the routines now were more like this. Uneven bars now is basically just like the men's high bar.
Absolutely a stunning routine😍😍😍 and I love this dismount, Maria Filatova did it in 1976, Montreal Olympics and I am happy that other gymnasts chose to perform it because is amazing😍😍😍
Great video! I think gymnastics in the 80s was better than it is now. I love that stomach flip (or I heard it called the "stomach whip") which, unfortunately, they no longer allow, I'm assuming because of the impact on the pelvic area. However, that, and other techniques no longer allowed, made the routines more exciting to watch! Luckily, we have RUclips to see all the routines from the "good old days"! Thanks for posting this.
I don't think that's why... I think it's not so much disallowed as pretty much physically impossible because the bars are so far apart nowadays that move can't really be completed
It didn't hurt if it was done correctly, but it probably caused alot of problems when they were learning the techniques, but it just isn't talked about because it was back then and I think they were drilled not to talk about it back then. But they don't do it because the bars are so far apart, they can't do stomach hits like that anymore.
Much ado that was made about “the vault without fault”, Mary Lou Retton was actually great on uneven bars. I love the unique “beat” to salto on high bar.
No, the reason the stomach move isn't done anymore is because it is no longer possible. The bars are much farther apart now. Physically the athletes can no longer reach one bar with their pelvis while hanging onto the other bar... the bars are so far apart now their feet fly by the other bar as they swing around.
It's been a gradual thing, over the quads. After every Olympics, the gymnastics Code of Points (the international rule book basically) changes a little bit and the distance between the bars has been one of those things, sadly :(
I found this curious quote online about Mary Lou's move: "This move and many others like it are no longer in the Code of Points due to belly beating no longer in use on bars". Is that bar-bounce off off her abdomen currently "illegal", considered "unsafe", or otherwise disfavored in judging? Anyone know the full story?
I don't think it's disallowed so much as no longer physically possible as the bars are farther apart now and it's really not possible to complete that move.
@spartyutube no but it is the same mount emilia eberle used im not sure if it was named after eberle or not MLR must like eberle she used the same floor music as eberle did
@caillinnumberonefan this was the 80s man. things just got harder like the bars being farther apart as the years went by. it has been almost thirty years when you think about it.
To think the Retton Flip came about by accident. She was going for another move and this came out. So they analyzed it to see how it could be performed and this was the result.
The name changes constantly. If you look at some videos from earlier of this decade, you'll see, it already was Visa American Cup. Yeah, now it's Visa Nationals but, American Cup already was Visa. You got it.
They should add "Retton Flip" to the tags for this. It's a perfect example! When I used google, the only video I could find was a 6-second one, and the girl overshoots and comes off.
She is just someone working the event (sometimes they have local gymnasts work the meets). Lots of meets will ask for volunteers to walk gymnasts from event to event, etc.
is it me, or when she's coming up to the high bar, does it look like she was looking to her side? i swear it looks like she was looking away then looked back!
I love how in the older bar dismounts, the gymnasts had time to seemingly float, and then do another turn. It looks amazing! :D
GOOSEBUMPS every time I see this. The Retton Flip, the dismount. . .perfect landing, absolutel amazing!
Such a beautiful performance! True talent, Miss Mary Lou! Bravo! ❤️✌️🤗
her dismount is truely amazing!
I can still remember watching that... she will always be one of the greats to me
the dismount was unbelievable
That dismount is the coolest thing I've ever seen. I wish the routines now were more like this. Uneven bars now is basically just like the men's high bar.
Couldn’t they do a dismount like this still? Or would it not be high scoring?
@@Ttjam1 It might not be possible given that the bars are situated farther apart today than they were then.
Her legs a glued together! Love it!! She did such an amazing routine!!
That dismount was the most beautiful thing i've ever seen.
I get to meet her soon and I'm so exited!
I remember watching this routine on TV when I was a kid, she did the "Retton Flip" onto the high bar. I loved her :-)
i found myself clicking "replay"over and over and over and over
Absolutely a stunning routine😍😍😍 and I love this dismount, Maria Filatova did it in 1976, Montreal Olympics and I am happy that other gymnasts chose to perform it because is amazing😍😍😍

That Retton Flip rocks. Lovely quality video :)
I love watching gymnasts perform on uneven bars, but I think it was much more beautiful when the bars were that close.
Beautiful, but much more dangerous.
Much ado that was made about “the vault without fault”, Mary Lou Retton was actually great on uneven bars. I love the unique “beat” to salto on high bar.
Exept from the first release it was really good. Her move was amazing!
She's amazing
"Up in the air like Mary Lou Retton, pow!"
I gave a speech about Mary Lou retton and I think I watched this video about 1,000 times 😂
OMG, speechless, my jaw dropped! that stomach routine, OH MY. . .WOW!
That was literally a 23 second routine. WOW. Very good.
That dismount was very cool! So high and dynamic
It used to be called the McDonald's Cup...in NYC..I was there...amazing to watch!
She's who got me to take notice and get into Gymnastics.
I think both versions of the bars are good in their own way. When the bars are further apart, it allows for more elements to be performed.
Amazing!
So amazing!
wow, that routine was amazing!
Wow! That was great. Her dismount looks really hard.
How was this not a 10? I've seen it so many times and haven't seen any mistakes.

