  • In 1937, Amelia Earhart was about to embark on a record-setting flight around the world. In her final moments, she took her last photograph and set off from a Burbank, California airstrip, captured in recently recovered home movie footage.

Umm Howard Hughes took the easy path! What a cop out, Amelia’s route was orders of magnitude more difficult.

yeah , it looked like Howard Hughes just made a small circle . I wouldnt consider it a trip around the world unless it crosses the Pacific .

This was a lady with real class, a heroine. I'd strongly recommend Fred Groener's book 'The Search for Amelia'. Fred spent years researching the mystery, and despite being largely stonewalled by departments of government, his conclusions are very convincing. Some libraries have it.

A WW2 Bomber pilot was operating on the West Coast of Papua New Guinea. In the area, he was based he discovered a wreck of a Lockheed 12A
in dense bush. It had been there for a long time. The pilot removed an engine ID plate and on returning to Australia discovered it was a perfect match to one of Earhart's engines. The pilot is still alive today and has launched 2 expeditions and a third following to find the wreck. It is right on the west coast of PNG. It means if it is Earhart's aircraft. They turned around and flew the trackback to Borneo.

Amelia was having dinner with the head of Guinea Airways before they took off while Fred was drinking with the local pilots …both looking for local information
Lockheed 10, 14, and German built ‘Junkers’ all used the Pratt&Whitney Hornet/Wasp 500-600Hp engines …and all those planes were similar size and shape while being designed differently…they were all freight work horses
Guinea Airways held the freight records using those planes and wrecks were inevitable and not all of the planes were properly accounted for
So while it’s highly likely they had her repair tag from a refurbished part on the after market, on a plane the same size and shape as hers known for operating in that area that subsequently crashed, it’s not likely that she returned to crash in the jungle …so it’s not likely her plane …it’s likely a Guinea Airways plane that had one of her parts and repair tags
It was a cool story though and a great rabbit hole looking up the New Guinea gold rush freight history
