When subtitles/captions are not enough... [CC]

It's very common to see people say "just read the subtitles/captions" when there are calls for sign language interpreters.
But is it really that simple? Is that enough? Spoiler alert: no. But it's not complicated to understand why it's not enough either.
There are reasons why 1) subtitles/captions are not enough in certain scenarios, and 2) sign language interpreters can relay the message better for many people who communicates in sign language only.
Even for someone like myself who does not depend on sign language, it is heart-breaking yet frustrating for me to see people who do depend on it and it's their native language, they are neglected in more ways than one. It's even worse when they are neglected in scenarios which are literally life and death, like during a globa pandemic.

I'm hoh and an avid language learner myself (I'm also learning BSL). I would rather have critical, life or death type information given to me in english (my native language) than in french (my 2nd language, I'm B2/Upper Intermediate). Sure I can understand a lot of french words, enough to have many different conversations in a confident manner, but I can't understand as much french as with english. This is especially true when it comes to complicated topics like the coronavirus and listening comprehension due to my hearing problems. I also have 2 other disabilities which make proccessing information more difficult (including reading subtitles, I wear glasses to read them sometimes) so the less barriers, the better. It can be a similar situation with many deaf/hoh people where BSL is their first language and English is their second for example. I know a deaf person who struggles to read and write in english as an adult (like how some ESL hearing immigrants do), yet there is a lack of BSL interpreters on COVID briefings.
If you've ever seen the Prime Minister's Questions videos on RUclips they always have BSL versions uploaded straight after the regular ones. They have the money and it's been done before and recently, there's no excuse in my opinion.

They really have no excuse at all. The attitude towards sign language needs to change and be treated like any other language. And your day-to-day life is another perfect example on why it's better to receive certain information in your first and chosen language.

With this pandemic it's impossible to read lips with people having their mask on. I'm trying to find a mask that says "I'm deaf, PLEASE REMOVE YOUR MASK so I can read your lips"
