This amp takes single coils so well!
Great tones 👍🏼
That's some seriously fast traffic outside you're garage/workshop.
I love this! Cheers!
Nice one RD...
Cheers Tony! Hope you’re well
Really cool to have those switchable options. I have a hand-wired version, is the mod basically the same? Probably even easier, I'm guessing...
Much easier in a hand wired
Sounds great! What are the values of the capacitor and resistor used in these mods, and what type of toggle switch is used here? Thanks for sharing!
I just used standard Marshall values for those points. Check the schematics of the 1987 circuit.
I would guess at 2.7k with 0.68 uF ?
@@mcentee2 , for the spilt cathode indeed. For the 2nd stage cathode bypass, this one is worth playing around with. You can really dial in your own thing here. Definitely experiment
@@RDamps what did your end up with, I think your other video was a .56uF ?
Hi again, I was curious why you decided to change your JTM to the DS40. I am still on the fence about doing the same because I don't want to lose any tone or feel present with the classic plexi circuit. I've only heard a DS40 played, never tried one. They sound amazing though. I'm wondering if the whole mod could be done on just the normal channel and keep the bright JTM.
Is the tone stack any different than a JTM50? I see you have the split cathode option on this one too. Has this become a popular mod? I've been running mine with the split cathode in place about 90% of the time with a Les Paul, and it helps for the tele to not get too loose in the bass. My Tele really booms on those top strings. It just sculpts the tone so nicely.
The JTM50 is essentially just a JTM45 without the valve rectifier and a bigger output transformer. (But there are some that did have valve rectification) other than that. Value wise they are the same.
@@RDamps I wrote that wrong. I meant, is the tone stack the same as a JTM45. My JTM50 build has a valve and SS rectifier with a switch between them. I actually don't notice a huge difference between the two.
Is the bipass cap on V2 similar to the famous EVH 'fat cap' mod?
Comparing all your clips, the JTM50 "Black Flag" Clone sounded the best, so warm and clear, so identical to those ACDC tones. This JTM45 for example doesn't sound as good. Do you think it depends on the different volume you set for each recording?
Thank you for your kind comment and thank you for watching.
I think the big difference is my JTM50 is hand wired old school turret board and no valve rectification. Helps with its immediacy and punch. Its the perfect blend of the JTM45 and SuperLead.
Pretty hard to argue with that tone. What's the singlecoil-sized humbucker you have in the bridge of your Strat?
That’s a lil’59
Mine has el34's. Is there a reason you went with the 6l6's? And would the extra gain from my El34's be equivalent to what the V2 bipass cap offers?
This was an early reissue when there were only 6L6’s available. To be honest the difference is very very subtle between 5881’s and EL34’s
@@RDamps Thanls, in retrospect I think you're right. How did the DS40 mod go? Are you happy with the conversion?
Right, and 5881's are different from 6L's too from my understanding. My tech told me they have an earlier breakup.
Gilding not Guilding
Yep 🤦🏻♂️
