I love the bootmat idea. I used to use them when my tanks were on furniture and not on racks as they are now. I loved that it extended past the tank (typically) and I could place items on it and my furniture was protected.

Try the good old parchment paper background with a dim nightlight behind it for a nice glow. Our spiney eels burrow in the sand, so we made the sand layer thicker than normal for them. They seem to love it. The only rooted plant is a giant lily that's taking over. The eels uproot the bulb and the bulb just sends out more roots. It's like a really slow dance.
You can use acrylic to put over the top of furniture. That way you can see the wood under it.

I would also suggest inline heaters and co2 diffusers for people going high tech.