Now THAT is a stuck dismount!! Haha:)
Que saudade das saídas à frente da barra menor! Muito lindo!
Holy jebuz, she is amazing...
I remember watching her as a girl. She was an American Idol, and still is to many.
her dismounts is rtuely amazing
It's been a gradual thing, over the quads. After every Olympics, the gymnastics Code of Points (the international rule book basically) changes a little bit and the distance between the bars has been one of those things, sadly :(
THAT. WAS. AMAZING. NO WONDER IT'S NAMED AFTER HER. ITS AMAZING.

She also dismounted from the higher bar over the low bar, which is now illegal due to the risk of injury from hitting the low bar during the dismount.
She was awesome! :o
this is AMAZING!
@bbhouk1 she was born in us and is italian-american
Ufffffffff que maravillosa rutina...........espectacular
Luv this girl!
i love that dismount!
whoa... that was AWESOME!!!
@spartyutube no but it is the same mount emilia eberle used im not sure if it was named after eberle or not
MLR must like eberle she used the same floor music as eberle did
These gymnasts have balls. Respect.
She sure is one of my favorite Olympic gymnast!
@caillinnumberonefan this was the 80s man. things just got harder like the bars being farther apart as the years went by. it has been almost thirty years when you think about it.
One of the greatest Gymnastics of all time 🔥♥️
To think the Retton Flip came about by accident. She was going for another move and this came out. So they analyzed it to see how it could be performed and this was the result.
I really like her form on bars.
Whoa! That is so cool!
do they deduct 4 leg separation? she had such a great routine
what a dismount!! wow
The name changes constantly. If you look at some videos from earlier of this decade, you'll see, it already was Visa American Cup. Yeah, now it's Visa Nationals but, American Cup already was Visa. You got it.
Yeah goo Mary lou
my jaw dropped after a saw that dismount thumbs up
She's a ninja!
HOLY MARY LOU RETTON!
That should have been a 10. This routine is almost as great as Korbut's in Munich.
agree/ also as good as nadia’s
They should add "Retton Flip" to the tags for this. It's a perfect example! When I used google, the only video I could find was a 6-second one, and the girl overshoots and comes off.
no - when I first started uneven bars, I got bruises on both sides of my hips from that move, but it didn't really hurt.
Wish I could do that when I was 16... or now, even!
Why are the bars no longer that close together?
@lovegymnastics2002 It was the 80s... The bars were originally like this until the 90s
That Tkachev was gnarly
omg this video is so clear...
when did they change the distance between the bars?
I WAS IN AWE OVER THAT DISMOUNT -3
What was the -.05 deduction for?
Did you see the tkatchev at the beginning?
Unbelievable!!
Whoa, this chick's good!
Lmfaaoo the judge at 0:26 - she's even ecstatic about Retton's performance! :)
this image really was high-resoluted, for being from 1984.
She is just someone working the event (sometimes they have local gymnasts work the meets). Lots of meets will ask for volunteers to walk gymnasts from event to event, etc.
@KillaKitty09
Yeah, that dismount was straight out of the Matrix.
was her mount a mcnamara??!!!
this is an amazing routine! too bad today's gymnastics isn't like that..at all!
Did she bend her legs in that first release? Her move was amazing!
Holy crap!
@SalieriFoe
mary lou retton? of germany? are you kidding? she competed for the US
why are the bars so close?
Now THAT is a stuck dismount!! Haha
And why the .05 deduction???
I wonder how much of that routine is no longer allowed due to risk of serious injury
oh my goodness...
@afgymnast96 yea. but this is 1984 so.....your point?
WHOOP WHOOP!
Holy crap
totally!
is it me, or when she's coming up to the high bar, does it look like she was looking to her side? i swear it looks like she was looking away then looked back!
I keep watching :14 trying to figure out what just happened...I still can't
she is soooooo fuking A-M-A-Z-I-N-G !!!!!
Like Dennis Miller said, "If I hit anything that hard with my crotch, I'm spot-welding to it!"
I love unevens, except now, the routines are more like men's high bar than unevens.
i think its illegal now
